Lisa tied with Patti Labelle to win a Grammy Award in 1992 for this song as Best female R &B vocal perfornance. The only reason she is not as well known as Mariah and Whitney is she chose to remain a background vocalist rather than continue in the spotlight abd record more of her own albums after her sensational debut. One of the best whistle note singers ever!! Great reaction!

She is a master back up singer. She only put out 1 solo album. She was not comfortable being in the spotlight. She still sing this good to this day. One of the best vocalists in music.

And she’s got a terrific personality to match… I’m in Sydney Australia and hadn’t heard of her before I saw “20 Feet From Stardom”. She came over as a beautiful person there but then I found that there was an interview on YT from when she was on “The Morning Show” in Sydney. I’d missed her 😢tour! Lisa was even more gracious and lovely and the hosts, Larry and Kylie, were captivated by her. Her speaking voice is also lovely, and that’s not always the case with singers. On the whole, Lisa Fischer has the entire package of qualities that make up a great human being.

She is the number one backup singer in the world. Artist fight to have her on tour with them. I have seen her twice on her own tour and I was able to speak with her after her shows. She is such a beautiful spirit. I can't begin to describe the inner and outer beauty of this woman.

The Best I've ever heard.
Saw her live in Columbia, SC in the early 90s. She was backing Luther (worth the ‘rabbit-hole’) and he brought her forward…the adlibs between them were OFF-THE-CHARTS and unforgettable. My chills still have chills!
Was there at that concert and it wassss great, was living off Devine Street in 5 points then. She needs no mic like a few before her with a voice that can fill a room.
I am so glad you reacted to this. She is my all time favorite female vocalist and hands down one of the best female singers. You have to watch the Documentary "20 feet from Stardom" It is about female backup singers, predominantly black, that helped give Rock and roll the flavor it needed, especially British rock. Since they were heavily influenced by the Blues. Lisa is one of the main persons in this Doc. It also talks about how tough it is to transition from a backup singer to a lead singer or your own album. Well done documentary. Watch it! I highly recommend.

Lisa is that girl!! She didn't like the spotlight, so she played the background, supporting other artists, helping and mentoring. But she had the voice, the look, the body for mainstream

Otis Redding was the first great i heard carries a song without saying actual words, then Whitney Houston came along and took Redding's song from coaxial cable to ultra high definition! This lady here is like a Whitney, Aretha Franklin, Maria Carey, Patti Labelle, and Celine Deon all forged into one from the magma of these greats and yet she is so low key, humbled, unassuming... I dont know anything about her before this song or since. She just mysteriously came from backup singing and put out this masterpiece, then quietly retreats behind fogs into the swamp. Why wasnt she invested into and developed by a music label is beyond me. This song is a roller coaster of pure emotions. She takes you to these mountain peaks and just when you think your safe and you trust her, she drops you 5000 feet to these unfathomable depths where you shatter into a billion pieces of patchwork consciousness, leaving you quivering in the fetal position. She is a master of ranges and tones which she suffuses with so much pain and raw emotions, she becomes Whitney in pain 2.0. We have heard Whitney in love and the pain of losing and letting go. But not like the deep well of pain Lisa is pulling from. The musical arrangement itself a blend of instruments - flute, harmonica, cords and those haunting and suspenseful sounds at various intervals just pulls/pushes you to the edge of that cliff before the fall. Never seen anything like it.
I've seen Lisa a couple of times with the Rolling Stones and she always blows the audience away. If you're looking for background info on her she is featured in the movie "20 feet from Stardom" about back-up singers to the stars.
