Thanks for the tutorial. I really want to try live composite with my new E-M5 mark III. By the way, for E-M5 mark III users, the live composite mode is found under the "B" (bulb) dial setting, not "M".
Thank you Peter. There is so much to learn about photography nowadays. I started with Canon gear in 2012, and that was easy compared to all the things you can do with new cameras like Olympus. I'm getting old, and learning a new thing everyday helps me to keep my mind active. Thank you for your videos. I learn something every time.
Hi Peter. Just a side note: When you press shutter button for the first time, camera is not doing calculations. Is actually recording a black image at the same shutter speed. This black image that will be used at the end of process for noise reduction. Thank you for your videos.
Another great tutorial. Thanks Peter. Any chance you can do a video on shooting the moon , like in a moonrise landscape or seascape. What settings to use etc . Cheers Brian from Australia.
Thanks for another great tutorial. When setting up Livecomp on my old EM1 MK2 the screen on my camera becomes very dim & I find it difficult to read in poor light. This happens only when I use Livecomp.
It is possible to adjust the brightness. Go to Live View Boost and set Live Composite to On2. It will show the image brighter, but it won't affect the exposure.
Hi there! I use OM-D EM-1 with the 12-40mm f2.8 pro.. Image is being sent right now.. LiveComp may be the reason I will not switch to Sony... It is that great tool for me.
Live Comp is a nice feature. But, Peter, it’s a small logical cap in your presentation. How to find that Live Com setting? Rob Trek’s guidance makes that point clear. Some of us are real novices! But everything what you are telling in ok. Thanks for your videos. They are very useful.
It depends on what camera you have. Older models it can be found in manual mode as one of the "shutter speeds". On newer models it can be found from the Mode Dial when you choose B from it.
Great functionality, but I'm not so happy on the following formulation on the configuration screen: "Exposure time per image" should read "Exposure time for the reference image". Or do I misunderstand?
Ok, I thought the capture after the first image was done on a continuous basis. But what if you choose for instance 60 sec and for the 2nd image, you stop after 30 sec. Will the camera stop the capture immediately, or wait until 60 sec is reached?
Is there a way to turn off the noise reduction inside of live comp ???? My noise reduction is off , i used live comp to do fireworks- works great - except the noise reduction after live comp slows down shooting of more fireworks !!! And yes my canera - OM-1 , is up to date on firmware . THX FOR ANY IDEAS , SUGGESTIONS…. ETC . This noise reduction after each live composite has baffled me - i cannot seem to turn it off … IS THIS NORMAL ???? Thx
I don't get it. I read that the shutter speed tells the camera how fast the LCD refreshes and shows the image. But, I thought the shutter speed controls the exposure of the base photo. My image did not build and did not turn out right.
What camera body you have. You set the camera to LiveComp and then form the menu you choose the shutter speed. You choose a shutter speed that gives you the correct exposure. You need to press the shutter button twice, the first one makes the camera do some calculations and the second one starts the exposure. What went wrong with the image?
@@ForsgardPeter M1 Mk III. Thank you Peter for responding. I don't know what I did wrong, but what I got was when I set up was a Time exposure, said Time on the LCD. I remember going into the Menu to set up Live Comp, but always ended up with Time (not sure if it was Live Time because the LCD never showed up. Eventually, I went back to the Dial, set it back to M, then back to B, then to Live Comp, and finally it did work. I don't know why Live Comp didn't stick. Then, I tried to turn it off in the Menu and couldn't find that, so I backed out by changing the dial to M for my normal shooting. Will have to try again to refine the process and ambient settings. Thanks.
I'm confused about live time and composite modes. Using the OM-m1 mark lll in manual I can't see how to set up for stars for instance. How do I set up Live Composite and Live Composite timer? How to avoid camera shake when releasing the shutter? In the god old days we were using a cable release!
If you dont' want to use the Olympus App you can use, on the olympus cameras which are accepting a "wired remote switch" (OM-D em1 Mark 3 is OK but not EPl-x and there is good and chip one able to replace the original OLY-RM-CB2 one. the brand name is JJC and called MA Series and available on Amazon
I need your advice am trying to use live composite in my Olympus em1 mark iii but not active why? although i can reach it from menu but not active when shopping any clue?
You need to set the mode dial to B. Choose Live Comp. from there. It does not matter what shutter speed you have on M. The shutter speed is set from the menu. When you have Live Comp. on, press the menu button. It will take straight to set the shutter speed. It is a bit awkward way to set the shutter speed.
@@ForsgardPeter Thanks so much for the advice now i can see something but next to B is live time is this same as live composite? very kind of you Peter
You can use it with out the Remote Shutter, but of course as with all the long exposure photography it is a good option. I hav ehad the IBIS on, but with long exposure photography it might be a good thing to turn it off.
It all depends on the brightness of the scene. The same logic that applies to normal photos and exposure applies to LiveComp. Measure the exposure with your cameras Light Meter and set those values when making Live Composite images.
Sorry about that. It is the last "exposure" value on M. This depends on the camera. At the time made that video there was only one way n Olympus cameras. In some cameras it can be accessed from B-mode and in some it is on AP.
I wish Olympus used real photographers who have skills to show the features of the camera. So far nothing impressive... Sorry... I am an amateur and I have way more ideas how I can utilize this feature for some stunning photos and not some local fair crap... Not that it's only Olympus that is doing it. Most camera reviews these days come from "reviewers" who are not that great at taking photos.
First images for the feed back have been send. Great! Keep them images coming!

Yes Olympus have changed the way to turn on the Live Composite in their newer cameras.

I could, but it is usually quite cloudy during winter in Finland. That subject is in my list to do videos.

That would be a very interesting thing. I will see what I can do about it.
What is the least expensive Olympus model to purchase in order to do live composite images?
Olympus E-M10 Mark II of E-M1 (if I remember correctly it got it via firmware).

On my OM5, seemsm the camera needs to be in "Bulb" mode for live composite to work
Yes. On OM-5 and on some other newer models it is slightly different than it used to be when this video was published. Everything else still holds.
Great functionality, but I'm not so happy on the following formulation on the configuration screen: "Exposure time per image" should read "Exposure time for the reference image". Or do I misunderstand?
It has the same length. The camera takes consecutive images in a row and stacks them in camera to make one image.
Ok, I thought the capture after the first image was done on a continuous basis. But what if you choose for instance 60 sec and for the 2nd image, you stop after 30 sec. Will the camera stop the capture immediately, or wait until 60 sec is reached?
The camera will go on as long as there is power in the battery unless you stop it. It stacks the images.

You might have some other features on. Check that you do not have HDR on for example.

Yes you do. So you have a full potential to do manipulating in post if you wish..
Thanks, Peter.
On my OM1 iii, I see live composite but it grayed out. Is it lense dependent or is there another variable preventing selection?
Most likely some other feature is on. Very hard to say what it is.
Hi, i have a omd 10 mark iii and have a question. If we use the live comp can we manage the delay of shutter?
No you cannot. To avoid the camera shake you can use OI.Share app as a remote control to trigger the shutter.
When I try this, the image is not shown on the LCD monitor as it progresses. What setting controls this? M1-X
and also not in EVF? Really hard to say what the problem is.
@@ForsgardPeter I almost never use Live View. Didn't even realize you had to turn it on with button :-) Reading manual helps. Thanks
I struggle to understand how to get the base exposure correct.
Just use the same exposure you would normally do. Use the light meter in M mode for example and check the exposure.
