The lathe is cheap, but it punches slightly above its weight for that price. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxKGVtPhqZBB5AQXXFlU2kdd4mQhO6wlhl Its not that powerful, the working area is very narrow, and the tailstock effectively moves less than an inch. However, this is a pen lathe at its core and none of those things matter for that. This will turn pens without issue. By far the nicest feature is the adjustable speed and overall size. If you have a small worksurface this is a great option. One thing i have not seen in the reviews (maybe I didn't look hard enough) is that the tool rest has been updated for the 3421 over the 3420. The tool rest can now be set to sit well below the center line of the spindle. Given this was the largest complaint the community seemed to have for the 3420, I'm surprised WEN doesn't include this more in their marketing material.
This guy is an excellent instructor. I would sooooooo recommend signing up taking classes. Seriously excellent instruction, printed documents and extra on extra on extra. Absolutely no disappointment
Short and to the point. Great vid.
I haven't used a lathe since 1970.
I just bought one, so this vid was just what I needed.
I was always taught when using the roughing gouge you work inside to outside.
I am new to wood working and these videos are simple and the MOST valuable to a beginner. Others, some of them, assume you know to much...this gentleman seems to GET IT! He doesn't think he is a movie star... acts like he has a brain and just GREAT, SIMPLE advise....THANK YOU....well done.
Thanks millions.
Thanks for taking the time to explain the tools.
Thank you very much for explaining the wood chisels 🎉😊
You are a very good instructor.
Thank you, so many turners just assume that us beginners know what to use for what.
I love this channel
To note since I haven't seen it, at 9:22 you can see the chisel jump when his hand left the tool inside the workpiece causing the chisel jump, that's a great reason why a full face shield is a good call, and a learning experience of making sure you out of your work piece before you no longer have control of the tool your using
Best introduction (by far) to not just a starter set, but also a good general understanding of these mysterious objects various shapes.
Thanks so much!
2:52 The sound of cutting king crab legs with scissors in seafood mukbang and the sound of roughing out/shaping/parting the poor little blank in this video are equally delicious and almost as satisfying as actually eating the legs or turning the wood myself.
Thank you for this. I just got access to a lathe, but the guy who gave me the introduction seems to know as little as I.
Making it look easy! Heheh
Thank you for the clear instruction. I appreciate how well organized it was and the great camera work. It is clear you put a lot of time and effort into making the video and it paid off.
Excellent showmanship!
Great information!
I’m a bit disappointed in myself but I learned a lot more than I imagined I would from this video, thanks for making it
Haha i respect the honesty
This video is exactly what I needed. I am a beginner who has a somewhat short attention span. I enjoyed watching your video because it is organized and informative. I appreciate that you took the time out to explain these techniques. Thank you.

This dude's clueless about turning. Get some real instruction form somebody that knows WTF they're doing/talking about.
@@sv650bighammer this wasn't a turning video douchebag, it was a video covering the basics of a starter set of tools
@@sv650bighammer I assume you have a channel that is way better than this one? Please send a link..
@@michaelr2526 When the guy is representing an organization or a publication, shows tools and "how to use them" and uses really poor technique, he exposes anyone following his example to danger. For example, when roughing, one should start in the middle, not at the far end of the wood.
I loved this video. Thank you SO MUCH. You're a natural teacher.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent description of tool basics. Thanks!
Interesting. Thanks for the information.
When using the skew to 'level'/straighten the cylinder, it is best used in a 'peeling' cut. Same for roughing with the SRGs (spindle roughing gouges). Start with the cutting edge high and the handle low, then raise the handle till the edge starts to cut. Essentially you are cutting on a tangent to the wood. If you are holding the tool more level you are pretty much using a scraping cut. A scraping cut does work, but almost always leaves a coarser surface, which means more sanding....
This video is a great "first steps" video to get the tools actually working.
Thanks for the easy to understand instruction!
Just got an old Craftsman 13 inch lathe and a set of lathe chisels. Thanks to you and your splendid instructional video, I now know what each chisel is called and the purpose of each lathe chisel. This knowledge is exactly what I needed to get started. I watched one of your safety videos first and, just like this video, it was excellent. Thanks so much for your time, concern, personable teaching skills, and the benefit of your experience. You rock!!!
Thank you very much,I needed to know how the tools are used.always with saftey very informative.
really clear instruction thank you :)
I would call this the “quick start” guide to wood turning, which is exactly what I wanted. I started watching another video that described itself as a beginner video; the guy was enthusiastic and very knowledgeable but went into WAY too much detail. This was perfect. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much I needed this lesson
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much. I used a lathe in high school 25 years ago and couldn’t remember much apart from loving it. Just bought a second hand lathe and tools. My 13 year old son is keen and this video will be great for him too.
Very nice basic demonstration and explanation George! Thank you for a great year! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones!
Thankyou. great presentation. I have just bought my first wood lathe, and appreciate your video.
Thank you for watching!
Finally found a video where a starting kit is well explained. You are not only mention what chisels we need but showing how they affect the cut.
Thank you so much.
Thank you!
Thank you for this video. Exactly what I was looking for
Very nicely done for an instructional video. To the point, understandable, little time wasted
Great video for beginners. Well I am not a beginner just yet but I have been looking into getting into he field. I make large tassels for my business and I find it hard to find good
wood turner or anyone that wants to make pieces for me. So I've decided to watch videos and learn the basics before buying anything. Anyone have a suggestion of what brand of lathe and tools to get for a beginner? I'll keep watching videos daily to get more familiar with the lingo.
Thanks for that for someone like me the basic stuff is pretty essential! Super cool!
Thank you so very much for all this information! I'm also a beginner just starting out on my late father's tools and this will really help me to work out what to do with his old chisels and if I should get myself a full set right away or not.
very explicit as well as demonstrative' . I've learned a lot. Thank you.
I remember reading years ago that everything that an amateur lather (ist?) produces seem to look like baseball bats. One of the first projects I had after I got my lathe was to turn legs for a table. I got it all done and put together, and it was only then that I remembered what I had read. They all looked baseball bats.
Thank you for sharing this is excellent information I'm surprised you don't have more comments I just started working and learning about turning and using a lathe thanks again bye for now look forward to hear from you Ken God bless
I'm so thankful for you tube and this guy

Wow that's really helpful. I just got a mini lathe to try it out see if I'd like turning and I do but the chisel set that came with it are very thin and weak. Definitely going to have to get a better set.
