It was the single best way to close his history, making so this victory trumped every single loss he ever had.

Leon's pretty hard too when you're at the intended level to fight him. Each of his Pokemon in the game threaten the player, some even being capable of sweeping if you're not careful (Dragapult and Haxorus). He's not as hard as Cynthia but he's at least in the top 3 hardest champions gameplay-wise.

Ash vs Leon was an experience, I felt things I nvr felt before, I cried of joy& scream of joy at the same. Seeing the goats I’ve been watching since I was 4-5 become the strongest was truly amazing moment in my life.
As much as Journeys was mid in the end, Pikachu vs. Leon's Charizard was one of the BEST moments in the anime! I ACTUALLY teared up when Pikachu saw all his old friends and Ash cheering him on! I got CHILLS when Pikachu gets back up, goes Super Saiyan, and the "Gotta Catch 'Em All" theme started playing! I cheered him on as he landed his Thunderbolt! The animation, the determination, all leading up to Pikachu's final blow to Charizard, leading him to FINALLY WIN! Pikachu, you beautiful rat son of Arceus, you ACTUALLY did it! I love you Pikachu! Give these animators the credit and paychecks that they deserve! I mean, yeah, I wish Ash rotated some of his old Pokémon and that everyone Ash and Pikachu know and met on their journey were in watching in person to see this! Other than that, this battle was GOATED!
The final battle with Leon, and that last episode on it, is the peak of the Pokemon anime, it was the most incredible thing I've ever seen to come from Pokemon.

I heard stories that the reason Tobias existed was to give Ash one last hurrah where he shows how far he’d come by beating Darkrai before the soft reboot to black and white In practice, it ended up just being Ash getting swept by a last minute random character with an action replay that was so blatantly a desperate attempt to make Ash lose when he was finally getting really good THIS is how you do a final battle for a character, just going all out with the music, animation, fight choreography, and most importantly, letting Ash *win*
