    I loved steam engines ever since I saw one up close in 1957 in New York City when I was three years old. Even at that age, the memory in ingrained in my head. Never seen anything like this. I'm more impressed that a toy train can pull so much weight, it must be a super solid build. How many horse power does the steam engine produce?

    • @bpark10001
      @bpark10001 6 лет назад +3

      An engine like this can make a few horsepower, and with tender weighs 600 pounds. Somewhat larger ones can make 8 horsepower when running fast.

    • @bpark10001
      @bpark10001 6 лет назад +1

      This is not your usual "toy"! The engine alone weighs on the order of 500 lbs! It can put out on the order of a couple of horsepower when going fast. It has a voracious appetite for fuel air, and water. Did you note the jerk and the interruption at 11:20? Engine hit a rock and derailed. I will be willing to bet that some crowbars and the like were used to get it back on during the interruption!

    • @TheSteamChannel
      @TheSteamChannel  6 лет назад +7

      It was actually the tender that derailed. No crowbars are necessary for this locomotive as it is still light enough to re-rail by hand. A larger engine, like the 4120- the 4-8-4 we used in the other how-to- would require a steel bar, some blocks, and perhaps some steel plate to slide the wheels over on.

    • @KandiKlover
      @KandiKlover 5 лет назад +2

      I would like a 4-8-8-4 in that gauge.

    • @WheelsRCool
      @WheelsRCool 5 лет назад +1

      These aren't really "toys," they're literally scaled-down versions of the real thing. They have to be built to specific standards, especially the boiler, otherwise it could blow or spring a leak of superheated steam.

  • @MrGoosePit
    @MrGoosePit 8 лет назад +1

    There's a lot more to it than I thought. I wonder how you first learned how to operate a locomotive like that with out somebody sitting at your side to tell you what to do, or how to react to various situations as they occur. Very cool production. I like all the camera angles and clarity. One of my favorite videos I've seen here. Thanks for making it!

    • @IllinoisTrains1
      @IllinoisTrains1 8 лет назад +3

      Every person does it a little differently. Some larger locomotives have tenders that are big enough for 2 people. In that case the instructor sits behind the student and advises them as they go along. Smaller locomotives require a different approach. Either the instructor can walk along the student and give advice or then can ride in a car behind. Personally I walk along the student until I feel the can operate the locomotive adequately. This means managing speed with throttle and brake, plus keeping the water level in check. Then I ride behind for short trips and begin to teach firing the locomotive. Once they have that down, they can go out on there own. Of course I'm no master either and I'm still learning the little idiosyncrasies of locomotive operation, but I'm proficient enough to run successfully by myself for hours at a time.

    Yo Blake how easily would the skills you have picked up on these miniature locomotives transfer to a full size locomotive??

    • @harpinbrad
      @harpinbrad 5 лет назад

      Daniel Sapsford Lewis the controls are the same. From what ive been told the smaller the engine the harder it is because the fire is smaller and harder to keep going, also less steam to use. Everytime you put coal on or put water in it can drop the prrssure. I have a 5” gauge simplex loco, but they go smaller still!

    • @TheSteamChannel
      @TheSteamChannel  5 лет назад +5

      Keeping the fire going is easy enough even with a smaller class engine. What is much more tricky as you go down in size from say a 4-8-4 to a 2-6-0 is maintaining the boiler pressure during operation and use of the injectors. That takes practice. In 7.5” gauge, using the injector to pump in cold water will drop the pressure in a hurry.

      Steam locomotives are consigned to using air brakes to regulate downhill speed. Open the throttle just enough to let some steam into the cylinders for lubrication.

    That honestly looks like so much fun! I would definitely be very happy if given a chance to learn how to operate a steam locomotive
