Who’s ready for a Golf R v Cupra Leon hot hatch drag race?!
Although they may have different names, these two cars share a whole load of features once you peer under the skin, so we’re putting them head-to-head over the 1/4 mile to see just how much performance difference they offer!
Starting with the Cupra, it’s powered by a 2-litre 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 300hp & 400Nm. It drives the front wheels only, weighs in at 1,395kg, and has a starting price of around £35,000.
As for the Golf R, well it’s powered by the same engine, but it has an output of 320hp & 420Nm of torque! It’s heavier than the Cupra, however, at 1,550kg, and it also comes with a heftier starting price of £40,000.
It’s got one key difference over the Leon, however - it comes equipped with all-wheel drive! Will that prove to be the difference? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Finally a classic carwow. Cars in same power level, race start less than 3 minutes in. Like the good old days. Not now when we have to wait 3 hours for the race just to see a 1000hp car smokes a 400hp car.

I personally find the Cupra Leon to be a very attractive looking hatchback.
It'd be interesting to see the estate version of the Cupra face off against the Golf R, since that gets 10 extra HP and AWD, but has the added weight of being an estate.
It is an open secret that the VW R makes more than 320 PS ……

The rolling race in 3rd was interesting as it looks like VW has addressed the previous gen whispers that the Cupra 290/300 was quicker than the R once rolling. I suspect even Matt was expecting a similar outcome. There's no denying that the MK 8 R is a very quick car 👍

As well as the 4wd, it's been proven by a few people now that a stock mk8 Golf R actually makes 340bhp, so no surprise that it wipes the floor with the Leon in both the standing and rolling races
