I think you'll find people aren't rational when it comes to Real Estate. Why do you think that guy saved his house from the forest fire when he could have claimed insurance on a burnt out house? Because of all the memories and trees he planted to mark coming of age of his kids and whatnot. They got house fever and rationalized that the distance wasn't as long as it actually was. When they did their cost benefit analysis they didn't factor that petrol was going to double.

How times have changed? those who stayed in the Mountain can now work from home and they can keep their beautiful Mountain View and gained huge amounts of equity.

The problem is selling your home during a crash as you may have to take a huge loss even if there are buyers. The mountain home seems to suck badly as the renters only pay nominal rent which shows how unattractive it is.

God, I wish I had known this when I left Illinois in 1978 to come to CA, I would have stopped in Texas, Arizona, or Colorado. Oh well, I did retire and moved out of CA in 2014.
Prop 13 is a much smaller factor than lack of supply and growing population. Just the tax issue would not cause so few homes to be built. If we didn't have prop 13, the seniors who bought that $23,000 house in the 1970s would now be paying property taxes on a $1,000,000 house which would be nearly $1000 a month for a home they own.
The working mom on the edge of San Diego County looks like a mental case. Give up the house. Its not as important than your family. Drop the sanity facade.
Back in October 2020 I bought My 2012 Honda Accord EXL-V6 for $12000 with only 26000 Miles, now it only has 32000 miles and it's able to be sold for $17000.
Our parents bought their first home in Eugene, Oregon for $14,000 in 1975. My brother and I bought our first homes, respectively, 4 years ago for well over $300k. Achieving the same lifestyle our parents had was much more challenging for each of us.
Christian Soldier California is best balance of great jobs, awesome outdoors, amazing diversity and awesome weather. There is a reason why everybody wants to come and live in cali.
It's NOT prop 13. It's many other factors. Including Calif legislators and government officials who made this a welfare state. Also, the houses developers are building now are three times larger with all sorts of pricey amenities, which drive up the cost. Greedy politicians always turn to prop 13.
Al Kane California is a rich state. We have budget surplus. And we contribute more to federal coffers than we are reimbursed. States like California feed and house the folks in poor states like Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi.
As pertains to the huge commute to work...an equally huge cup of coffee goes a long way toward soothing the nerves; radio, too, if your car has one; a good heater-A/C if your car has one. And, above all, begin your commute well ahead of time. I'd get up at 4:00 am, get myself ready and on the road no later than 5:00 am. I'd look in my rear view mirror and see the 1st wave of traffic coming up and over the hill I'd passed about 4 minutes before. :- ) It's a grand feeling...like getting all you Christmas shopping done early, going to the Galleria/Houston, sitting in the bistro with a cup of coffee and watching everybody else go crazy. Oh...and by the way..my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was always in the pilot's seat. Keep your faith in Yahweh. He'll surprise you with the gymnastics He'll pull off on your behalf.
Wow, I paid $89,900 for my first house in 2005! It was brand new, 3 bedroom 2 bath with a 1 car garage. It was only 4.2 miles from where I worked, it was great! I still own that house even though I no longer live there. I don't understand why so many refuse to move. I now own houses in Kentucky, Tennessee and South Carolina. Rent is much cheaper in these areas and to buy is less than half what it is in San Diego. There are a lot of places that are affordable. Most places in Tennessee and Kentucky a couple can live a pretty comfortable life on $2000/month after taxes and health insurance.
@@CocoaPuff01 yes, minimum wage is $7.25/hour but not even high school students will work for less than $15 these days and entry-level jobs are advertised starting as high as $21/hour. Many of the local fast food restaurants are starting at $15/hr. Now a lot has changed in the last 3 years since I made this post. Housing prices and rent have both shot up. Although they are off their highs during the summer they are still way up. On the Tennessee side a 2 bedroom can range $850 on the low end or as much as $1495 on the high end. We own several properties in the area. Our cheapest is a 2 bedroom condo that rents for $995. We have a 3/2/1 single family house that rents $1250. A 3/2.5/2 single family house with bonus room that rents for $1750. A 2/2.5 townhouse that we rent for $1300. So there is a very decent range of housing in various different budgets.
Mike Loder Great! Got a house that paid for , I own my car, got investments, money in the bank, no kids and a family cottage to go to on the weekends. I'm very blessed!
What's especially sad is that this enormous failure of education is happening cities that have very high bachelors degree percentages. Voters literally don't understand the basics of supply and demand. The problem is jobs. There's too many people being drawn into CA with jobs for out of state people for companies like facebook, google, etc and nowhere near enough housing. We really need to either stop the jobs or increase more housing. Otherwise, things will get worse for everyone. Prop 13 is also egregious as well as the 1% state property tax which needs to be overhauled to go to local areas.
I had to leave San Diego, basically forced to leave with 3 kids. I was emotionally hurt because I never wanted to leave my home where I grew up and was raised. I hope and pray that one day I will break the generational money curse. It’s all about oppression!
It’s so wrong. They don’t have these problems in europe and they live much much better...free health care, way better food for the kids in schools, vacation pay, lots more time off., maybe not a house of their own but usually good homes.. I’m very disappointed in USA..We live so much worse...with a lot more stress..The rich are sucking us dry and have no remorse. In the early part of the century the rich paid very high taxes
I bet they all have TV they pay for and expensive cell phones with mega plans. How many times do they all get their nails done? How many time do you buy a coke or coffee outside of home? When you can have coffee from home in a travel cup and water out of of the tap, chilled in your own refrigerator.
Are they really blaming all this on Prop 13? What about unlimited immigration? Even if they build all the houses needed you could not manage the amount of growth. Not to mention communities would be non-existent and people would leave cheek to jowl in a fragmented mass. Infrastructure could not be built fast enough with such a fragmented community. And traffic would still be an issue. Also immigration is great tool for creating wealth divided. Why is mass immigration never mentioned? The intellectual dissonance is crazy. Dishonest, emotionally manipulative, reporting.
That's why I was determined to leave San Diego after graduating from SDSU. It was difficult for me to find a job in which I gained my degree in. I now live in Clark County Nevada aka Las Vegas. I live in a house that may cost $700,000 plus i San Diego. I now work for the local government here with 15 minute commute from home to work. I would say the quality of living is good for me.
You pay for the weather by accepting lower wages, no insurance, etc. the weather counts as part of your compensation and they know it! Thank goodness for Prop 13. It won’t change anything.
I thought this video was going to be about poverty, or hardworking families struggling to get by. Not middle class dummies who have made poor life choices and deflected their blame onto everyone else.
@Motootua Sipaia Very true When I was debating about buying a new house I was visiting Australia and noticed that a fixer upper house was selling for 700k I went ahead and bought my new 300k house and never looked back
Honestly i don't see what the big deal is about the great california living dream is about and there's nothing special about that damn state it's all fake and plastic and the only people who really can afford it are the celebrities with their beverly hills homes and hollywood homes i mean i never liked california i just don't see why out of all states people think with the mentality of "i have to live the american dream in california" there are other places where you can live the american dream in other states and are far cheaper and be happy but ever since the 1940's being in california and living the california dream is something everyone wants to do i mean get over it it's all plastic and fake
The saying 'you make your own bed..lay in it'. People make choices. One would think quality of life would first priority, especially if they have families. People who desire city life..beaches..sunny weather year round know there is compromise..a premium for that lifestyle. I feel for folks living in places like California or New York. To really enjoy the amenities...you have to be well off financially..above average income level..not be living from paycheck to paycheck. I live in the mid-west..very nice, good neighborhood...affordable 2 bedroom, apartment..laundry room and fireplace, with a balcony..I live in driving distance to larger cities offer entertainment, shopping. 2 professional sports teams..we just won super bowl..by the way! I can afford a nice car, take vacation...l want for nothing. On an average income.

and older generations want to point at the Gen Y. aka Older Millennials (born in 1980-1995) and say we are lazy because many of us still live with our parents well into our 30s. Well, this is why we have been living with our parents. The cost of living is way too high then the money we are making. The coast of living in the 1970s for the baby boomers when they were in their 20s was a lot cheaper for them. They could move out of their parents house in their 20s and manage to pay for rent, electric/ heat, phone, food, and gas for your car. Our generation today has more what I call modern technological luxuries such as cable TV, cell phones, and internet service. All of which you have to pay a bills for every month just to have these luxuries. We could eliminate them out of our lives and live simply but it is hard in today's world to do so. Our technology today has become so intertwined in our day to day lives that it seems that we can't function without them.
14 years later, in 2023, I listen them say ' rents are too high, gas is too high, food is too high, wages are too low,...and I think: be patient, haven't seen nothing yet...

Wait, did they just say every generation is supposed to live twice as well as their parents?? I disappoint yet again!
Florida is a better and cheaper place to live No state income taxes
Christian Soldier California is best balance of great jobs, awesome outdoors, amazing diversity and awesome weather. There is a reason why everybody wants to come and live in cali.
Hurricanes, etc....
Tons of homeless that’s nice in California
Thats because more people want to live here desperately. There is no homelessness in bad places to live because nobody wants to live there.
Utah looks pretty nice 👍
Why the hell is she smiling so damn much?

This documentary was posted on RUclips 4 years after RUclips was created.
Animesh Das Someone has to feed the states with the highest black populations
The gravy train myth is a great slush fund for the state!
But who’s going to supply all the jobs? Wish they could
@@janiebird76 start your own business, it's easy!
@@Scott-by9ks lol, well luckily i’m retired but thank you...
The states where min wage is $7, shocker
Chris Carter: Sir I admire your thoughtfulness. You humble me sir. Thanks. SD food bank.
All by design.
Way to go Thomas , you are the man , you won't give up your home ,I like that ,
interesting stats. how is that empowerment working out ladies?
@@janiebird76 Cuba is the place for you if commie California doesn't already steal enough money from hard working people to subside your lazy ass

They thought they were priced out in 2004? 💀💀
Try 2023 💀
In order, to make the right choice. You have to do your homework.
11 years later and things have gotten worse I'd say.
I bet they all have TV they pay for and expensive cell phones with mega plans. How many times do they all get their nails done? How many time do you buy a coke or coffee outside of home? When you can have coffee from home in a travel cup and water out of of the tap, chilled in your own refrigerator.
But they all want to blame the Boomers.
in 1974 a house in michigan was 46 k califorinia was 54 k
In 1970 a new home in IL wAs 40k, while my aunt's really nice home in CA was 26k.
I used to live in San Diego
Who cares
Are they really blaming all this on Prop 13? What about unlimited immigration? Even if they build all the houses needed you could not manage the amount of growth. Not to mention communities would be non-existent and people would leave cheek to jowl in a fragmented mass. Infrastructure could not be built fast enough with such a fragmented community. And traffic would still be an issue. Also immigration is great tool for creating wealth divided. Why is mass immigration never mentioned? The intellectual dissonance is crazy. Dishonest, emotionally manipulative, reporting.
"By 2000 the median homeprice in california was $234,000, the national was 147K and in 2004 gas was $2 per galon"
Me watching this in 2022 💀😐😐😐
move
That's why I was determined to leave San Diego after graduating from SDSU. It was difficult for me to find a job in which I gained my degree in. I now live in Clark County Nevada aka Las Vegas. I live in a house that may cost $700,000 plus i San Diego. I now work for the local government here with 15 minute commute from home to work. I would say the quality of living is good for me.
You pay for the weather by accepting lower wages, no insurance, etc. the weather counts as part of your compensation and they know it! Thank goodness for Prop 13. It won’t change anything.
Its easy to save money. Just live like you don't have any.
I thought this video was going to be about poverty, or hardworking families struggling to get by. Not middle class dummies who have made poor life choices and deflected their blame onto everyone else.
And live near your job ! And quit complaining
thats why i bought my house in 2008 when the economy was in the dumps - it is great., i am living my American dream
excellent application of a movie based on true citizen frustration; 'Falling Down'

Idk for me no town or house is worth that commute and that much stress. These folks need some Dave Ramsay mixed with Joshua Becker.
These houses are cheaper then houses here Australia
@Motootua Sipaia
Very true
When I was debating about buying a new house I was visiting Australia and noticed that a fixer upper house was selling for 700k
I went ahead and bought my new 300k house and never looked back
Just move.... da
I have the biggest blank stare......😐

She's right ower paychecks are the same but everything is going up...don't make Sence does it ..it will never Change
$50,000. That's £39,710.11 I My brother is a Head Chef in Cambridge (very wealthy area) and he doesn't earn that much. I don't know many people in the UK that do! So in the U.S. where you pay next to nothing for gas ... what are these people doing with their money?
Unfortunately that’s the problem with most Americans. Buy it now, worry about the responsibilities and problems later! What I can’t stand is this “feel sorry for me because I made stupid decisions because I’m not really an adult!“.
Read the comments and all the losers want to "tax the rich" to subsidize their lazy asses too
Why does the Alabama guy sound British?
and older generations want to point at the Gen Y. aka Older Millennials (born in 1980-1995) and say we are lazy because many of us still live with our parents well into our 30s.
Loser!
14 years later, in 2023, I listen them say ' rents are too high, gas is too high, food is too high,
wages are too low,...and I think: be patient, haven't seen nothing yet...
Don't forget the illegal immigrants !
Ummm... Can we get an example of a real financial struggle? cause this aint it!!! How in the high heaven do you purchase a house without thinking of the commute. These people have other issues (mental) and money ain't one... Lol
Its all worth it
What you call. You don't own your house. House owns you.
Should have let the house burn to the ground.
Townhouse for 1700 !!!!
Probably about 2500 now
