  • Robin DiAngelo, author of the new book “White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism,” sits down with Community Equity Partners CEO Erin Trent Johnson and Mic Senior Writer Aaron Morrison to discuss one of the most daunting barriers to true racial equality. Buy a copy of “White Fragility” here: www.strandbook...
    In this groundbreaking and timely book, antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of "white fragility". Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo explores how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.
    Robin DiAngelo received her PhD in Multicultural Education from the University of Washington in Seattle in 2004. She earned tenure at Westfield State University, where she has taught courses in Multicultural Teaching, Inter-group Dialogue Facilitation, Cultural Diversity & Social Justice, and Anti-Racist Education. Her work on White Fragility has been featured or cited in Salon, NPR, Slate, Alternet, the Atlantic, The New York Times, and The Seattle Times. For over 20 years, DiAngelo has been a consultant and trainer on issues of racial and social justice, working with a wide-range of organizations including private, non-profit, and governmental. She was recently appointed to co-design the City of Seattle’s Race and Social Justice Initiative Anti-Racism training (with Darlene Flynn).
    Erin Trent Johnson is the CEO and principal coach, facilitator, and consultant for Community Equity Partners (CEP) and serves as the Senior Advisor for The Equity Lab. Erin works with organizations in the education, non-profit, government, and tech arenas that are committed to creating equitable and inclusive practices. Erin’s approach to coaching and leadership development helps organization leaders notice, name and disrupt systemic barriers to equity and inclusion within themselves and their organizations. As a coach and facilitator, Erin provides a dynamic learning experience for leaders that fosters personal and professional growth, transforms organizational culture and leads to community impact. Erin has nearly fifteen years of experience and leadership in education, community organizing and community development which has prepared her to support leaders in solving their own problems of equity and community building.

    I found it interesting that Robin D'Angelo felt compelled to answer nearly every question before Erin had a chance. That was definitely a manifestation of white supremacy -- "I must have a better answer than you, because I'm white." It is surely an example of internalized white supremacy. Also, in discussing the President, I think it would have been appropriate to point out the difference between white supremacy and white MALE supremacy.

      She's actually mentioned that in a public engagement once and acknowledged that as part of her unconscious bias. She knows that on occasion she speaks over people of color. This is the challenge for white people, when they are confronted with their often unaware and unintentional racist behaviors that we perpetuate on occasion.
      What people of color are looking for is where they can go with us, when that conditioning surfaces. They don't expect us to be totally free from our conditioning, that would be impossible. But if we are defensive and refuse to hear that feeback, then they know we won't put in the effort to try to do better. And then they may or may not stay in a relationship with us, but it won't be as genuine or authentic as we believe those relationships to be. That's what's happening with white fragility. All white people have some versions of it. How we choose to process that is what makes us individuals.

We stop letting these bastards bully people and fire and harass them for calling out killer kops or dirty D.As. This means keep your eyes and ears open. When you see something, say something. Yell from the rooftops. When white people speak out, stuff gets done. So please call it out. Stop letting things just slide. It might seem like a friend making a crude joke u don’t think is funny but you don’t say anything. But if your friend is a judge, prosecutor, police officer, public defender, doctor, nurse. I truly appreciate the great work that Robin DiAngelo is spearheading with publishing this book and discussing this extremely important matter for all of humanity. However, she did make a very troubling statement (perhaps without really thinking it through before she said it), nevertheless; troubling and quite arguably and historically noted: UNTRUE. The statement she made is "White Fragility mindsets held by white people is killing Black People." The statement was made in the presentation at Washington University on youtube. No one can forever curse what GOD himself has BLESSED. "BLACK" people are BLESSED!"BLACK people are LIFE. NOONE can kill LIFE!! Let me just say: No matter how evil racist people may try to Kill black people (and trust me throughout history we have seen this being attempted vehemently by Evil, Truly Evil White Supremacists), People of primarily African/Nubian ancestry will forever live on. The African genome is HOLY no matter what some antagonists have tried to brainwash the general public into believing. The people of African descent will forever live on. For God Almighty Himself has declared them HIS people for all eternity. Faith keeps the promise of Worldwide Glory Redemption alive and well. The blood of Jesus will always be the greatest power in all creation. This Resurrection Power will be demonstrated by the Global Triumphant Overabundant Restoration of the people of GOD, in this lifetime, IN THE LAND OF THE LIVING! What the evil intended for their harm, GOD is faithful to turn it all around for their GOOD. For all the naysayers: Just keep watching. Sill, Black Rises!!!!

      Racism will not bring us to extinction. I do believe God will not allow that, but institutionalized racism has killed many of us. The constant stress it brings contributes to our higher levels of hypertension. I'm normally a calm and relaxed person, but racism creates a condition of low grade stress that is constantly running in the background. It puts you in a fight or flight mode, even when we're unaware of it. That makes your body produce more adrenaline, which raises cholesterol levels. That's just one way it's killing black people. It's more than Bubba with a gun or a noose. Then we're more vunerable to the Coronavirus because of conditions too many of us find ourselves in as a result of institutionalized racism. It's incidious.

    This is not an actual viable idea. While it might be true that criticism of white fragility means the person has racial prejudices, it could also be legitimate. Shutting down all criticism as white fragility does mot make the idea of systemic racism or white supremacy true, nor does some sort of appeal to lived experience. These are cult-like ideas dressed up in academic language. These ideas should be treated like Scientology, not like accepted science.

    White “sensitivity”. Is that better than fragility? Whatever is making the message hard to receive by all, if your mind is open there is no resistance. Don’t argue what you don’t know. But that’s too much to ask. It’s empowering to everyone, just walk on by. By stopping and making a scene you in fact are showing your closed mindedness. That’s across the board.

    • @antwainmcgee2268
      @antwainmcgee2268 5 лет назад

      I think it all boils down to being closed minded. If we weren’t “given” anything then no one would expect it. It’s more prevalent in America because white people are perceived to be given things at a higher rate, so the expectation is higher, this leads to feeling entitled. Kids are a prime example, spoiled versus not spoiled. It’s just systemic so it’s complex and individuals can’t comprehend in life the differences if they don’t experience them. But it requires openness of the mind. So I think the solution is to focus on the mind being open, not the racial disparity.
