Excellent restoration of a badly mangled canoe. most people would have thought it a write off. So glad it found you. the professionally welded patches brought back the strength of the stressed aluminum shell. I learned a bit new watching this . thankyou , Ontario Canada
I just bought a 17' Grumman at a moving sale (for a mere $100!). Great shape, so no holes or anything more than a few dings to mess with. Just hoping to clean it up a bit and do whatever helps preserve its integrity. I've started rounding up paddles, life jackets, and such, plus watching RUclips lessons on good canoeing, ways to haul it, and so forth. Thanks for your contribution!
I have a 30yr old Grumman canoe with a couple of small dents. There is also a small leak from the bow area around the keel. Watching your video motivates me to fix my canoe myself! Thanks.
I have just bought a Grumman canoe from my neighbour for £150. Got a couple of small dents on her, but I'm keeping those as battle scars. The boat has had very little time on the water, perhaps two or three dips in her 20 year + . I plan on making her wet on a more regular basis. I will give the Alu a good buff and treat the seams with some ACF50 oil. Perhaps spend some money on those creature comforts that make a day on the water a pleasure and not a grind. I'm looking forward to many adventures. Thanks for the informative video.
You said the magic word; vision. My thought has always been if we can place a spaceship in Mars certainly we can do so many things in this planet, all that's require is a little vision and the courage to tackle what lays before us. Gracias, for taking the time.
I’ll be damned if your voice doesn’t remind me of Bob Ross the painter! It’s just as cool and calm! You should narrate stories for people to fall asleep to!
Thanks for your tips and repair. My 17’ Grumman was had a pine tree fall on it in a big wind storm. Ended up with a big old dent in the side of it. Might be able to use the tools to take most of it out But there is a pretty good crease also. Think I’ll need to get a professional for that part. It’s 50 yrs old and was in very good shape other than pealing paint and a few small dents. My kids n grandkids have enjoyed it too.
Great video thank you. It did the beer you played with the Sauter too much once it melt leave it. Every time you tap with the hammer afterwards you send little vibrations and opens up the crack again. Same thing with the grinder small vibration loosens up the bond between the original and the new aluminum you put together.
Raymond Cavanagh thanks for your views and comment. I tend to agree. At one point I just had to realize the tig was a better bond for structural rigidity. The braze was more suited for filling that gap.
Small holes drilled at the extremities of the cracks would stress relieve the cracks and prevent them from continuing. These little holes would be plugged in your welding/soldering operation.
welding for 40 years and a bead like that! that man needs to rethink his career lol, flux was a good call with that brazing rod, but you need to get the material hotter, notice how the puddle rolled off? it should be flowing into the gaps for a solid bond, you will notice you will not need to apply as much
Next time try wiping the surface down with acetone first really good. Aluminum is porous. Running a brush over it first works contaminates into the alum. Just a suggestion.
Thanks for your comment. I wish I was able to film that part where the patch was welded on since TIG welding is so lovely. It was during the height of the covid craze and he preferred to work alone.
not sure if anyone gives a damn but if you're bored like me atm you can stream all of the latest series on Instaflixxer. I've been binge watching with my girlfriend for the last few months :)
Great video - though have you ever stopped and checked how many times, and why, you use the word "like"? It, like. holds four people. Like or does it? Backtrack and try to see how the overuse of the 'like'' word detracts from an otherwise good narrative. Personally, like, it is so irritating.
You are the Bob Ross of canoe repair.

Congratulations on your new canoe!

Cheers Lucio. Thanks for your comment.
Two hunters, one weeks camping gear, generator, 4 horse motor, and a large moose ! No problem for a Grumman.

Man U sold me I want one now. Great video.
Nice to see dollies and Shrink hammer being used it's a lost skill these days as you say in the vid buy cheap and throw away . Thank you for sharing .
Giant canoe on a tiny car,,, oh my!

get that crease welded up with a patch by a pro... it's such a solid repair!

Great find. Love the way the inside is set up.
With the dolly?

great tip. Thanks for sharing!
Yup. I have an old Grumman that a white oak took a dislike to, and dropped a big branch on it. Now I need a welder that works with Aluminum.
Awesome video - thank you.
Great video, thanks.
Besides an awesome boat repair I didn't see anyone acknowledging an awesome rare 2d RAV4.
I love this little rig. It has outlasted several sports cars in my time with it.
@@robdude1969 Toyotas known to be stupidly reliable.
Great Job!!
How did you fix the bottom of the canoe after it was pushed in
He stood on it, and probably heated up the hull a little bit to release some stress/tension
Thanks, great video...
Cheers!
Just got two alumacraft canoes... one needs a tear in the side fixed. Going to fo something like this to it to
Where is this that you are boating? This is the second video I have seen with you tooling through a neat area.

Flux the joint?

How much did the welder charge for the patches? Just curious.
$100. Sounded good to me!
@@robdude1969 yea, that sounds very fair. Have fun.
How much did he charge you if you don’t mind me asking?
I gave him a hundred. I think it was more than he wanted.
The Flexseal dude would be all over this..
Nice job, but I would have put the welded patch on the inside and smooth out the outside. Just my preferance.
The thought was that it would be better sealed this way.
Skip to minute 23 when he tells you he brought it to a professional welder.

Deveria usar um disco flap
JB Weld for the inside
Note, all his initial repair using melt stick DID NOT WORK. He had it professionally TIG welded, mentioned 1x at about 24 mins.
CORRECT YOU ARE! The cracks were too long and under tension. Thanks for watching.
Story has it that the Candyland Mafia use this to get rid of Jimmy Hoffa and the Three Little Pigs...
A free canoe with a torqueedo.
Lol. They were separate acquisitions.
A parte de cima tu bateu demais deveria de ter chegado entortado para baixo sem precisar bater demais.
Kind of sounds like your are whining about the damage on the FREE CANOE! Did you think he should have paid you to take it?
Not whining... just ruminating on the condition it was last in and exploring the route to new use. Cheers to you and thanks for watching.
