Hardest dedicated focal length I've ever had to use hands down. The lens is pretty great, but I've got a lot to learn with it in the photography world. What's the most challenging lens you guys have used?
PS: Shot most of these between F5.6-F11, the sweet spot for the lens is DEFINITELY F/8. Any questions leave them down below.
Secret is simple - just imagine you're a fish with a photographic eye.
@@maxnits9556 lol! Truth!
For me it's my Jupiter 11, 135mm never seem to be long enough, or I'm always to near. (Full frame)
Sometimes I bring only this Jupiter 11 to force myself to use it, at least when I walk around for exercise.
Anyhow nice video, as always!
135mm f3.5 super tak! This was a weird focal length for me so I sold it. I kind of wish I didn’t sell it but I can always get another.
I struggle with my 15mm Voightlander Superwide Heliar. Some reasons I think: wider angles are so much harder to limit what’s in the frame. Get too close to a foreground subject and distortion is extreme. Too far away and it’s boring.
Just effortless class. They keep getting better and more refined. Really loved the style on this review Mark, predominantly covering shots makes more sense. Loved it.
Thanks AJ! I was worried the lack of to camera might be a little disconnecting, but people aren't there to see my face...it's always about the lens ;)
Thanks mate!
The modern Pentax APS-C equivalent, the 15mm f/4, is also a great lens. I agree that its a tough FoV to use, but when a scene comes together it really impresses. If I were a FF shooter I'd probably want this, but for APS-C, Pentax's 21mm f/3.2 is the more sensible choice. Every time I feel I want a Takumar, I keep getting sidetracked by later, smaller lenses, so at some point I need to get myself a Spotmatic only to justify having an extra collection of M42 lenses alongside my K-mount stuff. The Helios 58mm will probably be my first to pick up, but I have a lifetime to collect everything that piques my interest.
Super video and review, food for thought, have to start looking for one of these now!- thanks Mark, excellent content as usual!
Thanks Neil!
Your reviews are always so entertaining love the way you edit and the music you use :))
You're the best Layila! Thanks for the kind words, content you produce and your continued visits!
Another well-made video Mark. GAASSS!
Thanks GLENN! Sorry about the GAASSSSSSSS I'm like carbonated water sometimes....quench some thirst, but belch inducer ;)
That was great. The history behind the lens was quite interesting. After the comments on your Instagram about the Takumar I had to jump over here and see what I was missing. Never disappointed. Thank you Mark.
Well thanks for swinging by Ned! I'm working on some Contax Carl Zeiss background stuff now and THoSE lenses have history mate!
Surviving WORLD wars, COLD wars, Corporate wars and COLA wars lol....they're a true testament of perseverance and quality for sure.
This has to be the Very best Review that its for this vintage lens ... Every shot carefully- crafted as every video that Mark share whit us
Thanks Xeo989, funny thing was I hated everything about it until about Thursday night. Somehow got it into an order that I was satisfied with. Funny how that works.
A great lens and one of my favorites. I think it's at its best when its close focus, sharpness wide open, and wonderful bokeh come together. Under such circumstances it has a surprisingly (to me) shallow depth of field considering the focal length and maximum aperture.
I picked up a nikkor af 20mm 2.8 lens at a thrift store for 10 dollars. It's quite a sharp lens too!
Wow! That’s a gem Donald! Honestly hold onto that!!
Amazing deal! I just saw one at a camera store for $300.
I paid around $250 for mine and don’t regret it. There’s probably some distortion with it, but nothing I’ve ever noticed.
Perfect message as usual 😊
Oh yes!!! Another amazing video! Keep them coming!
Thanks Allan! It was funny, I hated this video until about Thursday night it started to come together for me.
Fantastic presentation Mark. I don’t have anything like that. Looks like a real performer.
Thanks Tim! It's a fun lens for sure! Might be interesting with some of your sculptures. Hope you're well mate! Loving your portraiture work lately.
You’ve become my favorite channel for vintage lens reviews
That’s saying a lot mate! Appreciate the confidence boost. Appreciate you being here!
Another simple and informative
video in your seductive style.
Thanks John! This lens surprised me a bunch. Kind of fell in love with the super wide during the process of using it. Didn’t think I would like it as much as I do.
You do better lens reviews than guys who are sent lenses by the big photo brands. I love it.
Super nice of you to say thank you! I've been bitten by the vintage bug clearly.
@@MarkHoltze Yeah you nails it
Absolutely enjoyed it!! Loved it! I hope everyone else felt as weird as I did about all those cameras on me with the smoke flare haha! So rad to finally meet you IRL and rad to have this vid as a documentation of it!
You handled the "firing squad" with class Cody. I had a jump kick shot in the can, but mine wasn't a great angle so I left it out. I saw too many of the other posted ones clean and didn't feel like it did your perfect kick justice. I probably should have got some sound bites from you as well, but you were working so hard that day I didn't want be a bother. Enjoyed the meeting you and the convo's we had, even if that's not in the "can" that's up here. Thanks for stopping by!
in general, the few videos i watched, that you have on your YT page, are pretty good. Actually, great work.
Thanks John! Super cool of you to say mate. I enjoy making them so if that somehow tracks, it makes me happy.
every video you do on Takumar lenses I watch. I want every single one of those lenses.
It’s my love song to the lenses themselves. I have nothing to do with it lol. It’s all them
Your comment regarding chromatic aberration in certain sorts of shots (i.e. bright sky backgrounds) rings true to my experiences with my Pentax SMC-M and SMC-A lenses. I don't know about the Takumars, but I have learned with the K-mount lenses to underexpose a bit more than the metering tells me to. The aberration seems to increase a bit exponentially if any bright element is too hot. So underexposing keeps it at bay a bit and I can usually recover the shadows in post. Doesn't work every time, especially if you should at F16 or smaller (F5.6 to F11 is, as you say, the zone of sweetness), but it will save some shots.
That’s smart Rick, underexpose those high contrast areas! Might experiment with that! Thanks!
Create a t-shirt "Takumar Gang" i would love to have one :p
I would wear one of those as well!
Great review! Currently shooting the hell out of my 24/3.5 tak, og which I just love the close focus distance and bokeh, which is also a fun challenge to work with creatively.
The takumar addiction is in full effect..
IN FULL EFFECT!!! I saw a mint condition Tak 24 3.5 at a gear sale awhile back, I already have the FD 24 2.8 and figured given the price he was asking ($350) felt like it was a little on the high end.
@@MarkHoltze that is indeed very expensive! Got mine mint for the equivalent of 140usd. Was certainly worth it.
thanks for this informative content. I always like to watch something about Takumar lenses and in this particular moment it helps me to distract from what is happening with the coronavirus here in Italy
My pleasure mate, stay safe out there!
its such a pretty lens dam.. great video :)
Thanks David, ya she's pretty great. I actually didn't even think i would particularly LIKE it, but if it's something the Taks have a way of doing, it's charming me.
Got a 28mm f2 weird osawa lens but after some practice I love the wide perspective and colors it produces
Yes! It's so fun!
Great stuff, as always. :)
Thanks for watching mate!
Nice another to go on my list.
It's surprisingly good. I wish it was a bit faster, but not entirely necessary. Would make a great astro lens at 2.8
That's sweet that LR has a lens correction preset. Looks great!
Ya makes a huge difference I think. Lens is great on a super 35 sensor, you can get so close and the flaws of the distortion aren’t as prominent.
I might buck the trend here, but I think this lens would be great for product photography. The beer shot 3:58 is a great example of this.
Looks like you guys had a great meetup / photography tour!
I think so, I definitely evolved my eye since shooting with it, mostly through experimentation, but also from shooting a lot of shots I hated lol. Thanks dude!
I recently picked up the pentax 17mm f4 fisheye, the 18mm 3.5 and the 20mm f4 (all in k mount ) I think it's extremely fun to play with leading lines, using distortion in artistic ways, and deciding how complexed or simplistic you want you're framing to be.
It’s so cool! Wide makes you look at things so differently but I love it! Being stuck on a dedicated lens as well really helps enforce that crossing the threshold of comfort too. Nope can’t zoom in, need to move my feet.
Good job, great images and yes it's deceptively more advanced to use a very wide angle lens. Also wide cameras such as the xpan. I think you did great with these though
Thanks Ray, definitely a challenge. Learned a lot using it alone, but looking to expand on that. Anything that teaches though is a good investment I think. Thanks for hanging out mate.
I use the "legendary" Canon FL 19mm 3.5 R lens. I take film photos with it mainly. I really love the distortion and the flare it gives is crazy beautiful. upclose distortion is what I really like about it, but it basically had no background separation. Overall I really like it for urbex/architecture use up close.
Love Canon FL lenses, I'm trying hard NOT to start a collection of those lol.
Just found you channel, i love both the style you shoot the video and the content, great to see these vintage lensen displayed in such a nice way!
I've get a 20mm (CZJ Flektogon 20mm f/2.8) to use as a wide macro prime coupled with a M42 to Sony E focus helicoid adapter. Think about it, the results are really unique!
Keep up the good content!
Thanks Mattia! Your CZJ sounds pretty amazing, going to keep an eye out for one of those! Anywhere I can see some results?
@@MarkHoltze Here some of my shots, if you like:

I like the flares for video.
Classy vid/review, Mark. Footage and stills make for spot-on concept illustrations. Mix of color and monochrome also a plus. Nice to see your Spotmatic is still center stage. Have the SMC 2.8 28mm - your post inspires me to put it to use on my Sony gear. Agree that neutral color rendition is benefit, given today’s editing software. Did your copy come w/a hood?
Thanks Paul! Ya I felt the monochrome stuff looked kind of cool so those were a last minute inclusion. They were back in the late summer when I got the lens. . Spotmatic is my baby, love it! No hood, but I've got the Simmod hood 58-77mm for VND matte box use. It's perfect because it doesn't vignette despite the wide angle.
Pentaxian's named the SMC 20mm a "Rare Bird 🐦" fun fact from the photography community. Great for Landscapes, Architecture with the added bonus close minimum focus distance to get photographs with a unique angle of view. Another great video 👌👏👏.
Rare BIRD! Let me change the title to that, because that's dope. Thanks mate!
Now I know what it's like the be an influencer lol.
Clicking like before this even starts. Love this lens! One of my favorites. It’s so good for photos and it rocks on my BMPCC4K also. You should also check out the Contax Zeiss lenses those rock also! EDIT: I paid 60$ for mine from Dot Dotson. It’s perfect and you could say mint or like new. No mold no nothing. So deals are out there. On my BMPCC4K it’s on a Speedbooster 0.71 for nice wide shots. It’s a bit much on the .64. But love it.
Nice! Ya it’s a great lens! I’ve been building my Zeiss prime set. 35 1.4, 50 1.5 60 macro 2.8 and 85 1.4....looove then. Used the 35 in all the top down shots and talking head shots in this video actually.
Been eyeing up a Vivitar 19mm f3.8 on eBay to complete my PK mount vintage primes set. Bit pricier, but I really want something that'll give me that bit extra focal length for gimbal work.
This Takumar lens may just have to be considered though...
Great review as always, Mark! Loved the video and photo results :D
Thanks! The Tak is nice, but I could see the allure of 3.8 over 4.5.
great vid as always mate! ever seen the 15mm they produced ive been on the watch for one to try it out seeing the distortion in the 20 mm makes me wonder how wild the smaller lens would be
Thanks Tigers Media! Ya a 15 would be crazy, I mean the 17 fisheye was nuts, but a 15mm wide would just be insane. The diff between this and a 24mm is pretty big...I need to go check that 15 out now lol. Thanks! Enjoy the rest of your weekend mate.
@@MarkHoltze cheers mate ill let you know if I can find one
@@34Media Exellent! Good luck!
I have a question about sunstar! It have 10-point sunstar, how do it look like?
Nice! We love wide angle lenses here at FDX.
I’m a believer now myself ;)
On my Panasonic GX85, this lens would provide an effective 40mm focal length, which is a dang handy focal length. It would be even darker than f4.5, but I’ve found most of my old Pentax glass benefits from some under-exposure anyway. Based on your footage, it seemed decently sharp at 4.5.
Pretty good for daytime street for sure. You can use that slower lens speed to shoot from the hip for street if that's your thing ;).
Hey @Sony @Canon @Lumix @ Fujifilm, this is how you do a lens review. Might want to ask your "influencers" to do a bit more with the opportunities you present them.
Fantastic job Mark, really.
Thanks Rogue One! It's kind of nice operating outside the big camera brands, there's a level of freedom that come with doing something 100% for you (and your audience). :) I also like using these items a LOT before I review them.
Flare also kills the contrast and hazes up the picture. I prefer to keep flare out of my shots so I have more room when editing or less work to do. Great video and good review on this lens. Price is a little high for me and considering some of the draw backs I’ll might skip this lens for now. My favorite Asahi lens is the Super Tak 55 2. I love the colors it produces and contrast in my shots.
Ya it's high and it's high because there aren't many of them on the market, definitely not a reason to buy a lens. A 24mm Canon FD 2.8 is $100 and is faster with less distortion.
Hey Mark, consider looking at the most legendary of Pentax lenses - the 35-105 f3.5. I think you will be very happy with it.
I will mate! Thank you!!
Appreciate your videos: I have been shooting with Pentax for years assorted film and K10D K5 K1 all amazing cameras and so so underrated: Pentax don’t spend millions on advertising but rather give it back with low cost high quality cameras: I really wish more people would give them a go. They would be amazed: Everyone now days are using their lens because they are so high quality, now what does that say about their cameras? In my books they are the best, totally weather sealed, rugged, high quality: Any way I love them
you're right Brian! They barely make a mark, gosh i walk into most cameras stores and I see, Canon, Sony, Lumix, Fujifilm and that's it. I don't think any of them have any on display.
Mark Holtze simply because they don’t get the commission on Pentax like they do on Nikon and Canon. My K1 kills the Nikon D850, yep-the Nikon has a couple more ticks and whistles but that’s it not worth an extra few grand for:
That's a funky curved distortion, not sure of how could be corrected in video editor but would be cool.
Can't really be corrected easily in video, but you shoot 4k and punch in it could help. Super 35 and this work nicely together.
@Mark Holtze I know at least one software that does custom created lens corrections for video: steadxp.com/demo_v1/ The product actually is an external gyro stabilizer that comes with this software. I don't trust much the lens distortion correctors of common video editors, since is a 3d geometry problem lack of precision can be crappy.
I'd rather have the 17mm and correct for distortion with a little bit more light too. The 20mm f/4.5 has some very unique sharpness characteristics. Extreme sharpness in the center and really soft towards the outside.
Getting that across the board sharpness is tough in these old lenses, designed for film where that didn't matter as much. Higher resolution screens and digital photography sharpness really made that apparent, but I don't hold it against the lens, it wasn't designed for the digital medium.
The Contax Carl Zeiss 21mm 2.8 is going for about $2100 now, it's got that perfect edge to edge sharpness and very little distortion. The lens is from 1979 or maybe 82...crazy it still commands such a high price.
Are any of those lenses af ?
J J no
I would like to see you do a review on Pentax 10-17mm I find that lens amazing for all kinda photography specially it’s almost a macro lens
If I ever get my hands on one, I will for sure!
As an aside, this lens performs well in infrared and even to a surprising extent in ultraviolet.
Good to know!! Never done that before but want to experiment mlre with film
Any thoughts on how this compared the Canon FD 2.8 20mm? Also is this adaptable to a dslr?
Not sure how it compares personally, but someone posted they use this on their 5D mark 2 just fine.
Super multi coated review as always ! Greetings as usual from Singapore . What was that white deposit on the ground ? 😎😉 (My only worry with such lenses is to keep the camera horizontal in order to avoid distortion becoming too obvious.)
SNOW! it's CRUNCHY ;) yOu should hear it ;). Thanks as always for stopping by and leaving a nice comment mate. I appreciate it. I do use grid lines when photographing and if you put something big and in your face in the foreground, you don't notice the curve so much....or in another case you can use it to your advantage. It's all part of my experimentation with the lens and shooting super wide. Normally I'm 24mm min, but being locked at 20 really confines you to problem solve.
@@MarkHoltze You're welcome. I've used the Leica 21mm but I find the 'effect' can override everything else. I always go back to 50mm. And thank you for the snow insight !
I will NEVER not upvote one of your videos my dude 👌
Hold me accountable mate! If it’s no good, bring on the dislike ;). Appreciate your thoughts none the less. Very generous of you :)
I have the 24mm version of this lens. Its a little easier on the framing but I've been happy with it so far.
3.5 right? Great lens, it commands a bit of a price premium though, must be based on rarity.
Mark Holtze yea! They are a bit more compared to the normal price of a Takumar. I got it in a whole lot from a local lady selling for cheap. I had to CLA it a bit but it’s pretty cool
Mark
Great lens unfortunately I found a great deal on a Rokinon 20mm1.8 for $150.00 could not pass up the deal . I love 20mm on a crop sensor for street photography as it gives a great field of view . Sorry have never done instragram or I would give you some pictures I shot in New Orleans in December
How do you like it? It's the perfect crop sensor lens giving you that 35mm FF equivalent.
What do you use to get the motion in your B-roll? I absolutely love it!
The photos are great though! I love the distortion with the blue smoke at 3:09. Great vid man!
It's all 24frames per second, vintage lenses and tripod. Actually this entire video was the first one I shot everything on an old SLR lens. Even the on camera. I did drift on the focus a bit in the on camera so ended up covering list almost ALL of it...but I should have made more of a big deal on that.
Slider was used in the first two shots, set focus on 1) the lens and b) the light stand, everythign else out of focus was intentional. Tripod fluid head for all the pans and the tripod elevated head hand trick I use for the vertical jibs. ALL hacks lol.
@@MarkHoltze Dude love it! What slider are you using? Its one of the programmable ones right?
@@TylerCinema Ya the Rov Pro, perfect small little thing. Will work with M6 mark 2
@@MarkHoltze Sick Ill look into it!
Between this and the czj flektogon 20mm f4 which one do u prefer?
Tough, I guess this because it goes with my other Takumars. If I had more Jena Zeiss I would go with that one.
How would you say in my dear country (Argentina) " VAAAAAAAMOOOO!!! (war cry) AGUANTE LOS TAKUMARS!!! " Great all your videos
Arerrrrhhhhhhhhhh 😂 thanks mate!
Quick question, as a Takumar lover (owning 50 and 135) - are the Pentax mount SMC lens as good or are they worse?
not really sure to be perfectly honest, I've just been partial to the M42 all metal builds. I'm sure the others are great as well, but those were built on the shoulders of these older ones, I think ultimately that's why I'm attracted to these ones.
Takumar build quality is really something else, wonder why Pentax dropped the ball so hard in the digital age
Manufacturing costs I would imagine. They really are something special these lenses.
Hi Mark! I am wondering if you have tested this lens on your 6D to see if there is a mirror hang issue close to infinity? I am considering getting one as an affordable option for landscape shooting but I heard it hangs the mirror of the original 5D.
I haven’t not this one. I have tested Takumars before, the 50, 35 and 85 on a dslr 6Dii and focus was achieved with just the m42 to EOS. Just checked the 20 and the nack element doesn’t protrude out at infinity so it should impact the articulating mirror
@@MarkHoltze Thanks Mark!
2:26 Is that the Distillery District in Toronto?
Yes!
I like my Canon 20/F2.8. 🤠
Very nice lens!
As a total novice shooting aps-c Sony A6000 I’m going to give shooting with this lens a miss for now...... but as an addict, I’m gonna have to try and buy one anyway 😂
The nice thing with this lens on an APS-C is it gives you a 30mm with the crop. The slow aperture is more forgiving with focus as well so in a weird way it's a pretty good starter lens for a APS-C or Super 35mm sensor. Just don't over pay for it, it's priced based on "scarcity" which I never find to be the best vintage deals.
@@MarkHoltze thanks man! By the way, any chance of you giving a review on focal reducers/ speed boosters for aps-c? I know here in the UK I can get an M42 to E mount from 65 quid to over 150 quid! That's a lot of cash difference so would love some pointers before I sell a kidney for a Takumar fisheye lol
Does anybody knows if this lens is radioactive. Does Thorium has been used in this lens?
I don’t think so, there is no yellowing, might have come out after they stopped using it. I can’t say for sure though, I find it tough to find reliable sources online
📝
"write this down" i always love when people tell me that before they tell me something informative.
Have you tried this lens on a apsc camera?
I don’t shoot Aps-c often, but gives you a nice wide option even with the crop.
Which lenses do you use for the shots in your studio?
I should have mentioned this is the first video I shot entirely with vintage SLR lenses. The list:
1) Contax Carl Zeiss 35mm F1.4 (top down stuff and talking head)
2) Helios 44-2 (opening slider shot where I pick up lens and walk over to the table)
3) Contax Carl Zeiss 60mm Macro F2.8 (most of my macro shots)
4) SMC Takumar 100mm Macro F4 (the extreme close up macro stuff)
@@MarkHoltze wow awesome! You have a total unique look with your set. Love it! Thanks for the info.
hello, mark,im a fans from China, may i ask you is smc 20 much better than super version?
Both are equal I would say. Costings impact flaring a bit more than sharpness. Especially older coatings which may have worn over time and are less effective
@@MarkHoltze thanks you,Mark ,i choose super version
How would you compare this lens to the Zeiss Distagon F2.8 / 21mm
Completely different lens, faster, newer. This lens doesn’t come close, but the Zeiss lens is way more money.
@@MarkHoltze True the Zeiss lens was a 90's era lens as opposed to 70's
Yup, 1997 Vs 1971 I think. But the price difference between the two does not reflect the quality. The 21 Zeiss lens though is nearly flawless.
@@MarkHoltze I find this with my old CONTAX Zeiss lenses, they produce crisp quality results, but some of the 70's Takumars are a very good match for the 90's Zeiss. Some less so.
I wonder how this would do for landscape photography.
Stopped to F/8 yes absolutely
@@MarkHoltze I’ll have to give it a look.
It does well enough, when such a field of view is called for. But that is less often than some might think. There is a tendency for such shots to become all foreground and sky, and for central subjects to become lost in the distance. You must think about the whole frame when using these lenses.

Meyer-Optik...will check that out for sure mate! I will as well, super generous of you to offer. What makes it so challenging?
@@MarkHoltze Yeah German stuff ^^ , great be sure to do that ! , an yeah for sure il do that.
Well the challange for me as you also state in your video here is the apature , f/3.5 is tricky, id rather prefer a f/1.8 of 2.0 , BUT its really spectacualar imo, think it has 8 small apature blades and it does gives some nice really nice round bokeh balls, wich look great !
Anyways check it out on flicker etc, i can also send you some samples iv taken if you want!
Is it radioactive?
20 isn’t no
test the Pentax SMC Takumar 15mm f3.5!
SUPER wide!
I've been shooting with Super Takumars since my first roll of film. Funny how people move away from this old glass and spend 10 times as much for some autofocus and superior coatings. Then they add lens flare in post......There's a few Takumars I've been really trying to get my hands on but just haven't had the money when I see the right one. My 50mm f1.4 is and always will be a workhorse.
The 105mm F2.8 is another special Takumar. I'm about to go ahead and buy a 200mm F3.5 Takumar. 18 Aperture blades. Eighteeeeeeeen.
Also, while not a Takumar, I'd like to see you get your hands on the Vivitar Series 1 90mm F2.5. Or the later Tokina variant. Though I believe you'd really Appreciate the build of the Vivitar more. www.flickr.com/photos/lordawesome/49260499957/in/dateposted-public/

Best? Compared to what?
Compared to the countless other wide angle lenses that cost 5x as much ;)
Oly wide angles are pretty cheap. LOL $500 for a good 24mm f2 and over $1000 for the 21mm f2.
f4.5? 😂
