Thank you for leaving this comment! It's something I've been wrestling with and wondering if there was an audience and value in this perspective. I will continue to do more reviews like this, and in the event that I review something new, I will continue to review it every few months to let the viewers know if I feel its worth keeping.
I am grateful that there are reviews like this instead of someone capitalising on launch hype and making many buy a device that they may not even need. Just GAS.
I love hearing what sounds you come up with, very original. I have a Digitone and I’ve realised that I’ve only scratched the surface of everything this instrument can do. The Elektron boxes are so full of potential.
Love your perspective bro, I think you've carved out a really cool niche for your channel. Also, it's really cool to see someone use Elektron boxes for boom bap + related genres
I appreciate that! i'm absolutely going to do more long term user reviews on the channel, and also reviews based on using these instruments for certain genres. Thanks for the feedback!
a year later, after getting this box as my first entry into the hardware and falling in love with it's arp, baselines and atmospheric patches, i came back to your video and every word you say makes so much sense in the retrospect. i thank you for the sincerity and for sticking close to your archangel's voice, keep the purity, keep them sonic waves coming, you're the man ❤🔥
I love your way of keeping things fresh with the spontaneous wordsmithing. You bring some cool insights to the table. I heard you mention house as a music genre and I honestly want to hear your take on some house! I guess a lot of "what house is" opens up the mind to interpretation and there's some particular feel in house that keeps me looking for good house music. I also was pleasantly surprised with the Boards of Canada sounds starting around 17:47 while I'm typing, noting that BoC is one of my favorite artists out there, taking me back to when I began exploring the rabbit hole. Mmmmk that was a lot!
Thanks a lot Sophia! yes, I enjoy being non scripted and speaking from the heart. Yes, i know what you mean about House, I'll have to post some soon. It's hard to find really good House music that has soul... same for a lot of Techno. As for Board of Canada is one of my all time favorites!
Dude, these vids are next level, i can tell you have a special relationship with those elektron boxes, that's why I am drawn to your channel in the first place. Comes from the heart, wise words. I'm also on year 4 with my dn. Appreciate your thoughts and music.
Glad you like the video! Yes I really enjoy using elektron instruments, I started on the Machinedrum 8 or 9 years ago and then got the DN+DT... I have been hooked ever since. I'm going to continue to produce more review videos like this on a regular basis.
What I appreciate is that you are using gear that is dated. I have a Digitone, a Novation Circuit, Korg Electribe, Volca FM, Wavestate, MODX7, Ensoniq ASR-10, DX7, Roland SH3A and the complete Arturia suite. I can't see myself buying anything new until the time I can say I am proficient in all of them. That will be a long time coming. Thank you for the reset on my train of thought. Current stage rig is just the MODX and the Wavestate - both very capable instruments and both capable of handling samples from the other gear I have.
You have some of the best videos around. The Buchla-style Digitone stuff. The wide range of uses, styles, and just creativity is tip top! Also, the Digitone is probably in my top ten instruments of all time. It does SO much.
Been going back to my Keys lately, got burnt out by Digi a year ago. Returning to it with a modular influence workflow has helped me, and seeing this video is definitely an inspiration to how to utilize that knowledge of creating generative works with complex oscillators can translate to Digitone. Great stuff.
I totally see the Digitone as a 4 track modular synth in a box with patch recall and no cables! I've been translating my patch ideas from my Eurorack modular into the Digitone. Very inspiring instrument.
Such a valuable perspective, thank you. So many people are riding that “synthfluencer” wave just to push product short term. I didn’t click with the Digitone when I first bought it 4 years ago, but I’m seriously reconsidering it now. Thank you for all the great content, happy new year
I really appreciate that, I'm putting forth effort to carve out my own lane and not step on any other reviewers toes. More content like this coming soon.
Thanks for this 🤗. Love the idea of using the arp differently. Can i ask how you create the nice background? I do videos as well & would like to add nature backgrounds that don't look cheezy like they do when used a zoom call.
Excellent point about arps. From the stand point of a Triton user, the arpeggiator is often times the way i work in a grid based method of programming drums. For a keyboard from the early 2000’s, it’s striking how similar the arp editor is to the modern mpcs grid view. Many of the tritons presets program the drums in this way
This is really what I needed to hear ... not a fan of EDM (no judgement, it's just not my thing) and my sense was this was what Elektron was all about so I just dismissed it for my wants tbh. Just not looking for static click, click, click, boop, boop, boop. But you really broke it down and broke out of the 4/4 ... love it. Esp 16:45. Subscribed.
Wow! thanks a lot for the feedback! I thought it would be good for me to shift the channel in this direction and comments like yours encourage me to continue to create more content like this!
Great review man! I just got a Digitone again after you reminded me how capable it is. The sounds were a bit too sterile for me back then. But now i got enough pedals and stuff to dirty it up a bit. Thanks for the inspiration!
I was very close to selling my Digitone last year because I was having a really hard time getting the sounds I wanted out of it. After putting it aside for about a year I pulled it back out about a month ago and something just clicked in a way it hadn't before. So glad I kept it. Great video, and in-depth look at what this amazing little box can do.
Really helpful video. Considering getting one of these as a synth to go with my Digitakt. You mentioned Digitakt; I assume they play nicely together and make a good pair? Keep up the great work.
@@VoltageCtrlRtv Awesome, thanks. Would you say the Digitone's UI does a good job of shielding you somewhat from the scarier, more mathematical aspects of FM? Or is it still very much a case of, unless you get your head into FM theory you won't get much out of it?
12:27 Love these sounds and the Buchla flavors you have been creating. Whats the first thing I should do to make similar sounds? Thank you for always sharing :)
well... theres a lot going on in that patch, I guess the first step would be random lfo to oscillator pitch, I also have a lot of cross modulation, probability and effects etc. contributing to the sound. Thanks for watching! P.S. I do offer one on one Digitone classes specifically focused on Buchla inspired West Coat synthesis.
This is cool. I am looking at the Digitone, and the Syntakt..and now the Roland SH 4D. Unfortunately, the Roland just mainly sounds cheesy, to me. I am completely new to this type of machine, but I can only afford to get One more thing. Not to mention the learning curve. I am a guitar player, so I still need to work on that..I need something that's not too hard to learn, and sounds Interesting. Being 63 years old, now, I don't have a lot of time to waste..lol! Thanks!
sometimes I think this fits me better than the digitakt. i mainly make my own sounds from noise and resampling. fm drums, fm bass, fm everything is good
Great job Volt! The shilling is getting out of hand these days, the synthfluencers are desperate for new gear to sell. That drumloge launch was cringe af. Digitone is a whole universe unto itself, I love mine but can we get that folded keyboard from the syntakt on the digis too?!?
Thanks a lot for watching and for the feedback. i'm going to camp out in front of the elektron LA office and go on a hunger strike for the fold keyboard to be added to the other Digi's
I love it when you get a review from someone who has had the device for years, not just the 2 weeks before the product drops.

Thanks. Not a cheap piece of equipment but I'm drawn more and more to it. Great review. I hope it doesnt take me 4 years to learn how to use it!

Do you still use rhythmic patch sketches from other (non-elektron) gear (ie Hydrasynth) into the DPS sample flow?
Absolutely! that's one of my favorite things to sample into the Octatrack. i'll have to make a vid
