I've actually found good reason for this motherboard and I'm glad I found this video because I've been looking for a small motherboard that could fit in my play station for PC case mod. The only other small motherboards were the smallest of mini itx motherboards that used a laptop charger as a power supply and even those small ones would be borderline fit like a glove type situation that would obviously have Heat issues. So with this NUC motherboard I might even be able to do my little project with the "PlayStation One" Instead of the larger "Play Station".

I picked up a celron nuc for about $140. I had ram and a 2.5 inch drive lying around so it was a good deal. Installing windows 10 on it. I've noticed there is an enourmous premium on power in these little boxes. The lowest end ones are the only ones that are reasonably priced.

I'd be for building your own NUC if you had many configuration options, but I don't see a big advantage over a standard Intel NUC, which lets you choose your own memory and hard drive.

about the price of building your own NUC, the cost of motherboard is higher than what you would think, simply because there are not big market for buyers who want to purchase the raw motherboard and DIY their own NUC. It costs less for Intel to manufacture the NUC and sell it on the proper market. To me, the Intel NUC box has given a very good deal in terms of the performance and price.
I wanted to buy a smaller components to build my own mini pc - that was my original plan before I got the NUC PC. But there was no easy market for me to get what I want for building a mini pc close to NUC. Without demand, I don't see any reason why Intel wants to release the market for NUC motherboard. There are not many buyers in this market. Regular users will prefer to purchase the pre-built mini pc which is exactly what NUC is targeting on.

1: Not custom. Motherboard is supplies by intel to different vendors.
2: You need to get a very high end motherboard to get Thunderbolt 3. As far as i know, this is one of the only ones. Only a single PCIE 3.0 slot, but it fits everything else you need. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813132638

so... you prefer a bare motherboard, and remove the fan and heatsink, to then put it into a case that acts as a heatsink but still uses a fan *smh*
i can understand going for the completely fanless custom cases, but opting for alternative cases that have no added value and actually fewer features just so you can say you built your own is just pointless.

190 dollars seriously. i do want to build it but all i see is just you add the motherboard in. so i don't think it matters than. the intel nuc is 200. the case is 40 abed the motherboard is a whooping 130 bucks. thats the base with an atom. so it is not exactly supposed to be that intel nuc with an i3. an i3 is 280.
conclusion. 320 BUCKS. SERIOUSLY. AN i3 is LIKE 200

Intel really needs to get their shit together with these. They are such a great concept, but with all of the money you have to dump into the damn thing, they should be at least a little bit cheaper. I'd much rather use older parts that I have lying around to make an HTPC. In terms of using as a Steambox, I'd just save the money and get a Steam Link for $50, and host from your gaming rig, over your home network.
