- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- There are only a few main cuts in turning and 3 turning blank orientations. Success comes from understanding the grains interaction with an edge/wedge. And since there are only a few handful of tools this is an easy reach for new woodworkers. Grasp this and your enjoyment of the craft and quality of results will all improve.

Rock solid understanding and knowledge expertly explained. Thanks! I've worked with wood most of my life and have a wood science degree. Your explanation of cutting theory and practice reminds me of my student days reading McKenzie and Koch! Having just recently purchased a lathe I need to learn and practice a new skill and this video has helped enormously! Everyone who works with wood should see this, not just wood turners!
Thanks for your videos I appreciate them, i made all my chisels myself out of leaf springs from the scrapyard and lathed all the handles, it was a rewarding experience.
This goes down as one of the great videos on RUclips! To be a good teacher is a real gift, and you are a great teacher. One of the best on RUclips and so one of the best in the world. Thank you for your time.
My practice. Watch this video, go practice. Watch video again, go practice more. Repeat as necessary.
Thanks for all the great videos.
You’re awesome.
Excellent Video, even after turning for a few years now, it cleared up some problems I encounter. Will use this as a refresher as needed. Thanks!
You are a fantastic teacher, expertly explained, I've yet to turn anything , currently awaiting my lathe but learning before I start. Giving me a great understanding of tool usage.
Thank you sir
Thank you for taking the time to provide such a simple but in-depth explanation of how to use the different edges of different chisels in wood turning.
I don't even have a lathe yet but I am keen to learn. When you watch the experienced turners and they make it look so easy. But there is a lot more to it.
You have shared in one hour what would probably take years to figure out.
Thank you so much. 😊 🇦🇺
Thanks
As a rank beginner, I find that this post is the very best that I have seen. Great teaching. Thank you.
This is easily the best video explaining the difference in cuts and tools. For a nerd like me hearing the science behind each cut made it all click for me. Amazing video.l
I just started trying out woodturning and I'll tell you I've been working basically randomly. This video was the best investment of an hour! Thank you so much for the tutorial!
Absolutely great lesson.Thank you.Hello from Russia.
Worth the time to revisit this too
Best turning video that ever existed in the universe. Learned a lot!
This is a great instructional video. Not only does he explain HOW, but he also explains WHY.
Ah Ha ... this time I found you ON PURPOSE and I am glad I did!! At this rate I'm beginning to actually UNDERSTAND what I'm doing. Thanks VERY MUCH for taking the trouble to explain what is actually happening with the plane, peal, slice and scraping cuts. Please keep your videos coming!
Thank you for such an informative video. Being brand new to wood turning this was extremely helpful to understand what the tools can or cannot do. Extremely well explained greatly appreciated for taking the time to prepare this video. Thank you
Another amazing video. Ive learned all i know about the lathe over the last month or so from RUclips. Your videos are some of the best. I learned to turn spinning tops from you and those are my main practice piece. Ive moved on to small lidded boxes and end grain bowls. It's very hard to really see what people are doing in videos because so much is very subtle . This video really explains why the things ive been doing work, and why some things didn't turn out. I've had a few sketchy moments along the way, lol.
I highly recommend new turners watch this!
Thanks
Ive started turning small end grain bowls using same techniques as the boxes, with my 1/2" spindle gouge for hollowing. I hope to get a bowl gouge soon so i can try face grain bowls. 2 questions; is it possible to use the spindle gouge on the face grain bowl? And is easier to hollow face grain oriented bowls?
bagbeard yes it’s possible as discussed in video but I’d just save up for a bowl gouge and instead work spindle skills wt spindle gouge.
Thanks! A sharpening jig is next purchase. Ive been grinding free hand , getting better at it, but can't wait to try an accurately ground chisel!!
@@bagbeard I have to invest in the same.
Trying to find your most excellent beginners turners video
Cliff Dyson This wasn’t good enough?
Excellent video & great way of explaining the different cuts - turning the way you explained the 4 cuts means a lot less sanding
Thanks

This was the best tutorial I have see on wood turning. I just got a lathe and had no idea how to use each tool. This video helped me understand the tools shape and how it will interact with the grain of the wood. I was always looking for the 5-10 min. video to learn what I needed. I am glad I took the time to watch as is was so educational. Well Done.
What Shaun Hayward said ... new to this game and without good local tutors so I have been playing, testing, trying, perfecting. I guess I have quickly learnt that tool sharpening and technique are key BUT understanding the engagement of the tool to the wood and grain structure will be a game changer. Great video well shot and very understandable.
This is excellent presentation. Thank you for the effort.
I bought a tiny Chinese lathe a month ago, and (short story) just got a 37" lathe today. I found your videos about a week ago and I love the way you explain things. I am looking forward to making larger pieces this w/e. Thank you for all your efforts in recording these vids :)
Thanks
Thanks for this. It explains the details of turning without being overly verbose. Good camera shots and explanations. This is a very good instructional video. I am very grateful for people like you on RUclips. Keep up the good work!
This is the place to start learning lathe tools and wood grain. Thanks!!
Thanks
Best tutorial ever on this subject. I am an engineer first and a woodworker second, so I needed this sort of detailed physics based explanation of the less than obvious dynamics of the rotating material versus the geometry of the tool. Liked, subscribed and visiting the website. Thanks!
Another fantastically explained video. I have learned a lot thank you.
Thanks
I spent my entire career in education: you are a superb instructor. Your explanations are crystal clear and concise. Also, your camera work and board work are terrific. Powerful combination! Thanks for generously sharing your knowledge and skills.
Thanks, if only there was still a place for this kind of teaching in schools.
Subscribing to this channel is a no-brainer! Fantastic tuition👍
Thanks
Hey There, I've watch a lot of videos, I have to say you are the best. The way you teach is amazing. You go into such detail on how it's done, Thanks for all the time you put in.
Sincerely Joe Mutarelli
Thanks
Excellent presentation. Very clear and the detailed explanations extremely helpful. Many, many thanks
Thanks for aGREAT turning lesson!
Very thoughtful. Very thorough. Very helpful.
Thank you.
the best tutorial ive seen, top man
By far the most informative tutorial I've seen. Your approach and articulation of the subject made it a real pleasure to watch and learn.
Thanks for sharing some of your knowledge. From a novice across the pond.
Thanks
I'm really looking forward to trying out these cuts tomorrow. I've learned so much from this video! Thank you so much 😊
Thanks
Really great teaching tool. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. Very valuable resource to a beginner like me.
Thanks
This is a brilliant film.
Started to watch it months ago and thought, bit complicated for me, so I skipped it and went ahead and produced lots of crap work.
I’ve now come back to it as I am starting to understand how fundamental this is.
You still make it look way too easy though 😂
Thanks very much
deep but explained very well- background all woodworkers should know--thanks
Thanks

Amazing video, thank you!!
Thanks, this was incredibly helpful. Very excited to apply this knowledge.
Excellent video!
A great lesson. Thank you so much.
extremely helpful.THANKS
Excellent video, great teacher! I watched the whole video and I don't even have a lathe.
Awesome awesome video. You're the best!!!
This is a brilliant video, thank you
Well done.
Best channel on yt
your the best yet
Great Video!
Great teaching video! Really worth the time. Would like to understand the difference between push and pull cut with a bowl gouge. When you should use each. Thanks again.
Thanks, will consider that.
Bowl gouge push and pull cuts both depend on a good sharp gouge, video’s give you a good idea but you can’t beat practice practice practice ..... I prefer the skew for outside work and Bowl gouges to hollow ....
Great learning Vid, Thank you
I really enjoyed your video. Your teaching style is wonderful, you go into real detail so a beginner can understand the why of what needs to be done. However, I would offer one piece of feedback. In the beginning of the video, when you were in front of the whiteboard and the focus on the camera was on you and not the whiteboard. This made the image on the whiteboard fuzzy. The drawings are super beneficial to understand the material. Others making videos do not use the whiteboard and its use elevates your teaching methodology. Again, thank you for this video it was super informative and fun to watch.
Thanks
Very good video thank you
I don't even do wood turning or have any machinery for it. But the way its explained sure is interesting.
@ 14 min was a game changer for me
What kind of wood is on your lathe? I have a chunk that looks like it. Just trying to figure out what kind of wood. It is so dense it sinks in water. Thank you again for the great instruction.
Ни чего не понял, но очень интересно, браво мастеру!!!!!
I don’t speak Swahili.
thanks for the video
thanks great tips .
For me, as beginner, vey useful! Even my english too bad :-) Thanks a lot!
Thanks
@@wortheffort , i have got some negative experience with woodturning. That was i have made some video about my "skills" level. Would you be so kind as to evaluate my skills? A thousand thanks in advance. I tried to follow your recommendations.

Just found your videos. Loving the h%ll out of them! Buying a lathe pretty soon!
I'm half way though this video you recommended for me.. great stuff, thanks again... I'm still waiting for my lathe to arrive, i ended up getting a set of carbide tools (i know i know) but i am going to buy some nicer standard ones... was planing on going with a bowl gouge and maybe like a negative rake scraper or something first.... any suggestions on brands? I just spent a crap load of money om everything so I;m not trying to get super expensive ones, but i also dont want cheap ones
Thompson, you can get most everything you need, turn your own handles for the price of a few carbide. Might think of only getting one of those.....
@@wortheffort awesome, thanks for the advice
Can you do a video on carbide turning tools?
May i ask what brand of knives you use? do they come with the long handles or did you make them?
Muito bom esse vídeo.
Do you have a video on how to sharpen various turning tools?
40/40
Go for it.
ok
Very interesting and informative. I learned something new today
I don't have a lathe yet and I feel like I'm a better woodturner than I was about an hour ago. There is just one thing I'd like to clarify. You mention several times to always cut "towards the center". Do you mean towards the center lengthwise, or towards the center of the diameter? I'm thinking diameter but wanted to be sure.
diameter
@@wortheffort Thanks for the quick reply. I've learned a lot from your videos.
Great explanations of the different cuts! I appreciate it! At 1:05:50, is that a spindle gouge you are using or a bowl gouge? It looks a bit like a spindle gouge, but I am not sure?
thanks, spindle
What happens if you grind your tools on the side of the grinding wheel so you don't get a hollow in your tool edge or bevel?
friable wheels aren't designed or torsional force. They easily explode when you work on their sides.
I have a wood lathe in egypt and i love turning but there is no teacher to learn me I want a course with more episodes talking about wood turning like this helpful video ... because i am want to learn all tips and uses of all tools and lathe ... any one help me learn 😯
There are other videos on channel. Plus Egypt has a long history of turning I'm sure there's someone local if you look.
How does someone get into wood work? How much are the tools? If I'm interested in making kitchen tools like spoons, and also bowls what do I need to be able to do that?
See my prerequisite series/playlist
@@wortheffort awesome! Thanks a ton!
would a mastercraft chizle set work ok for this or is lathe tools completely different? I have 1/2 3/4 1 inch and another one I can't see right now
Different
Dear sir do you have these tools for sale, I am a beginner, living in Guyana, South America ,and I own a central machinery lathe but don't have the chisels, I use regular carpenter chisels but it's dangerous, so it's not in use currently
What a great video, prob watch it 2 or three times for it to sink in as I am a beginner. Thanks for posting.
Thanks
Single best woodturning video I've ever seen. This demystified so much.
What Shaun Hayward said ... new to this game and without good local tutors I have been playing, testing, trying, perfecting. I guess I have quickly learnt that tool sharpening and technique are key BUT understanding the engagement of the tool to the wood and grain structure will be a game changer. Great video well shot and very understandable.
Very good. Novice turner's should very carefully watch, listen, and learn. This video also makes you think. Signed. Novice.
Your videos have been so tremendously helpful. I genuinely thank you for putting in the time to teach these things.
Again! So thorough, which in the end makes it so clear. I'm learning so much from these turning lessons. Thank you so much for doing them.
I have a DSc Tech degree and I just love how you put a lot of analytical thinking on what you do. You build indepth understanding instead of repeating generic advice. I have actually wached this a couple of times. This video is phenomenal.
Sidenote: I was reading articles on wood turning and the skilled makers said there are two different cuts... I was like nope, four! It is really rewarding to learn the techniques as now I am experimenting with different woods. If the wood is not dense enough for one type of cut I can switch to another technique. Also understanding what happens where the chisels touch the wood allows changing the angle and rotate the tool without too much thinking. I take a bowl gouge and turn it sideways instead of using a roughing chisel. I rotate it to scrape a U-shape, and so on. Most rewarding was that I finally became friends with the skew yesterday. It takes a bit more power than the other chisels and it is necessary to understand how to use the pressure so that you don't push in a way that makes a catch. I was able to cut very straight end-grain surfaces freehand to glue different woods together without sanding.
An hour+ video for me as a newbie that I felt I learned something all the way through and enjoyed watching. No wasted words. Very well presented.
Finally, someone puts 'cutting' in plain English...thank you.
I agree this was very helpful video adjust started to use ale the know-nothing this is a very helpful and education how long have you been using a lathe?
ByForNow
Ken
Couldn't agree more.
Great explanatory video!
Very helpful!
It's like a kind of collge lecture.
Easily understandable :)
Thanks for sharing experience of your professional wood turning!
Thanks
The best video i have ever seen related to woodturning ! Great explanations, looks like I now understand what I was doing the last 10 years 😁
Many thanks from Germany 👍
The video transform theory into practice and vica versa
The best video i have ever seen related to woodturning Your videos has been a tremendous help Thank you so much Cheers
Once again a super informative video. You are a master communicator (and a pretty fair turner to boot 😀)
Best video for learning about physics behind turning! Best man! Thanks so much 🙂
I watched several “Lathe basics” videos before I found this one and boy I’m glad I kept searching. If he’s not a teacher he should be. This was the most comprehensive easy to understand nuanced approach to showing not only what to do but why you want to do it this way I have ever seen on any subject on RUclips. I immediately became a subscriber and look forward to all your other videos.
Agreed. Very informative.
Very informative video! Many others (including some from woodworking magazines!) often say "do it this way" with little or no useful explanation. THANK YOU for explaining WHY we should "do it this way."
Superb! Every question, every confusion I had about turning addressed and answered. Great tuition as always, many thanks.
Amazing video, showed me everything I do wrong... and it's a lot lol. Thanks so much 👍
Thank you. This is easily one of the most useful videos on the internet right now!
I agree, very well done. I am a slow learner so I need to watch a few learned so I had to watch several times and enjoyed each times. Very well presented,
Man, I think you for teaching these fundamentals. It's just what I needed.
Man, I’ve just watched you for 12 hours, and I’ve learned more than in the last 2 years! Bravo!
