I'm sure it was coded by the owner of the channel using a game making software (Unity3D for example), making that it does exist in a sense. I hope the game gets released on Gamejolt or Itchio, so I can try it out myself.
Fun fact: Petscop can be pronounced "pet shop" in Old English (not like Shakespeare, much older). Idk if it even plays into the lore but in Old English "sc" is often seen as an "sh" sound. Biscop, for instance, is "bishop". It messes up my brain to see it, though.
It's entirely possible that the Petscop creator built the game on a Net Yarozee system, making it legitimately run on PlayStation hardware. It would explain how the game is so accurate to PlayStation software. I believe it was even suggested in-story that that was how the game's creator made the game. As for the possibly fake low resolution; the Net Yarozee system was made to allow you to run the games you create on your computer so you can, you know, make them. It could be that the Petscop creator had to recreate the low resolution after running it directly on his computer.
Kurt Yarish you’re a genius. Like, I know what net yarozee is (thanks caddi) but everyone forgot it was even a thing! That’s probably the Asnswer...good on ya sir...
Everyone! Petscop has come to an end! We now know who created it! He released the game's soundtrack! The guy, Tony, even made more games before, one of them even called Nifty, supposedly made by, guess who... Garalina.
Nitro Rad makes the best Halloween specials. His amazing Silent Hill series brought me here, and as we all know one does not simply leave Silent Hill...
I noticed when you were scrolling through the videos, you changed some of the channel names like the Game Theorist to "The Lame Theorists" and Pyrocynical to "PoopyStinker" that was just a nice little edit I liked.
Not a well known fact: It' Halloween all year round. I mean, if Christmas stuff can be sold in August already... I've never seen somebody actually analyze the actual game design or even paid attention to. That's what I like about your channel. Also nice Don Hertzfeldt wallpaper, James.
Every game theory channel ever: “What does it mean?” Then gives some long winded explanation as a recap to make them seem smart Nitro Rad: “What does this all mean?” Straight up acknowledges the fact he has no clue what’s going on and admits he’s not smart enough to figure it out just like the rest of us watching petscop. GOD I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!
No one knows for sure what the fuck is going on anyway. So all those theory youtubers say a bunch of bull to get clicks etc. Especially matpat oh how has this guy fallen.
I don't know what's scarier. The series being discussed in this video or the fact that this video is called "Halloween Special" and it's less than 2 weeks into September.
Coming back to this after Petscop 17-24 is surreal because of how accurate the predictions were. The game did save previous recordings of other people playing the game, and it might explain why the other characters seem to have a mind of their own. It’s scary how accurate the prediction was lol
Heeelllllll yes dude I love Petscop. I wasn't expecting you to cover it but I figured it was up your alley. What a pleasant surprise you made a video on it. Also holy shit, BNHA poster and World of Tomorrow desktop. Nice.
You should really check out Concluse, Helltown and Ok/Normal! They're all heavily inspired by games of the late 90s with both Concluse and Helltown taking heavy inspiration from Silent Hill, Jacob's Ladder and David Lynch. Ok/Normal is more like LSD Dream Emulator meets a horror game with platform elements. Especially Concluse is scary. Even though it was a free game it scared the shit out of me like no other game did in a long time! EDIT: Concluse was also set up to look like a webseries (just like Petscop), from all the games I recommended to you, this is the scariest one!
First video I've watched that considered the production side of Petscop. I liked it! It feels weird to step back out of the lore and into the real world and consider how this project is actually made, but in a good way. Petscop is so immersive for me that considering the actual steps someone was going through to make this happen hadn't really occurred to me. So thanks for encouraging that line of thought and speculating in that direction!
I guess I'll come back and finish watching this once I actually watch the videos, good to know that unlike ben drowned there's not a whole bunch of other mediums through which the story's told that make it harder to follow. Read up on Candace Newmaker, that's downright sickening. I don't understand how someone could allow that.
I watched the entirety of Petscop (so far) yesterday. I think I was too scared to truly analyze what was being shown, but you've certainly got me interested. This really is one heck of a project.
Oh MY what an incredible concept! I didn't knew that Petscop wasn't a game until I saw this. Thank you for reviewing this, you're my absolute fave RUclipsr! ^^
I love petscop because of the person you play as. I haven’t played a ps 1 game (yet) but I really like it. If I was going to make a game it would have graphics similar to petscops. But it won’t be scary
this is honestly the best video I've watched for petscop. it actually makes sense and helps piece some of the more confusing parts together, as well as explain some of the more technical stuff I'd never know. this is so, so good, keep it up!! :)
I love the concept of Petscop. Video games are a fairly new medium in themselves, and Let's Plays even newer. I bet we'll start to see more of these kinds of productions in the future though. I highly recommend people check out Supergreatfriend's series of Bully Demise let's plays spread over a number of games, one of the earliest examples of a continued narrative told through Let's Plays.
I actually screamed of happiness when I saw the notification! I absolutely love ARGs and creepy web series, and got even more excited since you never covered anything like this before. Also it's really cool that you've delved into the production when no one really made a video about it. At first I though maybe the person was actually making it for the PS1 and recording for it, while using Net Yaroze (but after some time and talking to other people I came to a similar conclusion that it was made for the PC and given the proper effects). Can't wait to see what's more do you have up your sleeve this Halloween special! :D
My theory is that Paul is actually making a game, called Petscop. He’s actually gonna release this game, and he’s posting this series of videos to drive up interest for the game, so that when he releases it thousands of people will buy it. This makes sense to me as it’d explain why the game is so well made, because Paul is actually a game developer that’s making a new game. That’s just my theory, and even if it’s wrong I really hope Paul releases the game someday. If it’s running on a real console, then the ISO file, if not, then the .exe.
Man now that I think about it a lot of old writers used to write fictional stories saying they took them from an old diary or something. Maybe Paul is doing the same thing!
Hearing the Persona 5 music at the end really confused me because I was playing Person 5 while I was watching this and I thought the music in game was overlapping. Also thanks for another great episode Nitro.
Best most unique Petscop review/analysis ever . Fantastic job Nitro Rad . I love how you didn't watch other videos on it , so it makes your opinion and commentary fresh and interesting .
Every time I see one of these ARG's based on a game for a retro console, especially the PS1, I can tell straight away it isn't running on real hardware, now, I don't claim to be an expert in PS1 hardware (I've put more time into the Saturn), but I do know that it has two hardware flaws that are not accounted for in this, the first being linear approximation, which would result in affine texture warping (for an extreme case look up Darxide on the SEGA 32x). The second being what I call vertex popping (the real name escapes me) caused by the low accuracy of the geometry engine, look at the snow-covered floor in the first level of Tomb Raider, notice those black lines that appear every time the camera moves, that's what I'm referring to. These issues can be reduced (normally by subdividing polygons), but not entirely rectified, the grassy area, which appears to be an infinite scrolling playfield, would be plagued with both these issues, not to mention taxing on the hardware (only the Saturn's VDP2 could render perspective correct infinite playfields without affecting performance). I honestly think they should have said it was a Dreamcast game, as it has none of the aforementioned issues, and there's no easy way of ripping GD-ROM discs (in contrast, PS1 games are the easiest to rip, thus no "ISO when?"). Another issue I have is naming the channel "Petscop", it kinda breaks the illusion of "a random guy got a hold of an unreleased game", it's like a you-tuber creating a new account for every play-through, he should of just used his name or a random alias like everyone else.
I was a little wary at first when I clicked on this video, as other game reviewers/channels have not done this web series much justice. But I am thoroughly impressed with your understanding of the material and the way you handled it. I think I am also inclined to agree with the bulk of your theory, and would love to hear you elaborate more on it. GREAT video!
Whoever came up with this is nothing short of brilliant. Also, I love that you covered Petscop. This is exactly why I love your channel. Never would have known about it otherwise, and it's worth talking about.
I personally think that Marvin and his missing friend's sister adopted Care and then divorced a while after. The green squares on the calender could represent the days that Care spends with Marvin, and the white squares represent the days Care spend with her mother. At first the squares only appear on weekends, for short amounts of time. They then appear every other day, and then every day. I think Marvin broke into Care's room and kidnapped her from his ex wife. This has a few holes, but the whole calender thing immediately reminded me of my friend who stays with his dad on weekends because his family is divorced. Hope this helps.

Yo James I really appreciate the new approach you took to this review! I've watched a couple others and, while the story theories are interesting and spooky, the game design aspects you brought up were fascinating. Thanks again for a great video!
You totally have to do another theory video on this series after more parts come out, dude. You make it all seem so easily understandable and simple! I get the whole concept of theory videos ruining all the fun, but this video was one of the most spectacular ones covering the topic by far. Thanks for the content! Love u
