Some mother fishes, spiders, and most mother crocodilians care for their young, but mother animals other than birds and mammals are generally more likely to eat their offspring than care for them. Paternal care is much more common among fishes and amphibians than maternal care, because it is often closely linked to territorial defense on these animals. Among phalaropes and jacanas (which are wading birds), parental care is exclusively paternal.

People might forgot that great blue herons are fierce predators of not just fishes, but anything smaller than them. The mother duck was protecting her babies from a vicious killer. Respect.
The reason why the duck was manoeuvering was to stay away from the heron's ultimate weapon, the razor-sharp beak which can stab with lightning force when their necks are held in the "S" position. Their powerful beaks can literally kill a human, when cornered, especially by predators or humans, they stab for the eyes.
We used to have a heron that would stop by the neighbor's pond most mornings to catch some fish or frogs. The neighbor said she was pretty disappointed when he speared and ate her favorite giant bullfrog. Haven't seen him in awhile.

Herons have a snake like coiled neck that can spring out at blazing speeds with a spear like beak which is actually more efficient at killing on first strikes than a snake. I knew what was potential here but the duck used strategy and surprise then going under the board where the heron could not follow.
