    Dana, thank you SOOOOO much for actually bringing up that bulking isn’t necessary to have muscle.
    A bit of background: i’m a former pro boxer and I’m currently a personal trainer. I’ve never bodybuilded or powerlifted but I know the concepts behind them because you kinda have to in this job. I’ve never done one bulking and cutting phase (outside of the one period where I was super deconditioned and gained fat because I was in a coma). I just train hard and properly and not undereat and suddenly 2-3 years after the coma, everyone thought I was a bodybuilder and was asking me about all my “secrets”.
    It drives me insane when the guys I work with promote bulking and gaining like 30 pounds and extreme cutting because “you can’t condition yourself without it” , so I’m really happy you’re not spreading misinformation. This is why I love your channel. ❤️❤️

      I have had younger friends in the past that just wanted to get huge out the gate, cause they are very thin. I saw how frustrating it was for them. This is a tactic that i believe was used, but never felt like it was safe. Ironically now some of them are overweight and not lifting anymore.

    • @Fullyautomagic
      @Fullyautomagic 3 года назад +1

      @@blackcanyongarage I did that. I was 135 and bulked to 200 in a year and had more body fat. 4 years later I’m 200 and lean.

    I love this! Thank you! Less than a year ago i was almost 170lbs at 5'3. I have very high BP, was hospitalized many times even life flighted for it,it was in the 200s a lot. As an EMT i knew it wasnt good lol. Im 41. I've drank nothing but MT dew since i was a kid. So i cut down, I'm at 1 can a day and dont drink it all. Last week i hit my goal weight of 125,actually im at 121lbs. Few months ago i started working out at home & lifting lite. I saw lots of progress, the tummy tuck I've dreamed of for 10yrs, i wasn't dreaming about it daily, so this week 3 days ago i joined my first gym. I have skinny legs, no bum,but a mommy belly,& it hangs some over a c section scar... i watched this because i think i need to bulk, i dont eat great,i eat 1 meal a day & if i snack its nothing healthy. I cant imagine eating even 3 meals a day let alone 6!! So bulking for me is way harder than a diet would be😫🤣 2 weeks ago I started eating more,oatmeals,protein powders, lots of chicken rice etc. While struggling to decide if i need to bulk i found this video & im going to take your advice. Just go to the gym,see what happens,stay consistant. Etc

    I’ve found that for me summer is easier to “bulk” or work on strength because farming is so physically demanding that time of year. It’s like CrossFit every day. Especially for a 50 year old gal like me. Winter months I can focus more on diet and my body.

    Love the main gainer! That's my MO too. I don't need to loose weight and I don't want to bulk because I can improve without it - and who knows how long it would take me to loose the weight once I've packed it on! I don't want to eat sad chicken all day to loose ten pounds I didn't need to gain. I've been calling it a slight recomp - just slowing lowering by BF% by increasing muscle, decreasing fat, and keeping weight steady.

    Love you Dana! Quarantine has seriously thrown me off. I used to work out 5days a week, and now, I haven’t worked out since the end of May. I feel like you always put a little fire under my ass and make everything seem doable again. You’re amazing! ❤️

      Kathryn - you can do this!! Plenty of bodyweight workouts out there. (So not trying to sell anything), but I truly care about people, my online fitness coach is having a free 5 day challenge starting next week. I started that way and 10 months into it, I’ve melted away 50lbs of fat. From dad bod to oh my God. Lol
      But seriously, weather it’s my guy or someone else, you got this and can get back to the gym at home without equipment.
      I personally find bodyweight workouts more difficult than weight training.

    I'm a beginner and this video makes sense. I guess I'm a main gainer bcz I cannot eat more than 1400 - 1600 calories or cut it down any less than that. I don't have any show or wedding or anything like that. I just started weight training about 3 months and enjoy it. You're right about gaining muscle early in the journey and its very encouraging to continue with it. This video was very helpful for people like me. Its good to hear a woman's perspective and why women don't like to bulk in general.

    This is extremely helpful and informative. I'm in a deficit at the moment as my wedding is coming up but I've now realised I've probably cut out too many calories too soon whilst adding in lots of cardio. This will definitely help however in the future!

    The bulk and cutting tips reinforce what I have been doing for the last 17 years, especially in making gradual changes to the diet and cardio. The only thing I don't do anymore is working with a nutritional specialist. I don't compete and after working with one early on for a couple of years, I know enough about my body to do it myself and not pay for advice.

  • @aaron1232006

    General rule of thumb, start with bodyweight training, then bulk with a 5x5, then cut with bodybuilding training. Rotate every 4 months. Thats my take on training.

    Dana!!! Absolutely love your content!! I’ve learned quite a bit from you ❤️ We NEED more women like you out here giving fitness advice.
    One thing I noticed, however. The after burn affect (for those who may not know, the calories that continue to be burned throughout the day as a direct result of cardio exercise after the exercise has stopped) lasts longer after a steady state rather than High intensity.
    Please correct me if this is incorrect, but I’m pretty sure I am correct. 10 mins of HIIT vs 1 hour walk, for example.
    Regardless, you rock!!!

    I feel like main gain is completely doable because really, your maintenance calories would be a helluva lot lower if you weren’t working out like a pro. If you were sedentary for example, your maintenance calories might be 1800. But you’re burning 400-500 calories during your workouts so you bulk by adding that back and eating 400 surplus for example, and turn that into muscle. That’s the way my brain works anyway. Loved the video.

    • @patrickoconnor1218
      @patrickoconnor1218 4 года назад +1

      Do what works! 😁 but for me after reading this I think about it depends on your goals and timelines.
      But again, do what works!
      If fat loss is the goal, depending on how much surplus you are in during your one week per month bulk. That one week is very likely wiping out two of the three weeks of your cut that month.
      So effectively, you could very well cut for one week and then go to maintenance for 3 weeks and have the same outcome as cutting three weeks and bulking 1 week.
      It’s all about calories in calories out. Basically nutrition and cardio are the most easy and safe to influence.
      Maybe Dana could chime in. Dana mentioning seeking out a professional is exactly what I did and still do, highly recommend!

    • @beautifuldreamer0811
      @beautifuldreamer0811 4 года назад +1

      @@patrickoconnor1218 fat loss is not a goal of mine, I have to really push to gain properly. That one week, I just add about 500 calories to my breakfast, and a 2pm protein shake. I have been doing it for a while now and continue to see good results, plus my body responds favorably the week after and I can continue to push myself in the gym, when otherwise it would be fatigued. I am certainly no expert, but I have tried so many different ways to manage living with chronic illness and this just seems to work, at least for now. We are ever adapting creatures, so I am sure at some point I will head in a different direction. Thanks for your advice!

    I always wondered if there would be a way to grow muscle while not putting on so much fat. I feel like I’m doing it right now like how you described in the video

    SO, would you say a good mixture of progressive overload and hypertrophy would be a powerbuilding progream?

    What about a mini cut of 2-4 weeks, done aggressively? You can lose a lot of fat quickly and have a slower reverse diet phase after that.

    Love your videos. As a somewhat intermediate who wants to at a point in the future compete in womens physique, would you be up for doing a posing video, with hints, tips, visual and physical cues to help someone like myself on the way as I'd rather start practising posing very early on to get it spot on when the time comes to compete. Xxx
