I was sick of all the videos comparing export speeds. I asked one RUclipsr with very slick looking videos whether he planned to show what the editing experience was like on the M1. He suggested that there were too many variables but the same could be said for the comparisons he had done. Your video is one of the easiest to follow demos of what the timeline performance is like and as my needs are nowhere near as extreme and complex as yours, the base model should work well - just GH5 4K, keying, colour correction and some unnecessarily complicated effects.
Yeah, I know I’ll never reach the mass audience as other big RUclipsrs because all my videos are real world experiences tailored to my needs as a professional, meaning not everyone can relate to it. But that’s okay. 🙂
@@damiencooper personally I found this video much more useful than most of the comparisons even though my needs are somewhat less. If the base model can handle most of what you were throwing at it then it should handle my projects. The only thing nobody has really shown in the videos I've seen are much longer projects. Every now and again I will shoot a live play or something and won't have much control over lighting and various other aspects. They can be long projects with a fair bit of messing around throughout the whole thing... The clients usually aren't very discerning about image quality (they typically want me to make less than optimal changes). All in all the M1 should be better than my current computer ever was but hopefully it can handle things with minimal fuss.

yes me too. I really wonder if the MacBook Air throttles or if it's the same on the 13" with fan
But no one uses final cut anymore.... What about current pro apps like Premiere etc? Fast and stable?
lol at no one using final cut ;)
@@damiencooper avid, premiere, cinema.... FCP is like imovie now ..moved on long agao
@@macreviewz7187 well, depends when you moved on. They did make horrible choices and turned it into imovie with the release of version 10. But they since made lots of changes and it's VERY powerful now
m1 chew h265 no problem when editing so.... nice.....
Thank you for this! Do you think the high tier mba w/ 16gb ram and 8 core gpu is a better/cheaper option than mbp w/ same ram and gpu? this is a dilemma for some.
I know. Unfortunately I'm really not sure. I feel like it might as in my tests my performance kept going down the longer I edited. So the fan in the MBP might actually help with this! My GF ordered the high tier mbp so I will know more when it gets here
I'm also fascinated M1 Macs but problem is not playback raw or pro-res files, it's exporting. It takes more than mac with external GPU.
How is that? What specs on that imac?
@@Teluric2 I mean any M1 Mac.
@@dimitrimoonlight what bitrate have you been using in 4k to playback?
So encoding is not so fast? I have a M1 in my house not mine but not the performance youtubers said
@@Teluric2 I'm not talking about playback, it's for exporting pro-res 422 project. By the way it's 524Mb/sec files.
Thanks
Did you try running in better performance mode or did you stick to full quality? I’m not a pro by any means but I need to edit multicam 4k HEVC and ordered the 8-core GPU version of the Air with 1TB storage for some portable stage (ideally I don’t want external SSDs hanging off it). I won’t get the custom order for another month so hoping it’s going to be up to the task.
I did. You can totally get away with it when editing on the macbook but it looks absolutely horrendous on my 43" screen!
@@damiencooper That'll work for me. I still have my iMac 5K for editing for now, which I intend to replace once a new M1X, M2(?) iMac comes out... I need mobility and my iMac is not very mobile....
Why so much reminders of your IG? Also, why slo-mo of the screen playing slo-mo vids?
Wouldn't have the 16 gigs of ram solved most of your problems with the Air, other than plugs not working? I had an iMac 2019 midtier 64 gigs of ram and it was slow as molasses with my Blackmagic 6K raw... Just got the Air with 16 gigs of ram, 8/8 core and 1TB ssd
How does it perform?
I have been waiting for someone to make this video haha!
Not because I’m gonna get an M1 Mac but I’m definitely curious, with all the hype they’ve been getting, to see how they handle cinema Raw light.
I mean, I love that they have hardware accelerators that help crush the complex H.265 footage but my main camera is also the c300iii and I’m never working with H.265. It’s all raw or transcoded into ProRes so I’ve been curious about this 👌🏼
exactly. It's frustrating that my iMac doesn't edit the H265 well but all I really care for is the Raw
MaxTech just made a video comparing the new imac with the m1 mac mini and it's like you said. raw needs graphics power so with most of the raw codecs the imac outperformed the mac mini by over 50% in rendertimes.
Really excited about what is possible with arm in the future
@@L-e-0-n Yeah, no doubt. I'm happy for everyone who edits H.265 and can use these machines to crush it, but I just don't have that workflow. Excited for the future though.
I've shot a bunch of wedding films over the summer. Now comes editing time. I have a fully specked out 16 inch macbook.
Should I consider getting a M1 macbook pro?
What happened with the follow up video?
Sure you do
Great video thank you. Can you try some Canon footage in davinci resolve?
Great video. Have you tried using .mjpg codec from 1dx ii on the m1 chip? Does it work?
Great review. I think if you're going to do this professionally, either get the Pro with 16GB or wait for the next gen release. Won't be long.
Definitely 16GB for any pro apps (or basically anything but web browsing) in either the Air or the Pro. Storage has workarounds but the RAM is what it is, forever!
hi can you tell where did you get it at that price? thanks
Hi, nice video. If I am using Adobe Premiere Pro, FCP X, DaVinci Resolve on a base model of MacBook Air M1 but one at a time can this machine handle it? Should I consider 8 GPU 512SDD machine instead for the task. Considering the price difference of the 8 GPU machine is the base model MacBook Pro a better choice again it's just 256GB SSD. Confused between the three. Please help. If base model is fine for shot videos I am fine but please put in some light. Best!
Yeah …. My camera isn’t even close to r5 quality so I think I can edit 1080P 60 on this and it will be faster than my 2017 MBP
“I am not using my MacBook Air as my main workhorse for video editing”. .. never thought I would hear this.
Haha, I know right. How is this even a discussion now? :D
@@damiencooper I got me a M1 Mac Mini, as much I love the thing, I understand is a base model. Is you have a 2017-2020 iMac/MB you are probably ok waiting. I am on a 2013MBP lol, still M1 is just a test computer yet.
@@nyambe agreed. Totally sufficient for my mobile needs though. For everything else I bring my iMac :D
hi are you using the 8gb or 16gb Macbook Air? new subscriber here :)
same ques
8, he shows it in the beginning, re: !6 ram should be no problems he had
How did the higher spec’d pro run? I’m about to get one and I need to know.
How does pro res handle? I usually shoot 422 HQ. Great review btw. Real world tests are super helpful.
Easy. No problem at all
I was sick of all the videos comparing export speeds.
@@jacobpaint I wanted to test this on my youtube videos which are basically what you described. Long videos, lot's of different footage from different days, titles, etc. But even to this day not all of my plugins are migrated :/
@@damiencooper Yes, the plug-ins issue should be a big sticking point for many. It's less of an issue for me but hopefully they make things like neat video compatible before too long.
Which flavor of ProRes do you use to edit?
I always transcode to 422. I think it's the best mixture of quality and size
@@damiencooper Thank you!
Thanks for review! Hello from Russia :)
I might be fine using a go pro
What top handle are you using on your C300 III?
smallrig. There's links under my C300III review ;)
Great - I looked quick before I messaged but didn’t see it. Thanks and keep up the great content. I’m loving my C300III and I’m surprised how well it’s matching up with my A7SIII as a BCam.
@@fuzzynenja oh it is? nice!
Will it handle long 4k video editing say about 50 minute
So how is for standard capture card footage and h264 clips in the timeline @ 1080p. Is it fluid? And how does it hold up after a few fusion titles?
Don't have professional cameras so use camcorder and phone and stock stuff?
no idea about 1080, sorry. Never shot it never edited it with this cam
if i were to make a youtube video or something just in 1080 then added a few titles, transistions, masking effects, and probably colour grading.. do u think it would run smoothly or should i get the 16 gb verion?
Absolutely. No issue at all.
It’s all about the screen size at this point
@@damiencooper thx sm haha that just set my mind @ ease
Great video! What laptop would you recommend for £800
Well, that exact one I was reviewing 😉
if you can afford such an expensive camera, you definitely can afford a serious machine for editing! This is for beginners .... and low budget creators!
well.. we also have the top end 2020 mbp maxed out and it is much slower with some of the footage
Frankly I’d thought my $3000 fully loaded 27” iMac (2019) should be a decently “serious” machine. Keyword decently, I didn’t say invincible. The fact that it can’t play back untouched 4K clips from my R6 in premiere makes this a pretty relevant topic for a broad range of videographers.
It took me two years to save for my R6. No, we can’t all afford to just buy a new MacBook Pro. I have a fledgling business and right now it isn’t feasible. Something to think about.
hi pal , it's 8gb ram or 16gb ram?
8
What app do you use to transcode to ProRes?
final cut. It's the only workflow I've tried with good results
@@damiencooper Thanks!
