Thank you very much for your review! It was very fair, and your critiques brought up a lot of valid points. I'm terribly sorry the game is progressing so slowly, but I promise you that it will be finished! Thank you again for featuring my work. c:
Don't be surprised if I do videos on more of your games. From what little I've played of The Looking Glass, and seen of Huntress of the Hollow, you achieve a vastly higher level of production value than most other people.
I think the reason the good fan games tend to not be complete is that they tend to have more time put into them. That's not to say that the worse ones haven't had a ton of time pored into them, but generally speaking the more effort spent the higher quality product, so the ones that stand out due to the effort put into them and the quality of the content tend to be harder to finish due to the already limited time of people making games for free.
I feel like Flesh Child shouldn't even be called a fan game. It really looks like its OWN THING. Sure, it's got, "effects" but the visuals and story seem to separate it nicely. Like instead of being all about dreams, there is a concrete goal in here: "Collect body parts and become human, or at least something close to human."
+Agent Swivel A.K.A Virgo Actually holy crap I just realised that the artwork is very Homestuck-esque maybe that's part of the reason why I like it so much.

I think RPG Maker 2003 is pretty restrictive with hotkeys. You really can't do much more than the thing 2kki did with the Shift key. Using the pause menu as the only equipping method is also useful for the programmer because if you want to prevent the player from equipping effects during events, you just have to forbid access to the pause menu. I'm surprised no one else thought of unequipping with the 3 key, though.
I can't believe it took me this long to find this review! And your name is also Nitro, ha ha! Anyways I'm glad you really liked fleshchild, and I'm very pleased you liked the music I've created for it. Aw, Yume Graffiti got an update in early 2017, only a few months after you made this video. It made a bunch of places more interesting and updated a lot of the graphics too. It's kind of a shame that the update wasn't out yet when you reviewed it...
I'm glad you decided to make another video about YN fan games, as that was the original reason I subscribed. No one else on youtube really goes into as much detail about reviewing these games, so I really do appreciate what you're doing here.
I completely disagree with you about Yume Graffiti. It's one of my favourite Yume Nikki fangames, and I've played a lot of them. I found the music absolutely gorgeous (enough for me to put some of the tracks on my iPod), the panoramas detailed and beautiful, and the events memorable and interesting. For example, I got a strong feeling that the chasers represented someone in Yomika's past who she inadvertently caused harmed to and now is plagued by feelings of regret for, due to events like the one where she pushes a chaser off a building and the one where she breaks down crying over the dead chaser (which, may I note, is in the area below her treehouse, which suggests that the chaser fell from a great height, therefore relating it to her pushing the other one off that building). Yes, you're right that many of the game's areas strongly resemble ones in Yume Nikki, but there were also many original ones, and that combination was something I liked. Something that I found unique about Graffiti was that it seemed to be nature themed - if you look at the effects, the fact that Yomika lives in a treehouse, the design of many of the areas, you'll get what I mean. All of this gave the game such a beautiful atmosphere to me, and I also got the feeling that Yomika was confined to her treehouse because of some sort of environmental disaster, which is distinct from the circumstances of most protagonists of YN fangames, which is that they're simply "hikikomori". The endings further contribute to that, as they suggest that Yomika simply *can't* leave even if she wants to.
When I saw Fleshchild I clicked on the video in a heartbeat. Also I would like you to continue this 3 game video type structure in the future. Not necessarily Yume Nikki fangames but maybe different categories but maybe you could since as said there a endless amounts of Yume Nikki fangames.
played the original release of fleshchild way back in 2012 and kind of forgot about it soon afterwards. glad to see others appreciate it and give that artist some love!!
I was thinking about Yume Nikki and when looking for fan content I stumbled upon this video - thanks for going over these when you did! It's a shame how many interesting RPGmaker projects have died over the years. I'm still hoping for a renaissance where new game devs can receive the support they need to develop these artistic personal projects.

I would love that. The thing that first drew me to this channel was Nitro's review of .flow, I love that game to death but nobody ever talks about it :( Still, 3 Yume Nikki fan games a month would be a huge time-sink and an awful lot of work, I would think. These 3 games really put into perspective like. What's really the most important thing when making a game? The first one seems to strive a lot for effort; they didn't seem to have lazy out at any point but at the same time, taking from the personal opinion of NitroRad, they really didn't have a lot of creativity behind them which makes all that effort kinda pointless The second one on the other hand seems really creative but doesn't put too much effort into itself, using stock assets and everything. But they did deliver an ending and everything... The third one is very creative, and has a LOT of effort, prob more in both departments than the other two combined...but it isn't finished, and it might never be as the creator cancelled it. So all we have to go on is the demo, which (personally) only makes it worse for me knowing that such an awesome game won't come into fruition. I'd rather have stayed ignorant.
So I've started working my own Yume Nikki fangame called ritual denial and I'm watching a lot of your Yume Nikki videos to see what you like and don't like about these fan games to try to see what might need improvement in my game, even if I disagree with you on some points. Thank you so much for being a part of the process of making my game.

18:40 Agreed, honestly I feel kinda bad getting some of these games for free. Flesh Child, when complete, really SHOULD have a price tag on it.
Same for Mogeko Castle. I would have paid MONEY for that game.
Just a question out of curiosity, do any of the Yume Nikki fan games actually have a male main character (ignoring fleshchild of course)? great video btw
Yeah, there's some. But most of them have female protags, probably just because Yume Nikki had one.
Kaiser Crimson Someday has Itsuki, who is a guy. It's also really good.
Kaiser Crimson Device has Motatsuki, which has headphones
i see, also i think the Me is pronounced like that because it means "eye" in japanese, she doesn't show her eyes, her dress seems to have an eye symbol, and the dog in the mini game also seems to have an eye mark in the belly
