- This is Gengetsu's theme from Touhou 4: Lotus Land Story
Nothin' innocent about you, girl.
So, she comes out to kill you after her sister is defeated. This is basically like the first ever Phantasm stage, except it's during the same stage. I GUESS YOU AREN'T SO ORIGINAL AFTER ALL, YOU GODDAMN GAPHAX-ER YOU!! (I'm naming no names, she knows who she is ¬_¬)
The differences in difficulty between Yuuka and Gengetsu I think show their character quite a lot. One holds back, the other doesn't.
*Yuuka:* Haha, this is going to be fun, I'll go easy on you so lemme mess around.
*Gengetsu:* You just beat up my sister. I'm going to leave you as nothing but a pile of ash for that.
Even the themes seem to reflect that. Yuuka's two themes are powerful, but playful. This theme? Is quiet, and menacing.
If I remember correctly, Gengetsu actually has no idea what the hell is going on, and all she knows is she needs to beat you.

also remember that spellcard rules didn't exist in pc-98 so rape time being impossible to no hit so far makes gengetsu one of the strongest pc-98 touhou characters, with Yuuka and Shinki higher

What were you on about 7 years ago, she actually was innocent in LLS. Think about it, you entered hers and her sisters world, and then beat up her little sister for literally no reason. I feel like gengetsu was pretty innocent.
Now just think about this. An extended video of Gengetsu's theme for 10 minutes. That's approximately 3-5 minutes of dodging you-know-what.

Cute Devil ~ Innocence has honestly become one of my most favorite tracks in the Touhou games. It's a shame I can't seem to find enough, or adequate arrangements of it. It's just so good a tune that deserves more recognition. :c

It's not really Bad Apple, it's just the PC-98 leitmotiv (present in all title themes since TH2, also Shinki's theme and this one). but yeah lol

This sounds really different from most touhou theme from modern game. Cuz Green Eyed Jealously sound so sad, Emotional Skyscraper sounds emotional, The Tiger-Patterned Vaisravana sound strong and intense. But this? It sounds manacing and more quiet and absolutely scary.
This intro...it's one of the best in the serie imo, threatening and powerful.
It's funny how many characters in the pc 98 have powerful or emotional themes while not having that much backstory or charisma. (And that's not a bad thing)

GENGETSU
Gengetsu (幻月) is the second Extra Stage boss of Lotus Land Story and an inhabitant of the mysterious dream world. She's the older sister of Mugetsu.
After the final events of Lotus Land Story the heroine stumbles upon another strange world which Gengetsu's younger sister Mugetsu claims to be her world. Once Mugetsu is defeated Gengetsu comes to her aid, even while admitting she doesn't even know why the heroine is there. Little is known about either her or her sister and they appear to have no importance to the story. (from TouhouWiki)

Despite the simplicity, repetition and the fact that there are many more brilliant Touhou themes out there, this...this is my favourite.
So, according to the title, Gengetsu is a cute, innocent demon. Despise that, sometimes she became the most feartful and most powerful demon. Sometimes she will just tear you in the most horrible way, just because she can. And even, manage to do it maintaining her cute part.

The fandom just completely ruins Flandre imo. I like how Gengetsu is considered terrifying though. Fits with what ZUN said about her being the most terrible boss.

Gengetsu is, in my opinion, the single hardest Touhou boss. I can 1cc a few games on lunatic, and stomp through most extra stages, but Gengetsu is the only one that, to this day, I CAN'T beat.
let me guess? you tried to time out a attack (since there were no spell cards at that point i have to call them attacks) and got curve stopped by one of the 5 to 6 gengetsu rape times.
That's more or less the biggest reason. :p
Trust me, Mugetsu is hard as nails.

A very repetitive song, but not necessarily in a bad way. It's one of the few Touhou songs that borders on terrifying.
Even though her actual character is barely fleshed out, this song alone makes her very interesting. Though I guess that applies to a lot of PC-98 characters.
I consider her one of the top tier characters due to how incredibly hard she is as well as Zun saying she was the most terrible boss or hardest or whatever.

I believe like in LLS the extra stage bosses like went against usual Danmaku game rules or like the power scaling particularly in that game due to how it was slightly programmed or something made power scaling very different than it's next up (MS), which is why if you try to time Gengetsu out, as we all know the rest.... 😏 That's a real test of skill from "higher dimensions" hahah
That moment when you play against her for the first time.. Just doing a random run after quite some time.. You don't remember everything but you manage to beat Mugetsu for the first time and when you battle with Gengetsu.. you get over the first half of her HP, and you die but you decide to practice.. and on the same day you clear that stage.. Damn I'm really telling my experience here now xD
But honestly this is the first Extra Stage I've cleared.. And Gengetsu is just.. Damn xD I don't want to time her out.. I certainly don't want to.

The exact reason it's my favorite extra stage, if not for the appeal of fighting 2 mysteriously powerful characters in a row. It's amazing how the stage feels so difficult and then all of a sudden you've cleared it. Everything is intimidating on a whole new level which is alot of fun IMO. (It's also amusing to imagine the mid-boss to be Nue.)
Well, the point is that the ominous and terrifying feeling of the theme is what makes it for me.
Good memories of listening to this for revisiting Bloons Player Pack 4. Especially during a visit at my father's apartment. Felt like some nostalgic times where I had to rely on skills and confidence to complete the games.

I don’t know where my favorite parts are. A little repetitive like the last theme but I think I’ll say that it’s pretty good/great, I guess
The theme "Cute Devil ~ Innocence" hides something in it. I think it's ironic to have the term "Devil" in her theme even though she looks like an angel(and her form might be one of her illusions). And the word "Innocence" isn't really that innocent, something that is unreal or fantasy with her and the scenario. Her theme may also sound terrorizing and mischievous, as her appearance can deceive your mind(why do you think there's a "Devil" in spite of her angelic appearance). Maybe the moon(I mean the extra stage background of hers') has to do with their (illusory) powers, and uhh...
...unfortunately, the points of the scenario are insufficient since we don't know why the heroes are there(in Mugetsu's Fantasy World), or maybe, ZUN intentionally concealed the story behind that world. As her name states "*Gen*getsu", she is still, somehow, considered a notable boss for Touhou Gensoukyou besides Yuuka.

tbh Nocti's video on Gengetsu made me change how I view gengetsu, i always view her as an evil twin sister of sort but nowadays i see her as a kind (and super protective) sister to mugetsu that will do ANYTHING even send you like a thousand bullets per second to protect her sister
Same here, after watching it i went and read all of her and mugetsus conversations in LLS, and they seem pretty innocent to me.
Fanon versions of characters can really change someone's perspective.
You would think that Gengetsu, Koishi and Flandre are psychopaths without a human heart. But you're just looking at them wrong.

@@CDJAM-webm Yeah. Weather you want to do a character justice or you want to bring something new to the table without changing any of the lore, Fanfics are the way to go. It's always neat when someone does a Fanfic correctly. Looking at you KKHTA and Imperfect Metamorphosis.
Even though I liked the idea of Rin as a character, it had too much nightmare fuel to be fun. That's what I view Touhou as. A happier version of a myth that was disturbing at first. If people make a grimdark version of Gensokyo, sheading every last ounce of sympathy from the characters by making them psychotic or manipulative, why bother.
Good Luck making the world of Gensokyo I know we can make. With how many disturbing events there are in these Fics, we're going to need something to lighten the mood and to remind ourselves why we cared about Gensokyo in the first place.

I swear to god, the extra stage boss themes ALWAYS go faster past midnight! Not just this one, but ALL OF THEM! FROM EVERY GAME! The percussion at 0:16 that's supposed to start off slow and then quickly speed up starts at its regular speed right from the start! Am I going crazy?!

I don't exactly see why everyone thinks she's such a hard EX-Boss.
I think it took me less tries to beat her than it did Suwako. To put it in perspective, I've still yet to even get close to beating Alice or Rika, but Mugetsu and Gengetsu took me like 4 or 5 tries in subsequent nights to beat.
