  • Today we are taking a closer look at Vivitar 28mm f2.8 MC Close Focus Wide Angle. This lens is real bargain - it can be acquired very cheaply, but it also performs really well - both as a landscape lens and as a close up lens. I enjoyed using it quite a lot.
    Let me know if you have any questions and I hope you'll enjoy the latest episode.

    Went out and bought a copy of this because of this review. Went with Minolta SR mount, and mounting it is a tad (we're talking like 0.5mm) off from actual Minolta, using a K&F Concept MD-NEX PRO adapter. The minimum focus range is amazing, and IQ was just as it is with your photos!

    Another excellent video - the close focus ability is really impressive. I was always aware of Vivitar but I'd never paid their stuff that much attention - I did buy one of their lenses recently, a M42 screw mount 28mm f2.5 (I was attracted by the slightly faster f2.5) which I haven't tried yet, it's in the "waiting to be fixed" pile because it needs it's optics cleaned.

    • @VintageOptiks

      GrumpyTim Thank you so much! Yeah when I heard about how short the minimum focusing distance of this lens is I had to try it. 😬 I love its versatility. I think that there are some great Vivitar lenses out there, but because they commissioned so many different companies to make their lenses - there is also a big variety of quality. I would love to hear what you think of the 28mm f2.5.

      @@VintageOptiksit may be too late to get an answer, but about 6 months ago I had gotten a tokina 28mm 2.5. In my opinion it is pretty decent. It probably doesn't focus as closely as the lens in this video, but does get pretty close to that number. For me it seems plenty sharp, but I wear glasses so it might not be pin sharp. Overall it is a great lens for my purposes.

    I'm not particularly fan of 28mm's but having such close focus have to consider it
    .. also worth mentioning: I'm really pleased with my Komine made "Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm" it is indeed a legendary zoom, my copy is prone to purple fringes but easy to correct in post, it gives it's images a kind of 3D-Pop and pounchy colors many many modern primes just would dream of .. So Komine-made is no joke !

    Thanks for the informative video. I have a questions. I found a 28mm f2.8 with a 49mm filter size with Amcam as the manufacturer. It looks exactly like the Vivitar lens. Is it just a rebranded lens that is exactly the same as the Vivitar?

    • @VintageOptiks
      @VintageOptiks  2 года назад +1

      Hi! Glad you enjoyed the video. Regarding the Amcam lens - it’s hard to tell who the manufacturer is. My guess is that Amcam used one of the Japanese lens manufacturers that Vivitar also used to produce their lenses which is why they look similar. That happened a lot back in the day which makes it tricky to identify the manufacturers of certain lenses. I’ve heard that the Amcam 28mm lens has a pretty good IQ but I personally haven’t tried it.

    • @charliejg
      @charliejg 2 года назад +1

      @@VintageOptiks Thank-you for the reply. This vintage lens world can be tricky to navigate. I have three right now. Two zooms from my 80s Ricoh X-RP kit and one 50mm f1.8 FD. The FD lens has been fun. I use it on a Fuji X-T3. I've been a bit frustrated looking at Fuji primes because of the prices. As an amateur/enthusiast it's hard to justify paying that much. can your recommend a vintage "true" wide angle lense for the panasonic g7

    • @VintageOptiks
      @VintageOptiks  3 года назад

      Hi, since the Panasonic g7 has a micro 4/3 sensor (with a crop factor of 2x) it will be tough finding a vintage lens that will give you a true wide angle field of view for your sensor. You’ll have to find a lens between 8 and 15 mm to have a wide angle on a micro 4/3 system. And super wide angle vintage lenses can be quite expensive. The Tokina RMC 17mm f3.5 is probably the best affordable vintage option. Everything else is quite pricey. That’s one of the main reasons why I have a full frame camera, because I never have to worry that my sensor is going to crop some of the image that the lens is projecting.

    • @VintageOptiks

      The word auto means that the aperture stops down automatically. But that is a feature that only works with film SLR cameras from the past. If you are adapting this lens to a mirrorless camera you don’t need to worry about it. So auto or not, it’s all the same if you are adapting the lens. Neither lens is better or worse.

    Hii dear friend. I have Vivitar 28mm f2.8 auto wide angle lens.The serial number also starts with 28xxxxx. Is there any difference with your lens? Thanks

      Hello friend. The only difference is that my lens has the ability to focus a bit closer than the regular Vivitar 28mm f2.8 lens. Judging by the serial number of your lens, you also have a Komine made Vivitar. Mine can focus down to 23cm and yours to 30cm, which is not that different unless you really love to shoot close ups. But other than that, they are pretty much the same. There were a lot of different versions made of that lens by different manufacturers. If you ever want to take a deep dive into this subject, here is a blog that lists all the different versions: photografica.robinparmar.com/vivitar28detail.html#M04

      The only difference is that Close Focus Wide Angle lenses can focus down to 23cm, and regular Wide Angle lenses focus down to 30cm. Not that big of a difference unless you really love to focus super close with your 28mm lens.

      I don’t think so, but I have no way of testing it.
