- This is the Extra Stage theme from Touhou 5: Mystic Square
I wrote a bloody long story called Alice's Adventures in Gensokyo and it doesn't fit in the description box. I am sad now TT__TT

honestly, much of Alice's entire character is one of the few main plot holes when considering the fact that technecally, the PC98 era is indeed canon (and hinted to quite often in print works)
of course, as with what ZUN said, in the case of a contradiction, the info that came out later in correct
And IIRC, Alice is already a yokai to begin with, as she's encountered in Makai

I feel like I've heard this melody before. I showed this to my mom and she also thinks this melody is familiar.
I also showed this to my non-weeb friend and he also felt like he remembered it.

Who could the grandma figure be? I'm guessing it was her friend after many years of the event, speaking her experience in disguse of fairy tale. Or perhaps it just Shinki? Or the figure is actually Alice herself? I don't know how I've this thought in mind at first.

I got to the danmaku battle and was reading the dialog between the characters when suddenly 0:53. Almost started crying lol. IDK why, normally feels don't hit my tear ducts that hard.

I've played only two extra stages(I suck at touhou, LOL) this and the Lotus Land Story one.
I found this very easy, i don't know why, the only insane thing was when i reached Alice.

Flandre is pretty hard too, but doesn't seem to be as hard as the three mentioned above
This song has a sort if magic to it. A magic that brings out memories you dont have. Nostalgic memories of a warmer, simpler life that you wish you could return to.
Well, Gensokyo IS a wonderland to people like Sanae who come from the Outside...
We have Alice, the White Rabbit (Two, actually: Reisen and Tewi), Orin or Chen could be that cat, and Remilia's basically the Queen of Hearts (Blood, but who's counting), so all we need is a Mad Hatter and we have a full parody.
Eirin is clearly the mad hatter.
I've been thinking: Yuyuko almost never speaks directly, and she has a thing for her tea. She also tried to bring poisoned sake to the feast in Yukari's story of Immaterial and Missing Power(Mad Hatter's drug-laced tea). All she needs is a hat and she's a perfect fit.
Well... definitely Suika is the Mad Hatter (actually the Mad Oni), because Suika is crazy about sake and parties (of sake), while Yuyuko is more hidden and Eirin is more intelligent.
Yukari as the mad hatter. She's incomprehensible to most humans, she's a fairly important character, and her hat, most importantly, is fabulous~.
Also, as for the two white rabbits thing, I personally think that Reisen is more of a march hare.

Okay so I just realized something about the picture in the video. Young Alice (on the right) is reading a book with buildings that look almost exactly alike to the ones on the left, where our current Alice is. WHAT IF the book that young Alice is reading is a book of Gensokyo? O.O

It's mostly symbolic. Alice is a pupetter. Like an artist with characters. You get the idea. Lot of people think the projection of ZUN is Rinnosuke Morichika, but I think it's actually Alice. The other theory is her book, is actually the memories of ZUN about the PC-98 Era. The book is always sealed and taken personally by Alice. It is so important that she is always taking it. Think about it, it's like you kept your memories close to you but never open it.
Others hints like during PCB, Alice being friendly with Reimu but Reimu could not remember. Alice, is by definion, bizarre.
She is the best symbol of fantasy too, with "Alice in Wonderland", so it's quite important.
Team Shanghai Alice. Team first, characters second, and the artist last.
Hoewever the word "Team" is first, so we can assumre ZUN see his characters as partners of his own team. It's not just puppets or characters anymore, but something "true" to him.
There is a fantastic essay wrote about the first CD too :

ZUN has previously said in interviews that his favorite character and the one that holds a special place in his heart is Reimu. I never knew the reason why it's called "Team Shanghai Alice" but he has mentioned that one of the most enigmatic characters in Touhou Project is Alice.

Now that I think about it, if Gensokyo is simply a dream in Alice (Or Reimu's) imagination, that would explain the change between PC-98 and Windows, since the characters growing older would explain the setting becoming more mature, the story getting more complex, and the music and colors increasing in quality.
That could actually make sense though
You could basically say that about any story. Due to the many crazy things that happen in fiction, you could say that it's all a dream and everyone would be none the wiser. In fact, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Alice in Wonderland fully run with this concept. So who's to say this isn't true when applied to other wacky video games or movies.

Weird, I like the stage themes (this and Romantic Children) more than Alice's actual themes (Plastic Mind and Grimoire of Alice). I think it's the build-up.

Alice’s music from this game is so good, and just makes me more and more curious about her character. How did she get so strong so quickly? When, why, and how did she reject humanity to become a magician? All interlaced with sad and nostalgic music interlaced with discordant (not sure how else to describe it) harmony.

I think that part of the sadness in this tune comes from the fact that this is the last stage in PC-98, it just sounds melancholic, sort of like it's saying goodbye to an era that will never come back. FeelsSadMan

Beacause th05 Mystic Square is the last PC98 shooting game before moving on Windows Touhou.
This sounds like an end of a tragic fairytale, which seems pretty fitting.
Years later, but my experience with this theme is: Bruh, this theme is mystical, even if it's the first time you hear it, you feel like you have heard it before, giving a weird feelings of nostalgia...
When i first heard this theme i was like: Where have i listened this before? It was a good theme dude", then i realised i have never listened it till those times o.o Maybe the rhythm was familiar from other touhou themes or something like that, but it's still...

Its sad the story....but cool at the same time
It's hard for me to revisit these uploads because teenage me already left his mark in the comments and I can't help but burn the Library of Cringe that I've built up over my years online, but by some miracle he didn't touch this one, so it's time for adult me to gush a little about this track.
I have quite a few favorite ZUN tracks from this era, but this one will quite literally never be beaten by any arrangement ever. Dichromatic Lotus Butterfly has gotten some arranges that are so magical they make me cry, and that's my favorite ZUN song. But this one has such a *specific* vibe that will never be beaten by anything other than its original form. This song takes everything I love about PC-98 FM sound and cooks a masterful dish with it. I don't envy the task of any arranger of this theme thinking about even coming close to living up to the original. A more impossible task I've never seen.
i think ZUN has big theme on the world he had created. Zun really likes the old times, the classic. Gensokyo is based on feudal Japan, which consist of forgotten gods and ancient culture. He reference old literature like Agatha Christie and this song Alice in Wonderland. I dont know. I kinda see him as a romanticist.

I swear I've heard the part from 0:52 to 1:47 before I ever knew what the internet was i fricking swear, help me, was that song featured in film Alice in Wonderland or where? WHERE? I'm losing my mind over this! I feel like it's from an old cartoon or something, maybe even from a toy that I got when I was a toddler or older

I was thinking about how the characters in retro era mostly never made it to the windows era, most of the danmaku in retro era is insanely hard and fast speed, i guess most of the villains were banned or sealed from gensokyo cause they intended to break the rules of danmaku, like Junko did.
Yeah, Touhou 4's extra stage is just brutal, and i guess i know why. The music was solid, but It's like the game was pushing me to my limit like some kind of Dragon Ball anime. I died on the white orb midboss anyway
It sounds like what Alice would feel after leaving Wonderland for good and having to somehow return to a completely normal life for the rest of her days... Although Wonderland sounds pretty unpleasant, it would be traumatic for the one place where magic is real to disappear from you forever.

Man I just came here because I listened to the Yuuhei Satellite cover, but damn this PC-98 theme of Alice seems so majestic and emotional in the same time like damn.
Wait a minute. This song is emotional. This theme plays in Mystic Square. The last stage is the Mai Place wich we also can see in UFO is in Mystic Square. And the boss theme there in UFO is emotional. It is even called Emotional Skyscraper. Illuminati and proof that PC 98 and Windows are in the same era confirmed!!!

I've always thought it's kind of funny that my three favorite themes in Touhou are all Stage Themes. This, Alice Maestra and Last Remote. The hidden gems, I suppose.

Maybe the PC-98 era was a time long before the Windows. Byakuren should have been in Makai in MS, but she wasn't. Maybe PC-98 takes place before she got sent there? Reimu and all the other characters from PC-98 are just ancestors to the windows characters. Those aren't really their names either. Maybe PC-98 is being told to us in a different point of view. So the names were made up to represent the ones in Windows. Does that make sense?
except zun already said eosd takes places shortly after ms and that reimu, marisa, yuuka and alice are the same.
