I love watching you sew. When i make coasters i put a lsyer of vinyl inside. Here in Ohio our humidity csuses glasses with ice in them to sweat. The vinyl keeps the moisture from going through. I usually use old table clothes for this.

What type of batting should we use

I would highly suggest something cotton so that it doesn't melt.

No backstitching needed?

Not if you will overlap stitches later in sewing. That will act as a backstitch.

Your half square triangle block is not 5.25" after it is sewn, it should be 4.5".
