Nice Racism & White Fragility with Robin DiAngelo

- Author of New York Times (NYT) Bestseller White Fragility joins Boston Public Library President for fireside-style chat about Nice Racism and White Fragility.
In this talk, Robin DiAngelo explains how racism is at play in white people and how to bring awareness on our condition, own racism to make change and stop living a segregated life.
About Nice Racism: How Progressive White People Perpetuate Racial Harm
Based on her second NYT Bestselling book, Dr. DiAngelo identifies many common white racial patterns and breaks down how well-intentioned white people unawarely perpetuate racial harm. These patterns include rushing to prove that we are “not racist,” downplaying white advantage, romanticizing Black, Indigenous and other peoples of color (BIPOC), pretending white segregation “just happens,” expecting BIPOC people to teach us about racism, carefulness, guilt and shame. She offers a series of reflection questions, an assessment tool, and a list of the skills and perspectives that can counter “nice” racism.
About White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard For White People To Talk About Racism
White people in the U.S. live in a racially insular social environment. This insulation builds our expectations for racial comfort while at the same time lowering our stamina for enduring racial stress. I term this lack of racial stamina “White Fragility.” White Fragility is a state in which even a minimal challenge to the white position becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves including: argumentation, invalidation, silence, withdrawal and claims of being attacked and misunderstood.GBH Forum Network ~ Free online lectures: Explore a world of ideas

It's arrogant virtue signaling and self-loathing whites all over the country are joining the parade.

So she said she’s working on herself to get rid of it?
@@Blueberry40 yes. She says that she understands that white supremacy is the water we're all swimming in, including herself. Diangelo also seems to understand that the dominant group can't rid themselves of it completely, but that they can do far less harm by working towards it

A person I met last night told me about Robin and listened to two long lectures last night and this morning and wow. She changed my life. A lot of us have been waiting for her. She's my hero. Everything she's saying is what I've been trying to tell people, white and POC my whole life and now I know why I've been failing. Thank you David for introducing me to Dr. DiAngelo.
Are you joking? You realise her book says, and I quote, "raising your child to be white is a form of child abuse", "anti-blackness is foundational to our identities ad white people", "be less white, be less arrogant, be less certain", "being white is to be on time". She is gross.

I appreciate her work. Robin is able to articulate how I experience systemic and institutional racism every day of my life. As a Black person I navigate two realities and I have only met one white person that I was ever able to talk authentically about the daily embedded experience of racism that is the reality in this country. I look at white folks and just shake my head at the utter and deliberate obliviousness about systemic racism and the privilege and comfort that it engenders for white people. Trust me whenever a white says “I don’t see color” that is an automatic red flag and I know that this is someone I have to watch out for and protect myself from.
Customers at my job needs to see this. That community is a mess.

Robin's work is brilliant. Just ended a 40 year friendship with a Williams College dorm-mate of mine over this very issue - which led me to googling (a concept I had observed with him) and then came across Robin DiAngelo's s videos and book. Never heard of her before this week. I just learned that despite my heroic effort, it is impossible to have a genuinely reciprocal friendship with someone when you live in the same culture but experience vastly different social realities due to differences in skin color. You're no longer peers because over time you develop resiliency and stamina and the other privileged person atrophies. Aside from difference in our skin color we are like brothers. I am actually bi racial and share 64% Northwestern Europe ancestry with him. The crazy thing is he doesn't see it this way. He instead exhibits all of the behaviors Robin writes abou when I mention the struggles I face in this society being treated as a second and third class citizen and profiled daily, hourly 24/7 365. It is more important for him to cling on to these beliefs denial than our friendship is to him. So I had to chose loving myself and let him go. It's been a sad couple days for me.

Dr. DiAngelo, I can’t help but notice, your research was done in the overwhelmingly white academics halls Westfield State and the University of Washington. My doctor who is white, and married to a black man, she said that RUclips studies how to upset people. I think calling someone racist is verbally abusive, but there are people who are white and verbally abusive who need to be called racist. I mean it’s when someone yells at me first because that’s the way it always is. And it’s always that someone insulted me first. I ask Robin if she means to be verbally abusive? But in the United States, Americans are mixed and not one thing. Like my grandmother married a Hispanic man after my Irish descent grandfather died. I believe that I like what my grandmother likes. Both my grandfather and my step grandfather seem handsome. So life is confusing. We should all have our own perceptions and opinions. I don’t like it when people call me Jewish because it makes me feel crazy. That I was told that I was wrongly diagnosed. I worked for thirty years for money and volunteered too. Robin DiAngelo. Someone asked me what my last name is. And then they seemed hostile. When someone yells at you first, they can’t get a restraining order or peace order against you. Because it’s abusive. And when you report someone to the police, you can’t insult that person or else the defendant can hold it against you. That if you insult someone and then they call you a racist, you asked for it. I don’t know if I descended from a slave or not. My great great grandmother was biracial. She was half Abenaki and she was born in Bennington, Vermont. Abenaki people are beautiful and nice people. I guess that I want to understand how this interracial love came to be in the 1800’s? I love everything that I am and everyone should. I try to be anti racist. I like blonde men. Kind of wonder how I ended up working with mostly African Americans and indigenous African people. And I am white. And I don’t look like a Native American and my name sounds English, but my dad was one hundred percent Ashkenazi Jew. So we can see how dumb people are. Obama was biracial. And he was handsome. And I am Pansexual so I have to deal with prejudices against the LGBTQ community. And believe it or not, people automatically think that I am straight. Robin DiAngelo is a genius. I rather listen to a person of another race talk about racism than white sometimes. It’s verbally abusive. I wonder if it is necessary to say racist. And then I had been around a bunch of African Americans for fun. That I love them. People are hostile towards me because my hair is light. I had people scream, “Blondie! Redneck! Skinhead!” And I got an A in anthropology. Yes. And I don’t like the b word. And the r word for people with intellectual disabilities because they are smart. And I am disabled. I have scoliosis and my back hurts. I like how Robin said that it is not bad to be white. That I like Robin DiAngelo. I had a Seminole doll when I was three. I understood that she wasn’t white. I am 40% Irish. From podcasts, the question is, I am white? I like Robin DiAngelo’s work ethic. I dealt with most of people being prejudiced against me because I hear voices. Sometimes. I have bipolar disorder. My family told me that I won’t make it in life. That I don’t think Robin DiAngelo is racist. She is a genius. That I started college when I was in my forties because people were like mentally ill people got to be locked away in mental institutions. And now I am an author. I am published. I am highly creative. I am poetic. And after the prejudices against myself, I love black people. And even though I have light hair, I had a biracial boyfriend. He had a stroke and was not the same. The telephone conversations didn’t work out, but he was good in person. Now I have a white boyfriend. He likes games and he is perfect for me. He is not boring. You are probably wondering why I was not there for the man with the stroke? I asked to visit him in the hospital, but he said he was too far away. And the more I think, the more life makes sense. I am not a person of color. And I don’t like that saying because there are white people with dark complexions. My dad makes me feel pasty. I wanted his complexion and felt guilty that I didn’t have it. That my hair isn’t black like his. But people are ridiculous sometimes when they stereotype the dumb blond. There are African descent people with blonde hair and I find it attractive. I think that I am Pansexual and get attracted to almost everyone. That I had a crush on this man who wore earrings. But I would never bother a minor or any vulnerable person. But I did have people find me attractive so what the hell am I complaining about my light hair. My niece looks like a model. My nephew should be a chef. He loves fixing meals. He missed a lot of school. But he is active. He is biracial. Every time he’s on the phone, I worry that he won’t grow anymore to be in the NBA like he wants to. Puberty makes life hard. Finding out about my sexual preference was hard because my father said that I will grow up to be a fine woman. A heterosexual. I am single. I don’t know what the hell. But I am not sure.

Neither does she. You have to pay attention to the message and stop focusing on the messenger. She says every day that guilt is not the goal here. She says she does not struggle with guilt. But none of that matters if all you ever want to see is "a con job." You can look up and study her work and you'll understand it's not about guilt. And then hopefully you'll learn something, if you care about deconstructing racism. If you don't care, then be honest about it and carry on like you always do, but stop crying about con jobs. Anti-racism is serious work for serious people.
@@vincentcerasoli5969 You are not deconstructing racism, you are creating it. It is dividing people. It is a total con job. She, like you, is using guilt and shame to manipulate people into her way of thinking. If I am not willing to do the work, then that means I am content to stay a racist, am I right? Such BS. I don’t know if you realize this, but this is the exact same type of arguments the CCP utilized on prisoners in communist struggle sessions in order to “rehabilitate”unrepentant capitalists and traitors. I call it brainwashing. You’re in a cult! Wake up! Di’angelo needs racism to continue, otherwise she’s out of the job; therefore it has to be everywhere. You can take any interaction between white and black people and concoct how racism is somehow involved. It’s not rocket science to figure out how they are manipulating people.
@@vincentcerasoli5969 So I do care because we are in the midst of a cultural revolution, and it is destructive, and it needs to be stopped.

Whiteness encompasses many things and she gives many examples. Quite a few of the comments indicate that she's right....and painfully stepping on a lot of toes.
Her position is unfalsifiable, meaning it’s set up in such a way that to deny her premise is, within her own construct, proving her premise. This doesn’t prove the merits of her points at all.
@Torsten Felder The comments don't indicate anything about Deangelo. If you actually look at the either/or premise, it's set up to do exactly what you did, which is to deny an individual's autonomy and ability to think for themselves. That's the grift, and it's about as ridiculous a notion as it gets. But, as you prove, it's effective. It's the deconstruction of a complex issue down to the basest mentality. It works because most people in 2023 gladly prefer the binary choice as opposed to digging in and learning.
Imagineitagain brought up unfalsifiability. Deangelo's theory is a perfect example of this. This is why Deangelo outright refuses to debate anyone or take questions from an audience. She's intelligent enough to know that she would be exposed for all to see if she had to prove her theory under any measure of scrutiny.
I came here to say exactly what the other two commenters have already said.
“I try to be less white. I _don’t_ mean ‘white people are bad, and it’s bad to be white’...”
How magnanimous of you, Robin DiAngelo, to give us your official “ok” to exist as white people...as long as we white people “try to be less white” 😆🤡😆🤡
You missed her point. She specifically clarified what she meant. You don't have to agree with her, but at least try to understand what she is saying before you assign a judgement.
All I wanna know is what to do/not to do to or in presence of POC to not harm them. All that wining over our white guilt makes no sense for me because it leads nowhere. And one more thing, she says “worldwide” but at the same time she is talking only about the USA and maybe little about Canada. Is she even aware, that not all the white people live exactly there? I’m polish and it’s an absolute absurd for me if someone tells me, that I should not feel comfortable in the society because I’m white and white oppresses the black and indigenous people. I’m indigenous in my country and I have no reason to feel uncomfortable on the street of my homeland. We have our history, it’s different than American history, or western countries history. So for me she is just talking to the Americans. I also noticed that it’s typical that Americans consider themselves the center of the universe.

I told my doctor what Dr. DiAngelo said. She said that is rude. My doctor is not white. It seems like Robin DiAngelo only likes everyone who aren’t white, but I am not sure because she always seems to be beating around the bush. She seems like a big rambler so her words get confusing. I didn’t live a segregated life so I think differently than Robin DiAngelo. If Robin DiAngelo doesn’t understand integration as a kid, how can she understand race? I find this confusing. I wish she immerse herself in a neighborhood that is not white or has only five white people. I lived in an apartment complex which had the majority of people were Hispanic. Because of this, I know that I don’t dislike Hispanic people. My grandmother married a Hispanic man after my grandfather died. Also, I would not be alive without interracial marriage, but I identify as white because I look one hundred percent white. My mom’s great aunt was half Native American and half white. People hate me for not looking like my ancestors. I am half Ashkenazi Jew and my nose is large. I have seen Jewish people with noses that aren’t large like mine. I descended from rabbi Israel Ben Eliezer. He’s famous. If you change the words, white fragility to Jewish fragility in Robin DiAngelo’s words, it sounds antisemitic. I actually read it that way. Robin DiAngelo did not start college late. I started in my forties. I say that college can make people stupid. Book smart isn’t street smart. I never read her books, so I can’t judge them whether they’re bad or good. I believe that it would be sad if Robin DiAngelo thinks that she is a racist. After putting up with being a minority white person for years, I don’t believe her because Hispanic people and white people can live peacefully together. Maybe instead of rude, Robin DiAngelo is negative. I like black men , women, boys, and girls. I don’t understand her logic. I think she is irrational and irrelevant. I think that she makes things up. I am thinking about reading one of her books. I like how she says that it’s like water dripping on a rock because it sounds poetic. Anyone who is a writer has a special type of intelligence except for Adolf Hitler. My grandparents were Ukrainian Jews who immigrated to the United States. My grandfather hired black men to work for him. That’s good. The question is, am I really white if I am as Native American as Elvis Presley? I am not Native American because I claim too little, but I went to school with a Native American and we got along. Black people are nice and I don’t understand why anyone would dislike them. What if Hennerstein and Murray are right in "The Bell Curve"? The various races of the Earth are not on average intellectually equal? SAT scores over the past twenty years or so bear that out.
Evidently you’re not using your intelligence to do the research on SAT scores. Do some research before you make any comments and then come back and make the appropriate comment. For further reference, many individuals on this earth are highly intelligent people. They are doing advanced math and science in the fourth grade. Unlike American children who never participate in advanced math or science courses. This includes white Americans.
Everybody is different from one another.

This video does not cite Critical Race Theory at any point. She does not quote or use the known works of any Critical Race Theorists in either her books or lectures.
All discussions about race do not equate to Critical Race Theory😉
She is by her own admission on her webpage and in her books a researcher in critical discourse analysis and critical whiteness studies - both based in critical theory. What is critical whiteness studies? According to Wikipedia and any university scholar in the field, it is an offshoot of critical race theory. Brown University's course on Critical Whiteness studies explicitly includes an analysis of Robin DiAngelo's work and her concept of White Fragility. Closely related is the larger field of critical social justice which Robin DiAngelo also has done research in - her book has it in the title "Is Everybody Really Equal?: An Introduction to Key Concepts in Critical Social Justice Education" - you are interested in how all of these subfields of Critical Theory are related, Northwestern University has something called the Critical Theory Cluster which is an interdisciplinary program that ties it all together and shows how critical race theory, critical pedagogy, critical social justice, critical gender studies etc... are all subdisciplines of the same parent theory - i.e. Critical Theory, from which they all borrow its name.
@@Helmutandmoshe What you have described is not Critical Race Theory. As I said, she does not quote or use the known works of any Critical Race Theorists. As I also said, all discussions about race are not Critical Race Theory, which itself is a very specific concept (the real Critical Race Theory course - not the imaginary one Christopher Rufo convinced gullible white people to be terrified of)😉
@@QuatMan Critical Whiteness Theory is a subset of critical race theory. And yes, at the City of Seattle RSJI trainings, Robin DiAngelo made this explicit. Her hand outs included writings from Jean Stefancic, Kimberle Crenshaw and Bryan Brayboy. Jean Stefancic, who is a colleague of Robin DiAngelo at UofW, was a co-lecturer with Robin DiAngelo at our City of Seattle RSJI training in 2012. I attended these trainings because I am a City of Seattle employee. Her book "What Does it Mean to Be White" directly references and adapts the work of critical race theorists Cheryl Harris and Kimberle Crenshaw in important sections of the book.
@@Helmutandmoshe Critical Whiteness Theory is not Critical Race Theory and is not included in any Critical Race Theory course. This video is not about Critical Tace Theory and her books are not about Critical Race Theory. Diangelo's books are specifically about white people. Critical Race Theory specifically identifies and quantifies systemic racism and how it is perpetuated. It is not about white people like DiAngelo's books. Scrambling to piece together tidbits of info you throw together to try make your untruth into a truth will not change any of these things. Being seen near the developers of the Critical RaceTheory university course, or participating on panels about racism, does not make her work or this video magically become Critical Race Theory.
Robin has done more harm to black people than just about anybody else...
How many Black people have you talked to that have validated your statement?
@Marcus Darden Truth is...Thanks to people like Robin...I'm afraid to talk to Black people...afraid I'll say something that's offensive and not even realize it. Afraid I'll ask a legitimate question and be told I'm a racist for even asking...that type of thing. That's what I think is wrong with what Robin is doing...I don't think it helps race relations for me to be made to feel this way. Frankly, I'm utterly confused with racial issues...just feels like things have gotten worse...feels like Black people hate me because I'm white...
@Lamont you should face your fears and do it anyway.
Blacks don't have a long history of physically attacking Whites, which makes me wonder what has caused your fear...
@Lamont Black people in general don't hate Whites.
In fact, many want to be White.
Most hate how they are viewed and treated, though.
@@pm8725 What is the problem? Someone tells you that something you said was racist / sexist /whateverist - you can ask for forgiveness and ask them to elaborate and teach you why they felt insulted. It's a chance for conversation and learning. Only, of course, if you actually do wish to learn.
I'm so grateful for Dr. DiAngelo's work and how she gives language to the invisible machinery of racism.
Same here! It is so interesting how those she is speaking of so often exhibit the very triggered and fragile behavior she speaks of, while never directly challenging ANYTHING SPECIFIC that she has said.
@@QuatMan White fragility is just a kafka trap to trip people up. It's hilariously manipulative and abusive.
@@yournumberonepal It is not a k trap because people can engage and even disagree without the meltdowns. It is the meltdown response that demonstrates the fragility.
@@QuatMan LOL, yes, my feelings are so hurt. What is clear, is that this group, is a group of collectivists, and they are intent on group identity, and indoctrination of other people into that racial group identity. This is basically what the white supremacist groups do, only they are preaching a positive identity while DeAngelo is preaching a negative identity. This isn't an either or proposition though, you aren't one or the other, you can be in neither group. I just find it incredibly sad that collectivism is still so strong and that resentment against people based on preconceived notion of their group affiliations is still so prevalent.
@@yournumberonepal In reality, she is simply observing how white people tend to act when confronted with race as it relates to THEM. No matter how much they want to believe they are all free thinking individuals, untouched by a greater white society, and it simply is not the case.

@@paulwakefield1015you’re just bandying around the word “racism” as if doing so equates to a meaningful point, just like every leftist does.
For one thing, no one who enacted or benefitted from/was denied entry by that act exists; this is 2023. Secondly, no foreigner has _entitlement_ to enter this country, then OR today. In the 18th century, countries of the world were almost completely racially homogeneous, and the newly formed United States was simply following suit. Guaranteed, if civilization exists 200+ years from now, there will be plenty of 23rd century virtue signalers all too eager to knock you and your “bigoted/antiquated/racist/whatever”posturing off your/its high horse. Evaluating standards of the past through a context of modern day standards is so intellectually dishonest that it’s childish.
It was “racist” that non-white people weren’t allowed to enter the United States through that act? So what? They weren’t U.S. citizens, they had no claims to anything of this country, they had no entitlement to citizenship (which NO foreigner has today), and we had no obligation to let them (or anyone else, for that matter) in. If the bar for “racism” is that low, the condition is meaningless. It’s not oppression when there’s no context of entitlement or obligation present. Furthermore, no such limitations have been in place for well over a century. There’s no legitimate claim of “oppression” by someone here today because someone in the far past wasn’t allowed to come here.
