Lou Gehrig's been called the greatest first basemen to ever play the game, but Keith Hernandez has to be in the discussion among the ten best. He's the best first basement I ever saw in my lifetime when you combine his defense and pure hitting ability. He may not have been the long ball hitter, but he hit line drives and drove in plenty of runs.
Keith Hernandez was hands down the best fielding first baseman I’ve seen in my lifetime. He was as good batting 3rd in the order as he was in the field. He coached as much as he played. I can’t say enough about him and what he brought to the young Mets team. Carter was the final piece. I hated him as an Expo, couldn’t stand him. As soon as I heard he was a Met I jumped for joy and might have even cried a little, and loved the Kid immediately. Carter sealed the deal. They spoiled me, because they were a once in a lifetime team. It hadn’t been the same for me as a Met fan.
My personal favorite plate block of all time begins at 6:48, Mookie Wilson's throw is well up the Third Base Line, Tony Pena is arriving simultaneously, and Gary Carter catches the ball and bars entry. Saw this when first broadcast and saved the vhs tape, and I'm a Yankee fan. No gimme scores when Carter was catching.
In the 1986 WS, not one NY Met hitter could touch Bruce Hearst. Thank you to Keith who ripped the 2-run single off of Hearst to start the flood gates opening directly to a Mets WS victory. Not many hitters could have come through in the clutch as much as Keith. He was one of the few that was best IN the clutch.
me too.those hot smashes to 1st base that he would field with ease, and you just KNEW it was going to be a double in the gap whenever he came up to the plate..lol
I remember this.. I cried when they came in. I was so angry with the Mets. They should have retired as Mets! Awful decision from the brass.. and I’m a diehard
Gary Carter, Shea Stadium, David Cone (!), & the fact that half my family likes the Yankees-reasons I became a Mets fan. Is it possible for a player to have his number retired by several teams? I know the Expos/Nationals retired Gary's number.
They didn't. The only people who have their numbers retired by the Mets are Gil Hodges, Casey Stengel, Tom Seaver, and most recently, Mike Piazza. (and Jackie Robinson of course) You don't have to make a passive aggressive statement to put down others and make it sound like you're right when you clearly are not! And it's not like the information is secret; a google search would take care of your ignorance of the facts in seconds. Carter and Hernandez are in the Mets team HOF since they were on the best team the franchise ever had. I myself argue that Keith should go to Cooperstown as well, regardless which team's insignia is on his cap.
Reggie Jackson played almost twice as long for Oakland than he did for the Yankees and he has a plaque in Memorial Park at Yankee Stadium. He deserved it. The Mets would never won the 1986 World Series without Hernabdez and Carter.

This brought tears to my eyes. Well done!

Absolutely. Best ever and should be in the Hall, no doubt about it.
Facts. Guy is smart AF!
Their leadership made the mid 80's a "magical time' for NY Mets fans! Played for love of sport! Thank you guys! We miss you soooooo much!

These guys had heart and balls something the Mets nowadays lack in
erickh82082 Exactly
What Cespedes doesn't have heart? Haha, you nailed it, nothing Amazing about Mets like him
erickh82082 the Mets have heart again

kieth in 86 and carter unreal!
Gary was robbed of 2 MVP in My opinion' I loved him and STILL feel bad for him and theFamily ResT in Peace Gary You My Fav for ALL Time,
Do you think Hernandez could have fielded the Buckner ground ball?
With his bare hands even ...
Keith and Gary we're very passionate players, they played for the love of the sport and for team... not like players now they in it for the money...
R.I.P Gary Carter
Lets turn the clock back to these days.
We almost did in 2015.
Love to. No more bat flips, no launch angles, no more being bombarded by ridiculous stats that don't mean a thing.

The Mets won't do it. It took being put in the HOF for this backwards team to realize that they should retire Piazza's number!
Somehow Mookie always lost his hat or helmet lol
Um... Hernandez had a longer career as a Cardinal, and Carter had a MUCH longer career as an Expo. Why would the Mets retire their numbers????

Carter and Hernandez were two of the most important players in Mets history. Their careers elsewhere don't matter in that regard.
@@joshs4594 Well, Carter chose to have his Hall of Fame plaque showing him wearing an Expos cap. Go figah.

@@jpsned Carter wanted to go in as a Met but the HOF said he had to go in as a Expo
