The lathe is cheap, but it punches slightly above its weight for that price. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxKGVtPhqZBB5AQXXFlU2kdd4mQhO6wlhl Its not that powerful, the working area is very narrow, and the tailstock effectively moves less than an inch. However, this is a pen lathe at its core and none of those things matter for that. This will turn pens without issue. By far the nicest feature is the adjustable speed and overall size. If you have a small worksurface this is a great option. One thing i have not seen in the reviews (maybe I didn't look hard enough) is that the tool rest has been updated for the 3421 over the 3420. The tool rest can now be set to sit well below the center line of the spindle. Given this was the largest complaint the community seemed to have for the 3420, I'm surprised WEN doesn't include this more in their marketing material.

To note since I haven't seen it, at 9:22 you can see the chisel jump when his hand left the tool inside the workpiece causing the chisel jump, that's a great reason why a full face shield is a good call, and a learning experience of making sure you out of your work piece before you no longer have control of the tool your using

When using the skew to 'level'/straighten the cylinder, it is best used in a 'peeling' cut. Same for roughing with the SRGs (spindle roughing gouges). Start with the cutting edge high and the handle low, then raise the handle till the edge starts to cut. Essentially you are cutting on a tangent to the wood. If you are holding the tool more level you are pretty much using a scraping cut. A scraping cut does work, but almost always leaves a coarser surface, which means more sanding....

I remember reading years ago that everything that an amateur lather (ist?) produces seem to look like baseball bats. One of the first projects I had after I got my lathe was to turn legs for a table. I got it all done and put together, and it was only then that I remembered what I had read. They all looked baseball bats.
