Excellent Advice. I've had transmission issues for years. Recently, my local mechanic told me the PCM is shot. Most recently the engine was running really rough and the transmission kicked frequently. Replacing the ignition coils fixed all these issues. My engine and transmission are running smoothly now.

Was getting a TP sensor error, Communication Bus Fault, Pump motor circuit failure, steering wheel angle sensor failure. Wrench light, check engine light. Funny thing is, It never produced a misfire code. It was shifting hard into second gear. I changed all the plugs and coils. Runs like new now. Thank you for the video, it saved me a lot of $. Your're a top notch mechanic in my view.

Ha! I just went thru the same exact thing! Ordered coils from Amazon and replaced one bad coil and the engine ran fine. Decided a week later to replace the other 7. IMMEDIATELY faced the check engine, wrench and traction control lights with tranny slamming in and out of gear especially while stopped. Time ti get better coil packs. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom!

This video really help out. I was working on a 07 explorer 4.6l. Its my brothers father in law. He took it to three different mechanics. One of them opened the transmission and they told him he had to change the TCM. and The mechanic told him to put the tranny down he charge $$$$$5000. and he said it was a lot of money but good thing he didnt do. Finally, they could not figure anything, they told him to take it to the diler he didnt take it . and he already wanted to sell it because they did not find the problem. the first day that I went to look at it i scaned and gave me codes of the coil 2 and the trottle body posision sensor and it was running like on 3rd so slow to pick up it wasnt shiften. Im glad that i watched this video which I had doubts about this. but decided to change all the coils and incredible is well without problems running good .

2006 mercury mountaineer fixed after experiencing EXACT symptoms. Originally changed misfiring coil packs with DURALAST brand (junk) approx 6 months prior to onset of shifting problems and random codes. Immediately after watching this video changed coil packs back to new OEM coil packs and completely remedied all shifting and computer problems. 🤟🏼 HUGE help. Thx.

You just saved my cheap, shade tree mechanic, ass... Again. Had the CEL, Code U0101 and clunking into reverse. Figured this 15 year old beast was through. Just not worth putting much more money into it. After watching your video, I figured I'd swap some coils in from my garage queen Town Car, but they aren't the same. So, I swapped coils from one side to the other. Cleared code and problem is gone. Ordered another set from Amazon to replace the cheap ones ordered from there in 2018. God bless you!

Thank you so much for the info. I just replaced the VCT solenoid on bank 1 along with a leaking radiator. Started having this same trans problem. Thought maybe I lost too much trans fluid. It only took 1/4 of a quart. Still had trans problem. Until I looked this up on your site. Replaced all 8 coils which were Motorcraft. Problem solved. Keep up the great work.

This summer i had this problem...
Tracs light on...ABS light on...into safe mode...U1900 ABS CODE.
I do not know if the PCM U0101 CODE was set because i only checked codes AFTER shutting down. So after changing MAF sensor did not help at all...i changed 4 coils with Accels ( on passengerside only) and also changed all plugs with Motorcraft. Have NOT had this trouble return even once in the 6 mo. since. The pass.side coils were absolutely the problem. Owning a Ford is never boring...or sensical.

The CEL came on after a little while and gave codes PO306 and P0101' changed the coil on cylinder 6, everything was back to normal, thanks !

Thanks for the help, saved me from accidentally quoting out a $1200 tcm/valve body assy to the customer. Glad i looked online cuz what i found odd was that the tcm wud only fail the network test with KOER, but passes the test when its in KOEO. U would never think to check for coils pulling down the network under normal diag circumstances. 07sport trac had aftermarket coil on bank 2 cyl#8 tat wud intermittently misfire. Confirmed the issue by swapping it out with a oem coil from a mustang i was also working on. Sure enough the issue was gone when i roadtested the vehicle.

Great troubleshooting! Here's one to share: I had a 2010 that seemed to be slipping or failing to upshift out of 2nd or third gear when hot. The coolant was low, forcing the electric fan clutch to remain engaged. The over-revving fan felt and sounded like a transmission problem.
The leak was at the rear of the truck where the hoses enter the rear heater.

Thank you so much. I put some aluminum foil around that wiring harness and it is shifting normal again. My transmission guy was pretty sure the transmission needed rebuilt and I was close to replacing all of the solenoids to see if that would fix it so you saved me a lot of money. I replaced the coil packs less than a year ago with Mallory ones and did not want to do it again so I tried the foil.

Great, informative information here. On my 2009 Explorer Sport 4.6, a faulty battery was causing the voltage to drop so much during starting, that it would confuse the electronics and cause the dreaded Orange Wrench of Death. Transmission would stay in 3rd gear only. Amazing that a battery would cause the symptoms of a transmission failure. Needless to say, I am NOT a fan of all these electronics on newer vehicles.

Installed 4 new coils on that side, everything back to perfect normal. My 2006 is burgundy just like in the video - common thread?

It may be coincidence, but I changed my cylinder head temp. sensor on my '02 5.4 twice after getting false p1299 codes and limp mode that could be reset with a key cycle.
Would start and run fine from cold, but if I stopped for a short time, like to get gas or food, at start up of a warm engine I'd get engine light and pegged water temp needle. Turn off - pull out the key - wait a few seconds and start again and the temp gauge would go to normal and no more limp mode.
Finally got the p0305 misfire on the #5 cylinder (closest to temp sensor/harness) Bought a new Motorcraft coil pack.
It's been a couple months and no more p1299.

One thing and I don’t know if Fords will have this problem. My granddaughter had almost the same symptoms on a Dodge Stratus. I did some research and found a flakey alternator could cause this. She took her car to her trusted shop and they finally sent it to another shop. When it was fixed after 2 weeks, I asked her what was wrong. She said they replaced the alternator. Something about noise on the pcm data buss.

hello, please do you have any idea about ford explorer 2013 climate control setting?, I have one ford explorer 2013 that I am restoring it AC system for a customer, it has shuts two compressor before it was brought to my garage, I have fix the issues its working now but I have some the compressor temperature going 150 df on a day when the outside temp is about 43, I later heard noise on the bearing although its not a new compressor it's used one, that has leaks at the shaft seal,
1, my question is, is 150 df temperature of the AC compressor unusual or normal?
2, second question, whats the difference between the front and rear expansion valve of ford explorer 2013 model, I tore both apart and it doesn't seem to have any difference,
3, how do we know counterfeit spare parts from genuine one from motorcraft?

I had my right side exhaust manifold changed and the mech welded a nut to the exhaust bolt.
I believe the ground was too far from the work or he sparked to the frame as most welders do and shorted out 4 ignition cois fuel pressure sensor abs sensor and cruise sensor.
Beware welding. Not only disconnect the neg post but also the ecm plugs coils fuel injectors and every 5v sensor you can see.
Of course he tells me that he didnt do it. But all these codes show up at once the day after i got the car back.
Also if the ignition coils are not clipped or the hold down bolt is stripped and shaking the coils the dirty power will cause similar issues, without throwing a code for bad ignition coil

    Thanks for this man!
    2007 Sport Trac. 256000 KM
    Same engine and trans configuration.
Abs and traction control light at a stop occasionally.
Always clears itself after a few hundred feet.
But gear hunting on the highway lately.
Should I be looking at that over other issues?

Years ago my mother had a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer Premier V8. I loved the SUV personally but my mother hated the transmission. It would shift rough after 20 minutes of driving. At one point it had issues shifting out of park, it was eventually lemon lawed after two years.

I see these mountaineer transmission act up or fail. So replacing the coils with good quality will fix the issues? I like this truck

Does the 2007 Sport Trac have a transmission Vent Cap similar to the 2013 Ford Escape?

Hi and thanks for all of your hard work and detailed video's. I wanted to know can all this be applied to an 02 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0? I have no check engine or service engine light or codes. I was driving and out of nowhere the O/D OFF light started flashing. I pulled over, turned it off and then restarted it. When I turned it back on the light was off. I proceeded to leave and when I got around 30mph I was having issues taking off. I had high revvs and it acted like it didn't want to go anywhere but after a few seconds it did. I am not the original owner of this vehicle so I have no clue of how often the previous owner checked the transmission fluid. Also there is no dipstick for me to know how much is in. The pan is under the bottom and is sealed. I'm really anxious because I do everything to keep this thing running like new. Please help. Thanks

I love watching your videos my husband has a 2005 Ford Explorer so found this fasinating. You know I can't wait to look under his hood and see what he has...even though it applies to 2006. Still interesting as I think the shops DO guess... my 08 ford Focus S keeps showing the death dreaded wrench light -automatic 2.0L dumb me turns the car off...drove to auto zone -no code was found ...i see now I need to leave the car on for the code to be picked up. I think it has something to do with the throttle body. Do you happen to have a vid specifically for it? One VID I watch until I realized it was a manual transmission-regardless the vid are so great give me a tool.....I bet I could do it myself. Thank you for all your vid's

My 2008 4.6L had the same symptoms with the wrench light and surging...had it towed and it took two days to find the problem...O2 sensor and wiring pigtail.

We have a 2006 Ford Expedition it was running fine then we drove from Louisiana to Florida and back and now it goes thru the gears really rough depending on how fast I'm going and how much I am accelerating. The knowledge I have gained From your videos leads me to believe it may be either the Mass Air Flow sensor or a Vacuum problem. Would you tell me what you think 🤔please. Thx man.

2013 Ford Edge V6, wrench, no engine issues, but transmission revs high and shifts aggressively. Could it be a similar issue of old coil EMI? It happened while I sat in a drive thru line.

Don't forget the transfer case fluid level! That was my issue! Tranny completely went out due to having little to no fluid in there.

I have a similar “transmission” issue, where when pulling up to a stop it feels like it is loading up. This is not a huge issue. This summer I started getting a new issue. Upon acceleration it sounds like a bus taking off. It is almost like the transmission isn’t shifting properly (I.e., like the engine is reving up) but I am thinking it may be the fan that is making more noise. It does not happen all the time. The other thing we noticed is that the temperature gauge jumps up and we get a warning light. I have checked the coolant level and that is not a problem. I was having a miss fire problem a couple years ago on a couple of cylinders. I decided to replace all of the coil packs and spark plugs at the same time. After watching this video I am glad to say I used OEM parts. I was reading something on a message board today where this guy solved a similar problem by having a thermo bypass replaced in his transmission. I was looking to see if you had any videos on this issue. What are your thoughts? Any suggestions? I have a 06 Explorer w/4.6 auto. Thanks! Micheal
