I CARE A LOT Q&A | TIFF 2020

  • Director J Blakeson, Rosamund Pike, Peter Dinklage, and Eiza Gonzalez in conversation with TIFF in advance of I CARE A LOT's premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival. A legal conservator (Pike) who defrauds elderly clients runs afoul of a gangster (Dinklage), in this droll thriller from Blakeson.
The 45th Toronto International Film Festival runs September 10 to 19, 2020. For more, visit tiff.net.
Parens patriae refers to a government’s obligation to protect those of its citizens deemed too vulnerable to care for themselves. Although altruistic in intent, it is a principle that has been exploited to forcibly place senior citzens under the care and control of court-appointed guardians. With his sardonic thriller I Care A Lot, writer-director J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed) lays out the duplicitous means by which these guardians can overmedicate, gaslight, swindle, and even kidnap their elderly wards, all within the bounds of the law.
The ice-cool Marla Grayson (Rosamund Pike) is one such unscrupulous profiteer. Having made a mint selling off the assets of the dozens of retirees trapped in her permanent care, she and her partner Fran (Eiza González) stumble upon a veritable golden goose in the form of Jennifer Peterson (Dianne Wiest), a mark with no apparent family or debt, only a tidy fortune to be mined. But, while applying their scam, Marla and Fran soon discover that Ms. Peterson is not who they thought she was, and that their actions have disturbed the designs of a crime lord (Peter Dinklage).
Part cautionary exposé of all-too-real elder abuse rackets, part welcome excuse to pit the wickedly entertaining Pike and Dinklage against each other in a game of uproarious reprisals, I Care A Lot barrels along a twisty trajectory rife with terribly dark, but darkly funny, behaviour - as well as adamant reminders to please respect your elders.
J Blakeson was born in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England, and studied film and literature at the University of Warwick. His credits as director include The Disappearance of Alice Creed (09), which premiered at the Festival, The 5th Wave (16), the BBC miniseries Gunpowder (17), and I Care A Lot (20).

I’m not going to say that as a country, America isn’t bad about about sending elderly people to nursing homes. BUT this movie isn’t about that. Some, if not all, of the old people in the movie, were forced by these women con artists into care. It wasn’t their families.

Pike was amazing! She carried the whole movie with her strong deranged character and witty lines. Lots of surprises. It's a fun and interesting movie. To those of you who are complaining it was a bad movie because the leads are bad people: that's the point. I hate her from start to finish but she really good.

I really loved this film , it has so many things in it that somehow mesh perfectly - satiric social commentary, thriller, action, brilliant acting all around, twisty plot, openly entertaining. And Ms Gonzalez said it very well - it breaks stereotypes. So many stereotypes broken without any fuss was such breath of fresh air - about roles that women can inhabit, about wise judges, about mafia bosses and mafia in general, about old people etc. Top marks, this film👏

I hope people realize how real this is. We have family being abused by a bank that's small and local to them but has been around over 130 years so that bank has given work to every local law firm, ensuring that none would ever represent anyone against them. By suing this 97 yr old and his 94 yr old wife, the bank has ensured that no government protection agencies will investigate the bank's wrongdoing, since govn't agencies won't get involved when there's a lawsuit. AND, though the couple fired the bank before the bank sued, the lawsuit ensures that the bank can continue to charge the couple fees and use their money as the bank wants..... even if the bank does NOthing for them. The bank is supposed to be in charge of the couple's money and assets and pay their bills but they've allowed health and life insurance policies to lapse and loans to go unpaid, let their home foreclose, and let debts double and triple..... And, in the end, this 97 yr old man (who worked until age 74) and his 94 yr old wife (who worked until age 80), and their daughter, who has taken care of them full-time and without pay for 5 years, will be bankrupt because the bank has ensured that the couple pays ALL attorney fees for both sides, as well as the bank's fees for continuing to commit financial rape of this couple.

Not the kind of movie (violence & seemingly amoral characters) I would normally have watched, but when I finally did watch anyway, WOW! The depth of all of the characters hooked me, especially the depth of the love and commitment Marla & Fran have for each other, WOW again, very female, very lesbian. I want to know so much more about their relationship and how they each ended up so jaded and then together, etc. (actually, same for the mobster & his mom). I would watch the sequel without any hesitancy although the reasons I would want to see and watch are probably not the reasons to motivate it being written and made. I'd love to see it though. Well Done to all involved! Thanks....
