Thank you so much for posting! I remember watching this back in 1984. What a year. I went to Shea for Doc’s first ever home start. It was a cold cloudy windy day at Shea and not a lot of people there. It was Easter Break so I had off from school for that game against the Expos. You could hear the ball popping in catcher Mike Fitzgerald’s catcher’s mitt as Gooden was dealing all day. I’ll ever forget it. It came full circle for me when I saw Doc pitch for the Yankees against the Mets at Shea in the summer of 2000. Despite all the issues Doc endured I still consider him one if he best pitchers I ever witnessed live.
@@chocolateflat-nosedfreaksh5263 really? 117 defensive runs saved, 60.4 WAR, and a career .384 OBP. and for a guy who was known mostly for his defense, he still had a career OPS+ of 128, better than Mark Teixeira or Tony Perez. his stats are fine. it's just that the voters and the veterans' committees don't value defense as highly as they should.
11 straight Gold Gloves. Think about that; for more than a decade, there was nobody in the NL better at fielding the position of first base. This along with uncanny clutch hitting & obvious leadership & consistency. Add an MVP, a batting title & 2 World Series championships with 2 different teams. If that ain't a HoFer, I don't know what is.
It is an utter disgrace that Keith Hernandez is not in The Hall of Fame!! He revolutionized the first base position.....and was a great clutch hitter...and as consistent as the Sun rising every morning.... I hope one day before I pass away I see him rightfully inducted in...
I was born in 1987. Really became aware of the Mets history and how great Keith is through his announcing with Gary and Ron about 3 or so years ago. Now they are all my favorite. Thank You for letting me really get a good picture of what kind of hitter he was. I think it is absolutely bullshit Keith isn’t in the HOF.
Thanks. I always thought there wasn't a really good Keith Hernandez highlight video so I searched RUclips for old Met games from the '80s and found some of his brilliance there. I hate the HOF voters because they prescribe to a certain set of rules. First and third baseman always have to hit home runs, and guys like Ozzie Smith can get go to the HOF with a .260 lifetime average while Keith is denied with a much higher average and two fewer gold gloves. I've always thought the voters should be players who were in the era of the candidates. I'm 100% sure Keith would get in that way.
Couldn't agree more. 11 straight gold gloves(the most at his position in baseball history) and being considered the greatest fielding first baseman ever along with a good clutch bat should be enough to get this guy in the HOF. Add in a batting title and an MVP award. Plus 2 world series rings with 2 different teams. Sadly, Keith is one of those players whose value can't be measured by gaudy stats.
Andy G I believe you're right. I only say this because year after year, Keith usually led or was near the top of the NL in game winning RBI. I'd forgotten about that. Just goes to show how clutch he was.
I was born in 1995, pulled this up on the day they retired Keiths number. I knew Keith was a star and led the team in 86, but havent really seen much of his playing days. This reel really shows how great of a player he was. Great ceremony today, and an incredible career.
My favorite as a kid...best fielding first baseman ever hands down, one of the most clutch hitters, and a smart player...borderline HOFer, but one of my all time favorites. Great tribute!
New York had two amazing first basemen playing at the same time in the mid-80s. They seemed like shoe-ins for the hall back then, but injury cut their careers short. Different styles of play, very different personalities, but both were beloved. Great hitters and gold glove fielders (Mattingly won 8 GGs)
I remember that night in June 1983 watching the Met game when Ralph Kinect announced “the Mets have made a blockbuster of a trade. They have acquired Keith Hernandez from the Cardinals.” I almost fell off of my chair. Seriously.
Keith is smart building a great career as a player AND an announcer - that could make a really good case for the Hall later on down the line - I just hope Keith is still around to see it, not like poor Gil Hodges. He was my favorite player on the Mets while he was there and he's one of my favorite announcers ever. But in my opinion, if it were PLAYERS who voted, instead of writers, Keith would be in the HOF.
Nobody.....and i mean nobody does the Kamikaze suicide running in to scoop up the sacrifice bunt and throws the runner out at 2nd like Hernandez. Can i just add that hearing Ralph Kiner brought back so so many memories especially 'Kiner's Korner". Lindsey Nelson and Murphy just lit up my nights on the radio my friends.
Keith Hernandez was born on October 20, 1953 in San Francisco, California to his Mexican-American father and his Italian-American mother. He spent 17 seasons in the majors with the Cardinals, the Mets and the Indians.
I always loved Keith's home run trots. Trotted with his arms out, but always quickly adjusted his helmet rounding second before going back into his trot
7:19, 7:59 Best quotes to describe Keith Hernandez offensively, spoken by two greats in Tim McCarver and Howard Cosell Also, Doc Gooden video coming out soon!
The fact that you can hear them laughing to themselves after the "I wasn't talkin' about the hotdog" is still, to date, the funniest shit I've heard in the booth. God damn that still makes me laugh.
@@chocolateflat-nosedfreaksh5263 Bravo! I like Hernandez, don't get me wrong, but as a Cards fan growing up in the 80's Clark was the man and to this day is my favorite.....other than George Hendrick in the 80's Clark was really the only bonafide "power" hitter they had for pretty much that entire decade.
Keith was my favorite met during the 80s. There are two types of HOFers. 1 Absolutely no doubt. Aaron, Ruth, Clemente, Musial Williams, Gibson, Griffey Jr. etc. 2nd type the guy's you can argue both way's for and against. Keith is the 2nd type. I sure would like him to get the call though. Maybe with his work in the booth --- who knows?
The problem today is that a lot of the guys who are the second type, at best, are being treated as if they are the first type. And some guys who are right up there with the best are being treated as if they don't even deserve consideration....Examples of the what I mean: ALL RELIEF PITCHERS. To me, putting a relief pitcher in the hall is like putting a pinch hitter in the hall. Take the case of Trevor Hoffman...he pitched to just over 4000 men in his entire career. KEith had over 8000 plate appearances, and the ysay his career was too short. It took them 15 years to get Edgar Maritinez in the hall, and he had more than 8000 PAs, too. Kevin Brown pitched parts of 19 years, and had the same ERA+ as Tom Seaver, who is regarded as one of the best right handers of all time, and he didn't even make it off the first ballot! Lance Berkman had a better OPS+ than Duke Snider, and he didn't make it off the first ballot! Some of these voters need to be replaced....
