Dhoni might have the stats, Virat may have even better stats, but if I was asked to pick a Captain, it'll always be Sourav Ganguly!! Captained the team in most difficult times, sacrificed his batting position for improving other player's game, stuck by his player's side forever.
The Australia under Pointing was considered Invincible.. But the team India under Dada will always be on the top of my list..

Ganguly was not just a captain. He was a leader.
He was a fighter...Everybody cornered him after 2006 ..Not even his truest fans expected he will make a comeback not because he couldn't but because every person in the bcci rejected him...It was a surprise that he made a comeback. And proved what he was..At the age of 33-34 chances of making comebacks are rare..But he was at his best during the period ...He retired on his own terms when the bcci again planing to axe him ..They never liked him simply because he never followed the seat warmers like them,Nd did what he felt. Otherwise he had a lot more cricket left in him..Even today it's hard to find a proper replacement for him in tests...And it's been almost 10 yrs now..

Its amazing to see how much ex cricketers/pundits/journalists/commentators praise Ganguly now and recognise his contribution to Indian cricket. But I remember the amount of criticism he used to get when he was playing, especially from journalists (India and abroad). The amount of garbage that they wrote about Ganguly was unfathomable. Indian journalists/ex-cricketers were ready to pounce on him on every little thing and criticise him-- may it be slow overrate, waving his shirt at Lords, the way he made Steve Waugh stand during the toss etc etc. Everything then was about "the spirit of the game". Now these things have become tactical mind-games. Well, where was this attitude when your Indian captain needed your support!! Effing leaches these guys.
Dada is greatest ever Indian captain only because he took over the captaincy when Indian Cricket was shattering on the bottom(due to Match fixing saga) and then he brought back loyalty in the game and took Indian cricket to a new high which continues to grow with Dravid/Kumble/Dhoni/Kohli as captain!!
scoring runs against murali,brett lee,saqlain,wasim,vaas,shoaib,allan donald,daniel vettori,shaun pollock,ntini,warne ,macgrat,gillespie etc and hitting sixes nearly to god of cricket who played 100 more matches than himself....u cannot wonder his attack playing compared to current players who are bullies aided by bended rules,lack of world class bowlers,flat track pitches...he danced down the pitch struck the ball like hitting a high musical note in a opera........

I was started seeing cricket becuase of him. 3 sixes out of pavilion vs Zimbabwe. 183 vs srilanka, 153 vs nz. 141 vs pak unforgettable.
That 153 vs NZ was one of the best knocks Dada ever played. I still remember the six of that yorker from Chris Cairns.

I literally have no words to Express... many say dhoni is a great captain..agree but sourav is the greatest after kapil dev... waving his shirt off in the lord's balcony, the 144 against Australia, the 57 against south Africa after his come back ,the double century against Pakistan... the straight six of Chris board in 2007 ..I wish he had won the 2003 WC or led India in 2011.. legendary stuff..
Cricket in India was just like any other game in the country. It lost it's credibility in the match fixing scandal. Then Dada was apponted as the captain. And the team under Dada brought the faith and the crowd back into the game and made Cricket a religion in India. Thank you Dada.

Yuvraj, dhoni, zaheer, harbhajan, sehwag, nehra. All these guys were instrumental in WC 2011 win and it was dada who nurtured them to become the players they were by 2011. So, in a way, dada deserves a large chunk of the applause of our world cup win.
