    For fittings, don't forget PM Research! They are an excellent company with great customer service, and they have some beautiful already-machined cast bronze elbows, couplings, globe valves, check valves, and even a cute little whistle valve. They're also a great place to get obscure model pipe taps (1/4-40, etc) if you're in the US. They are proud of their taper taps and dies, but they are worth it.

      Thanks for the information, I seriously want to get into this , but I am not sure about if there are any clubs in Jersey or close by? Do you have any information on the the clubs and areas there are in my neck of the woods? Or is there any listing on line of the clubs and there whereabouts? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    Super awesome video! Just like any hobby, it's definitely really expensive. Personally, as much as I like steam, I would be willing to try and custom build a diesel loco. With the help of some friends who know how to work with sheet metal, weld, configure electronics, motors, and everything else involved, I think building one where about 75% of the build is custom made would be much cheaper. Not sure if it's something I would actually do, but later in life if I had the money and time, hands down I would definitely go for it! For now, I'll stick to model railroads and train sims 😅

      To be fair, part of the problem is that no one makes anything entry level. The entry level for large scale live steam is "run someone else's locomotive while you save up for your own".

    I really wish a vendor would sell a complete kit for an engine. I'd much rather have a crate with all the materials and parts I'll need rather than having to order castings from one shop, a boiler from another, valves from a third, and on and on and on. Given that building an engine can take years, you're really taking a gamble that suppliers will even be in business by the time you get to a certain part of the process. Quit calling your castings a kit. That's not a kit. Sell me a kit.

    • @kleetus92
      @kleetus92 5 лет назад

      I'm sure anyone who offers a RTR engine could supply the raw unassembled parts, but I'm sure there's some back and forth fitting that has to happen, even did on the real ones... then someone turns around and says 'it's not right'... which is probably why nobody bothers.
      But, answers are just a phone call or email away.

    • @TheSteamChannel
      @TheSteamChannel  5 лет назад

      Anyone familiar with building would know why that isn't practical...there are a lot of custom parts on each engine and each builder may elect to use different material based on his/her tastes and budget. Instead of cheap 1018 steel for axles, for instance, someone may want 4041 heat treated and ground. Some may want to replace certain castings with scratch made parts from steel stock. Some may want stainless steel main rods while others use the castings. 10 builders may want to attack any one thing ten different ways. It's not like ordering the material from McMaster Carr or a local steel house is that difficult. Once you have a set of drawings for the engine you are building- it really doesn't matter if the company folds. You can custom make any parts from the prints.

      As someone who can be considered a newbie to this hobby, I just want something that I can bolt together and run that doesn't cost as much as a new car. I'm fine with just doing final assembly on a kit that someone else engineered for my first big live steamer, my dream build can come later when I've gotten more experience and a better income. Surely I'm not the only one?

    • @TheSteamChannel
      @TheSteamChannel  3 года назад

      @@VestedUTuber All of the money is in the machining of the parts. You will not get around that expense if you're looking for a bolt together live steam kit in 1.5/1.6" scale. Jesse Banning was going to offer machined kits for the Little Engines 0-4-0 in a limited run that would be done in stages....the pricing was $25,000. If you're looking for a budget friendly kit to bolt together, steer into electrics. Pacific Design Shops offers a 23 tonner kit that is under $2,000 and I believe the RTR engine is $2,250.

      @@TheSteamChannel
      I've seen those Little Engines 0-4-0 switchers. I can already tell you that there's a huge issue with producing those as an "entry level" kit - they're still every bit as detailed as the full custom commissioned locos. Just cutting down on the detail and using waterjet cut frame components and stamped sheetmetal instead of sticking everything in a mill would massively reduce tooling and production costs and allow for larger production runs, which in turn reduces costs even more.
      Accucraft (EDIT: Actually Maxitrak) actually has a 2-4-0 for $18,000 that I have to confess I almost forgot about, simply because no one in the hobby seems to even acknowledge its existence. It would be nice if they had something a little smaller than that for a little less than that, though. I could see Accucraft managing a 7.5" gauge scaled up Ruby 0-4-0T running on the same basic running gear for around $12,000 to $15,000 depending on tooling costs.
      As for the electric recommendation, noted, but that's like telling someone to not even bother taking a step past their LGB starter set if they can't buy the latest big main-line live steamer. Only difference is that G-scale has the Accucraft Ruby as a middle step to learn on. 7.5" gauge doesn't.

      @TheSteamChannel  5 лет назад

      frederic rike there has actually been plenty of updates on the 844 through Facebook, Instagram, the main website, and photos in the community tab of this channel. Some of the behind the scenes posts in the community area are for channel members. I’m waiting on the spring rigging/brake bracket footage from Gemini so I can film the next installment, and they have just received the castings for the next three phases of the build (trailing truck, pilot truck, and cylinder section). The spring rigging video should be published in Oct and the trailing truck should be completed by Jan.
