So I've been using the M1 Macbook Air (8c CPU, 8c GPU, 8GB Ram, 512Memory) for about a year now. I did 2 major video editing projects on it. First one was a 32 minute video with a lot of clips but not too many effects. It handled it like a champ. The second video however, was different. It was a 60 minute video with tons of effects, texts, 4k clips, music, and so on. It took me 2 months to build that timeline and man, the laptop was to its knees. Everytime I opened FCP and tried to change something, 1 out of 3 times it would freeze and I would have to wait around 30 seconds to 1 minute for it to work again. and about 1 out of 5 times it would freeze without ever going back to normal, so I had to force quit FCP and open again (which is one of the reasons it took 2 months to edit that video). I'm not sure if the limitation was from my memory, my CPU, or the GPU. all I know is that it made me really frustrated. If you have a heavy workflow, I don't suggest M1 Air, but if you are a light editor, It will be just fine.
great this was a comment I was looking for. Going to get this M1 becuase if my projects get this big Ill move to my pc which has 128gb of game, 8gb GPU. 3.6 i9 processor. Its basically unstoppable and its impressive you did a 60min video on the m1
Gotta say that was the best outro EVER! 😄 As far as Project GreenLight goes you are an awesome dude and I so look forward to seeing the results of your giveaways! Gear is one thing but funding someone's project is an amazing gift and you could kickstart someones career with this kind of help!!
Just got the m1 and can safely say it is incredible even when running premiere through Rosetta. Exporting some 4K footage from an A7III with a bunch of layers and color and stuff took about the same amount of tile as my friend’s pc with a core i7-8700k an rtx 2060, and 16 gb of ram. (To be fair I have the version of the m1 air with 16 gb of ram)
Is the macbook air screen display good enough for color grading, or do i need an external monitor? Interrested with the same P4K setup to start youtube :3
@@feryfrost8572 I think the colors are pretty accurate, though some people may argue. I personally use an external monitor because the screen is too small
I just got my M1 MacBook Pro in February. Had to upgrade from my 2014 iMac. I've been editing on it as my primary machine until the larger 27in iMac comes out. I love this thing, it does everything I need it to do except cutting certain LOG cam profiles.
Gene’s giveaways are legit. I got a DJI gimbal for my mobile phone. Thx again guys. Love your ideas here Gene, so generous Thad you are all about giving back.
Sold my 2019 15” macbook pro for this when it came out. No regrets ever! I use fcpx to edit 4k, it flies through it! Also very portable and lasts so many hours in between charges. No fan noise and doesn’t burn my lap! Aaand.... waaay cheaper! If you’re thinking on getting a mac, this is the one!
The answer is simple. If you want to video edit, buy the MacBook Pro with the M1X chip (when it's released). The M1 Air is a great product but its main function is to be portable, have long battery life, and have light to medium tasks.
It's a tough call for me. The most heavy work I foresee doing is music recording, likely through Logic, potentially recording multiple tracks simultaneously with multiple plug-ins and such. I just don't want to run into a situation where I run out of power or things start getting choppy. I really have no idea if this type of workload is more or less than mild-moderate 4k video editing. Either way, I want to see what M1X will offer and for what price. I debate Air, M1X 14", or wait even longer for the new Air.
I just got a 2TB 16gb M1 Macbook air 3 weeks ago for my AE edits and works great so far, not perfect, but for that price and it being MacBook air.. it's amazing. The lack of built-in fan does reduce the speed overtime thou.
Honestly, the greenlight project would be awesome, and let me tell you, your dollars could fund some REALLY cool projects in certains countries where usd is worth a lot more than in yours. Waiting for you to go international.
Nah, I wouldn't call that being unlucky. It's just statistics. There are thousands of other people competing in giveaways each time. I actually like their new idea, because it will be less up to chance and more up to them to decide who gets the money.
@@anoushk Fantastic! I’m looking forward to seeing some of these benchmarks on the M1 now that the hardware will be utilized by Premier as intended! Thanks for that update!!!
You know what I really like that idea of giving the budget instead of gear! It gives creators more of a reason to create as we as share the content it's like an incentive on both ends, don't get me wrong gear is good too, but it's good to know he's pushing creators to actually do more! KEEP IT UP!
@@kareemm5232 Nope! I upgraded to 16gb ram and i had no trouble. Though theres only so much you can do on 13in macbook pro. So dont expect perfect performance but it was alot better then my 2015 15in 16gb intel macbook pro.
Flying people in and working with them for a day or two on a project seems really good. You get a video / video series out of it, people get their projects. Current problem is covid travel restrictions and price (further people are, more expensive it gets).
Thank you so much for everything brother… I love your genuine thoughts on products and photography. I take your opinion based on what you said and you never let me down!
That’s a good idea. I’m paraplegic myself and i’ve been wanting to create a youtube channel that would help paraplegics around the world, i just don’t know what and how to start it. LOL!
Hey Gene, hey guys, a year or so ago I bought the eos 200d after seeing a review you did and I’m super happy with it. If I would wanna upgrade, what would be the cheapest (oldest) eos-alternative that maybe has 120fps at 1920x1080 and possibly c-log? Thanks for your recommendations!
this is such an awesome idea, glad to see you starting this and sharing your wealth with those who want to do something but just cant afford it. Amazing cant wait to see what kind of stuff will be showcased!
I agree. M1 in MacBook Air is fast and battery so good.....but do miss the Mag charging cable and HDMI connecting through flimsy USB C is bound to fail!
What do you guys think about Project GreenLight? Think we'll see some cool projects come out of it??
Oh yes definitely 👍🏻
i love the idea and can’t wait to see what will come out of it!
Call it potato plane
Can W-8 BEN forms save us non-US based creators for Project GreenLight????!?
You could call it GeneLight - come on man!
You are such a good man Gene! Giving back to the community while being new owners of a fixer upper. It’s why I watch your channels!

Did you go for the 8 or 16gb of ram?
I have the air M1 8gb and it can't handle 4k 4.2.2 10 bit from Sony a7iv

The Potato Outro was adorable
Project Greenlight is an amazing idea and exciting!
A rare youtube video that is full of humanity. God Bless.
Great watch as usual. You're one of the RUclipsrs who encourage me to keep going. Been vlogging for a year now. Just about to hit my first 1K!
Im happy that you partly went crazy like in the old videos. Im here since 10k subs. That videos were fun. Creative and crazy. Thanks Gene.
This should be called the “potato launcher”
BEST. IDEA. EVER. for giveaways!!!!!!!
I hope this project gets big so people outside the US can also enter one day!
Yes exactly
This Samurai just blew it away. Awesome Potato jet
Call it "Potato Chips" since you're chipping in to fund their projects
The only RUclipsr I know that shares his success with his viewers. Even after buying a house!!! Gene you are the man!!
How does Sam look so out of it and yet is listening intently to what Gene is saying at 0:32?
That tile behind the stove = epic
As an editor, I must say your “pissed-off-o-meter” is incredibly accurate.
The base MacBook Air is the best laptop I have ever owned. In final cut it outperforms my 2014 27” iMac by 2.5 rending speed on a 4k timeline.
