I own a GTD, I test drove a Golf R today. I hated the drone from the DSG, the piano black inserts get easily scratched, the suede inserts on the seats get grubby, the wheel gets slick/smooth with wear - the interior of the GTD is FAR nicer. This has led me to look at manual Leon 300's. I like the look of the angled dash that looks much easier to use, the exhausts look better to me too. Now I just need to test drive one !!
Nice car, but I don't see the point in having all that power that you cant put down. I hate that front wheel drive scrabbling for grip, at least with rear wheel drive you can have some fun with "excess" power. But I'd go for the Golf R every time over that.
I simply just LOVE the Cupra! back in 2009 i was the lucky owner of a Leon 1P Cupra, which was an amazing model at that time, now i own a Leon 5F FR 1.8 tsi also with DSG, wonderful car, but not even close to the 5f Cupra 300

I recently put Good Year Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 tyres on mine and it grips so much better now, I don't think I've noticed the traction light since, really good tyres!
@@JohnSmith-ws1dp I’ve driven them both and can tell you Cupra has pretty much the same interior. Most of the parts literally come from the same factory.
I'm on my second, love it but must admit the 300 is a much better car overall than the newer 290 with all the GPF gubbins. Much overlooked cars, and I always felt like its more characterful to drive , although a little less useful as a daily than the Golf R's I've driven. These also come with way more as standard than the audi/vw (alcantara, DCC suspension, 19" alloys) which represents good value. I've worked with SEAT media UK recently and reviewed the new 2022 mk4 version of this, and found the power delivery and wheel hop to be much better, and the steering to be much more dialed in than in these mk3.5 models.

4wd is better than any fwd in every single situation.. do you realize that the s3 and golf r are fwd until it slips and then the rear wheels kick in..its a different quattro system to the a4 a6 a8 and all the rest of them..its a haldex.
@@mattyburrows9059 understeer to hell
@@redryanswheels7419 all audis understeer.but fwd ones do it alot worse.or are you talking fwd cars in general..dont get me wrong the audi quatrro aint no mitishbushi or porsche 4wd system..the quattro looks rather poo when you compare it to them but i still dont get why you would have a fwd when you can have 4wd for a similar price
I hope it's not VAG's Focus lol Ford are Shit.
@@peteramos6081 do you think VW of today is better than Ford?!
I completely agree. Cupra's are one seriously cool car. I've been owning them since 2004 and my current Cupra is my 8th one!
How random Calvin I was literally just looking at these at comparing them to Golf Rs!
Great video thank you!
Perfect! 👌
Banging cars to be fair. Mines running 537hp and does 100-200kmh in 6.60 seconds with a manual transmission.
Very under rated cars which can destroy most things on the road
Must be that exhaust 😉
@@nathanxsport could be, 😏😏😏😏
Got a 290 in July absolutely love it. Looking to get a dogbount mount insert installed soon and should eliminate 90% of the wheel hop
What ever happened to Yours/Arthur’s Golf R that was crashed and then you bought back?
It’s still at the Bodyshop mate
I picked one up from a customer once and was actually surprised when I put my foot down. Actually took me by surprise.
Same for me. Quality car 👌
Picked up one of these back in August. Smashing car, VERY underestimated and not in the limelight.
Always imagined these would feel quicker than the golf r once rolling as less drivetrain loss of power to the road, a friend once had a cupra (generation before) when they first came out 343bhp and it blew me away how quick it was, very underrated cars.
343 from a last gen cupra. That’s defo not stock.
@@TheYBGOON not stock it was modified but not alot was done to get to that power.
Think you forgot to add Seat Cupra comes with DCC suspension as standard, I think this is something around £2k option on golf...
Please turn that switch away from heated mirrors before the glue heats up and your mirror glass falls off 😬 👍🏼
That only happens on the GTi
@@level5822 Oh no it doesn’t
This happend to me 2 weeks after getting my r 🤣🤣
Ran mine for 4 years no issue
I've left mine on heated for a good year and a half non stop with no problems?
I recently put Good Year Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 tyres on mine and it grips so much better now, I don't think I've noticed the traction light since, really good tyres!
I have the cupra st (estate) 300 also a fantastic car and has the 4wd and arguably better looking than the golf r estate
Cupras are awesome cars. Ive got a mk2 Cupra almost ready for stage 2 plus. Going to go big turbo in the new year.
I have a 2023 cupra Leon, love it love it love it, such an underrated underdog car
Most of these cupras were leased cus they had really good lease deals on them at the time. My mate had one. Fast as f*ck a s not as stolen
I’ve currently got a 290, brilliant car 👌
Me too, got the 2020 version and i absolutely love it🤩
My Seat Arona FR sport has the virtual cockpit but only has a 1.0 tsi engine but Im happy with it and did look at the Leon Cupra in the showroom :)
Been driving Cupras since 2010, just got the new model and loving it! Bacially you’re paying Kia Ceed money to drive a Audi S3. What’s not to like?
Faaaar from an s3 i tell you that. nowhere near as refined and the quality is pants
@@JohnSmith-ws1dp I’ve driven them both and can tell you Cupra has pretty much the same interior. Most of the parts literally come from the same factory.
@@JohnSmith-ws1dp the quality in the new s3 and golf r is shite for the price. Rather have the cupra
Did your 300 have a 6 or 7 speed dsg? If you could give a comparison that be interesting. Feel like I’m trading no gbf vs more modern, lower rpms on motorway.
Why less useful as a daily? Gets better mpg because no awd
@@Jonsk111 because if you stamp on it in most conditions they don’t grip. And they’re absolutely rubbish in show and ice. For most people this won’t matter - but for some it can make it a better daily driver. Can’t say I’ve noticed much real world MPG difference. I have a Quattro audi now with the same engine!
@@ItsDanLatham I live in finland so I can safely say I know what winter is.. I have mainly driven fwd cars without any issues. We just use proper winter tyres 😅
@@Jonsk111 This is the problem in the UK - we only have about a week of snow so nobody buys winter tyres. So AWD owners are the ones that can make it out whilst FWD owners are stuck! I mostly like the AWD for the easy power delivery.
Way more fun to drive and more engaging than S3/R
Had an FR before buying a Cupra 300 and I am in love with it!
Stunning looking car. And coming from a golf fan.
the leon is basicly a cheaper golf with diffrent badges and sportier looks yet alone more tech
It is a Golf mate. Not exactly surprising you like it.

Hi Calvin. Are the vw polo gti + a solid reliable bombproof car? Does solid red paint cars fade and peel over time? Plz shave mate, you look ten years older with the beard!!!
you should try the estate 300, it has 4wheel drive :)
Had a 290 black for 3 years now still love it
Had one for 2 years and done 40k in it, best car I've had to date. Easily get 40 mpg... could get 45 with a little care on a long drive.
Are these mpg figures with the 6 speed dsg or the 7 speed dsg?
@@Thomasmoney96 with the 7 speed dsg.
@@jamesWilliams-pg4ye that's helpful to know, thank you! Do you find that the GPF affects the exhaust sound very much?

mate just got a fabia vrs 1.4 vrs mk2 petrol put a full stainless steel exhaust system plus Power flow air filter... More to do next year... you need to get one of these on your channel
Cockpit and the 8" Mib2 head Unit were retrofitted, 67 few years out for those mods
VAG have done some job with Seat and Skoda range, all cars you want to own.
The Cupra will also have a front E diff (Haldex) and probably the adaptive 3 way electric suspension. 360 lbft @ 2800 through front wheels is always going to be a difficult relationship but Michelin PS 4S tyres seem to be the better option to limit the squirreliness
The cupra 3/5 door Versions have a lsd actually the estate Version has a haldex
@@h4ckantrieb950 estate 280/290 versions have also e-LSD.
The best one is the estate version with AWD.
Like the Cupra, but with that stage 1 tune, it looked too much for that front wheel drive chassis assuming the tyres weren't shot. That would drive me nuts......
Better tyres and the dog bone sorted on it and it will put the power down for sure
I've got a stage 1 cupra 300 with 370bhp, fitted a dogbone mount, decent tyres and actually controlling the throttle there is no issues whatsoever tbh. Mugs off a lot of cars on the road that don't expect it😂
Forgot about the Golf GTI TCR Calv?
Just got myself a 1.4 Leon FR...not Cupra levels but was what I could get in my budget. Who knows, Cupra next..
Inside it doesn't feel the best, but for price comparison against its rivals, definitely worth it.
I have had and 1.4 FR (150) ACT Estate for 2 years now and it's a brilliant car. Obviously not Cupra levels like you say but goes well enough and does 50MPG without really trying.
Congratulations on the marriage Calvin.. been watching you since lock down...top bloke..wishing you all the best..👌
Had the 300 myself, great car!
Loving the videos as always my man!
Would be interested to see what tyres this thing is running up front- PS4's are a popular 'mod' and do seem to give a lot more grip from the standard's from factory. The dogbone mount helps alot as well
Why are ps4's rated so much? My stage 1 cr170 2 0tdi spins in second gear with the ps4 tyres but with landsail 588 tyres it dont? 😔😅
@@leet7031 Absolutely no idea matey - sorry! My guess would be a potential difference in tyre pressures?

@@leet7031 I can only speak from my experience. With Pirelli p6000's - wheel bounce. With dog bone upgrade - less wheel bounce. With dog bone upgrade and Ps4 - no wheel bounce, unless it's wet. Massive massive upgrade the Ps4's and I thought it was just fan boy forum sh*t!
You need to compare the GTI clubsport. Same power and FWD
I’ve had 2 SEAT’s in the past 4 yrs or so. Not so keen on the new shape Leon but I rate the brand.
Very underrated car handle fantastic with Ps4s on
Offers something different to the S3 and R - wheelspin
Estate is 4wd if you want a better one.
Cupra’s are considerably cheaper on insurance for me as a young driver too compared to m140i’s and Golf R’s etc
really? i had a Golf R and i paid less insurance for it than for a FWD Cupra 290ST, bcoz a 4WD car is less likely to crash...
Cupra's are great and less common than the S3 and Golf R. I've got a MK1 Cupra R 225 and its brilliant. Starting to get rare on the roads now as well.
Great looking cars, you can the the estate (ST) with 4 drive.... that is a good value car!
Just came across your channel. Really like your car insights, tests and background knowledge. Looking forward to binge-watching your previous episodes and all your future ones too!
The power upgrade will cost a ton of money in tyres over a period. The way that put it's power down.
Hello Calvin where’s your blue golf r the one u got off aurther we need content off it
It’s still at the body shop mate. Sounds like they’re almost done with it. I’ll get a video up as soon it’s repaired.
I want to hpi check my car but I really don’t want to incase I see it’s got something outstanding or written off🥲
I got a 69 plate 290, ECU tune will give it same power as this, but being a GPF car I can't go any higher than OEM+ from racingline. But its more than enough for a FWD car.
Wish I got one with heated seats... lol
Just popped on to see when are you doing a e46 video been ages waiting
Great video, I have a mk2 leon cupra K1, love it and I'm looking at a mk3 cupra to buy. , Seat Leon mk3 cupra i feel are not as popular as a golf R, which I like the less popular as golf's are more common.. but hey that's my opinion.. Great review 👍
Some people get them retrofitted, not always standard
Hello Calvin, could you do a video on cars that are CAT cars and what to look out for on them and if you should be put off buying them please? Thanks
I have a 2019 290 Lux, great looking car, great value. Looks way better than Golf R IMO, and comparable with S3. Mines stock and I need to sort the dog bone mount out to stop the hopping although recent tyre upgrade really helped 👍🏻
Great vid! keep it up man! Any suggestions to any specs to put on a BMW 118d series?
Looks great and goes well but maybe a bit too much power for a FWD car, that is why the Golf R is another £5 for the 4WD not to sure I would pay that though.
Go for Cupra estate, 4drive as standard and still cheaper than a golf R
I've only driven a fr diesel doesn't compare but even that drives brilliantly
I bought a Scirocco R for value & FWD, I reckon it’s more fun than the AWD Competitors.

The older Cupra R Seats had a bit of character with those 20 valve engines and curvy styling but imo the modern ones are dull as dishwater. Just too bland now.
is that not the same story with every modern car? they might drive well, and have decent tech, but i think cars have lost their character in recent years.
More fun whipping Porsches when it's stage 3
Traction is terrible in a fwd Curpra coming into winter. Summer time is a different story. I bought a 290 pre-face lift estate, brand new in 2016. Been a faultless, reliable family car, with a surprising amount of boot space and the ability to cover lots of ground very fast in relative comfort. Mine stays in comfort mode all the time.
Do you not put the car into Cupra mode at all? Agree with most of what you have said but surely you must flip the switch for a bit fun 🤷♂️
@@neilooo1998 I keep it in dynamic where I selected everything how I like and I omit the terrible artificial sound that comes through the sound system in cupra mode. Needs a dog one mount and decent tyres and then it would out traction down much better, these cupras are so underrated I would take one over a golf r any day and that’s coming from a stage 3 s3 8v owner
New Octy VRS petrol 1st stage tune an alternative with space. Family friendly and as much pace as the Seat. Prob less sporty due to size
I have the newer 290 Cupra, stage 2 REVO and they are really fun to drive quickly. Traction will always be an issue in the UK regardless of tyres though. PS4s on mine and wheelspins for fun 🥴
