I had a neighbor like that witch. We had a burglary where they stole my Dodge truck. A week later it was recovered with $8000 damage done to it. We immediately had a 6ft rod iron fence and security cameras installed around the perimeter of our property, iron bars installed on the windows and side door on the garage in back along with a alarm system. The witch across the street called code enforcement and lied about our electric gate opening "out" towards the street. When code enforcement notified us I requested them to come out and not only verify the gate was not opening "out" but also insisted they walk our property with us to verify everything we've done was by the books...permits drawn, and everything completed to code. The witch is the typical busy body, in everyones business kind of nuisance neighbor, so to shut her down do a one and done visit. The day the code enforcement agent came out we also had the contractors who performed the various jobs out as well. No surprise we had no infractions. Upon leaving the officer assured us if the witch called them again with another false report they'd threaten her with a fine. Thank God she eventually moved.

Those of you complaining about code enforcement have never truly had bad neighbors… I felt the same way… until I had bad neighbors. A section 8 renter moved into a house next to me, they brought a HUGE dog that barks and howls ALL the time and a HUGE trash pile. Now if you have a huge trash pile and a dog outside all the time, the food is outside all the time too, so you’ve give rats and other wildlife food, water and a place to stay. I setup a camera, I counted at least 8 rats in the frame of the camera at any one point in time… they have a pile of tv’s, 3 mattresses that are all chewed up and have hole, bits of furniture, an office chair oh and probably at least a year of dog poop, the stink is horrible. It still isn’t resolved but the city did get the landlord out to the property and the landlord came and spoke to me and said he definitely sees the issue and will take care of it shortly. So I’m glad we have avenues to sort some of this stuff out without having to go to court. Court isn’t in everyone’s budget and most attorneys won’t do contingency unless there is a big settlement to pick from. In California trash and debris on properties can get your homeowners insurance cancelled, insurance companies are using drones, our houses are maybe 15 feet apart, I don’t want these mattresses and old furniture getting my insurance cancelled. The dog poop, there are articles about how toxic dog poop is. Literally there is a TON of it, the flies, the smell, omg it’s terrible. Rats chew thru wiring in cars and are destructive to homes and stuff and carry diseases, I don’t want that 8 feet from my house. So before you all are quick to want to dismantle a system, code enforcement CAN have its benefits, most people can’t afford to go to court for this stuff and we do need to be able to life safely and healthily in our homes, so if you dismantle the imperfect system, next thing you’ll be doing is crying when a bad neighbor finally moves in and you have no resources.
