    My dad passed away last Saturday and he had been turning for 10+ years. Went in his garage and found a bowl still on the lathe that he hadn't finished. Plan to finish it for him. Hope to be 1/100th the woodworker he was. New subscriber here. Look forward to watching more videos.

    This video oozes quality! The microphone, lighting, camera angle - the workshop is clean and tidy, ultra-clean. - With so much wood and wood-turning, i'd assume sawdust EVERYWHERE. But this... is like they cleaned it with a fine-toothed brush! The content and information is fantastic, thank you for sharing!

    I don't know if most people can imagine being 40 and seeing/discovering what a lathe is for the very first time...my mind is blown! I am shocked to have made it this far without knowing such a tool existed, and yet this explains so much about how almost every piece of furniture on earth was made... 🤯

    I was just given a lathe by a buddy who knows I like doing wood work. I've always wanted one, but obviously they're expensive tools to purchase. I just wanted to say thank you, for giving information on tools, machines ect. But you do in a manner that is not "Buy this brand only" like I see some do. "Do your own research" I think were your words. I appreciate the openness to it. I'm writing like like 1/2 through the video, but I already definitely feel like I am stickin around on this channel for a while. Thank you again for your instructional videos and sharing your knowledge, much appreciated!!

    Thanks for the video Roger. I ordered a lathe and toolset yesterday, arriving in a few days, so Im browsing for beginners guides and found you. I dont yet understand all the holding methods for workpieces and was curious as to what limits there were to the standard eqipment with the lathe. You have resolved that for me. I will be coming back to this when I work on my first piece to test out the various chisels etc, doing something much like your example. Yes Im a complete beginner, never used a lathe in my 64 years, but dont worry, I like to be careful and have the PPE already.
    Best wishes from England.

    I learned recently from some old fellas at a local garage how to do this. I'm going to follow a lot of yoru teachings over theirs. They are "Good Old Boys" who have done it the same way forever, and aren't keen on learning new techniques. Also, they correct me every time I call it a "chisel" and say "It's called a gouge. A chisel is something you hit with a hammer".

  • @johnbuell8035
    @johnbuell8035 2 года назад +3

    Ref the flat gouge that looks like a chisel: you warn that you can “get into trouble” quickly, and say several times to “be careful” - but you don’t explain what the ‘trouble’ is, and you don’t describe what you have to do to ‘be careful’. IOW, tell us what the trouble is that we can get into, and tell us exactly what we have to do to avoid it. ‘Be careful’ is meaningless. And we don’t know the problem we’re trying to avoid.

My chisels are going blunt very very quickly, I have started with basic low-cost chisels and i have started with 4-inch fence post so I already know im on the back foot here but what is the reason my chisels are going blunt within minutes. Is it the low cost chisels, the timber or technique or all of these factors?
