    In this video: Finally! After buying the bike in 2018, I've finally got around to restoring the Rockhopper! I made a a dating mistake at the start, mistaking the colour scheme for an 88, whereas that scheme continued in to 89 BUT it's all sorted now and the bike is a beauty regardless of year. I still need an 88 though...

    These late 80's/early 90's MTB's just hit a note no other bike can hit. Brilliant as always!

      Agreed. I also have had a 1989 rockhopper comp since 1994. I purchased it from the original owner. That time all of the color waves were becoming darker and graphics were more earth tones. When I got the bike it felt so good... I had never owned a bike like it before. I really wanted a more modern bike at the time and I thought that the hot pink and teal graphics looked a bit ridiculous in the mid-90s. However in retrospect I am so glad that I kept the bike. It hung on a wall from 1996 until 2008 when it was moved to my brother's climate-controlled basement. in 2020 Summer during covid I returned to biking like so many other folks. I fully expected everything to be worse for time but to my surprise and happiness, it road just like it did back in the day.
      I'm so grateful to see such Loving Care go to somany classic bikes on this channel.

    I loved watching the transformation of this bike. It looks amazing now. I have a Rockhopper 2001 and still ride it regularly. Ive had it 21 years and its still going strong. All ive had to replace is the pedals, saddle, and tyres. Deore LX group set, Judy rockshox forks. Still in pretty good condition, absolutely brilliant bike for what I paid for it.

    This is another level. I've been restoring older mountain bikes for quite a while now, but I've never had the budget to do an entirely new paint job. I applaud you for trying your best to keep it bone stock as possible. Great work!

    I scored on a barn find locally in northern california, two of these, same exact color, one in a 26 inch and the other in 24, the guy i got it from said he bought it for his children, they took it around the block once, and were then sitting in a well kept garage for over 30 years, they didnt even have dust or spider webs on them. Original tires werent even cracking, dork disk is still clear. Wheels have absolutely no brake wear marks. Only flaw was, i rushed them home on my bike rack, and now there is a little rubbing on one chain stay of one bike and on the fork of the other, party foul on my part. Love your builds, keep it up.

    Love this build. I just picked up an 88 that’s all original. Your bike is really close to original and if you wanted it perfect, the pedals were originally black plastic Specialized pedals. The bottom bracket was the older cage bearings with axel and cups. The saddle was a plain black Specialized saddle with a red S logo on it. All are reasonably priced, but like I said, your bike looks amazing as it is now. Thanks for sharing.

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  2 года назад

      Thanks. Yeah I know the original pedals. I had them on a standard rockhopper. They’re bloody awful though 😂 I do have the correct saddle though. It’s in the catalogue on retro bike.

    Glorious Build! Love the '89 Rockhopper Comp! Do you have a Patreon?
    I also have had a 1989 rockhopper comp since 1994 or so. I was a sophomore or junior in high school andI purchased it from the original owner. At time all of the colorways were becoming darker like the music and fashion and I thought that the hot pink and teal graphics looked a bit ridiculous in the mid-90s (they would have been fine up until '91 when Teen Spirit hit the airwaves) but it had such a premium feel and my budget was about $100
    I had never owned a bike that had such premium feeling drivetrain. I loved looking at all of the cast aluminum bits and pieces... I honestly never wrote it much and it usually rode up and down the street with friends instead of on many trail.
    My buddy's Giant Rincon had trigger shifters but his bikes forks also bent on just a few jumps.
    I am so glad that my dad & brother kept the bike even whenmoved out of the country for over a decade and it hung on a wall from 1996 until 2008 when it was moved to my brother's climate-controlled basement until 2020 summer when, during covid, I returned to biking like so many other folks. I fully expected everything to be worse for time but to my surprise and happiness, it road just like it did back in the day.
    My daughter loves the way it looks. And she also bought her first vintage bike (1999 Stumpjumper Comp).
    I'm so grateful to see such Loving Care go to so many classic bikes on this channel! I hope you get a patreon together and I hope your community will keep supporting the work you do so well.
    Some little notes about mine:
    Mine was rolling on the original tires until last summer 2020. Those tires were specialized branded UMMA GUMMA. Mine still had most of its tread but the sidewalls were rotted.
    It was a bit painful to watch you slice those original grips off (mine has the same grips and they are actually still spongy) but I know that's what you usually do and the Ritchey ones are a close match.
    I'm so impressed to see you sourced and original seat and did your best to get the original style headset.
    I can confirm that is the same type of seat I had. It was almost perfect but so painful so I replaced it with a 1994 specialized with a bit of cushioning ( I did hold onto original seat because it was in such good condition and I thought it would be good to put it back stock but finally gave it to the Goodwill sometime in 1998 or so unfortunately. Whoops.
    again I'm so happy to see this building so glad you are documenting your labor of love. glad to see you're doing Amazon affiliates and I do hope you get a patreon together too.
    ++++ Great post from RetroBikeUK++++
    "From a historical perspective, the 1989 Rockhopper Comp is arguably the best value XC Racing Bike in the company’s history. With the exception of the rims, tires, headset and paint scheme, the Rockhopper Comp was identical to the Stumpjumper, and compared to the Stumpjumper Comp the difference was frame tubing, vertical rear dropouts and Deore XT components. The Rockhopper Comp, Stumpjumper and Stumpjumper Comp had identical geometry and the difference between Deore II and Deore XT was mostly cosmetic and price. By todays standards with all the different component groups, options, frame materials and geometries, the price between a Rockhopper Comp and Specialized’s top XC racing bikes is several thousand dollars versus the 1989 difference of a couple hundred bucks! During 1989 and beyond, technical advancements, component groups (Shimano went from two to six groups - Deore II became SLX) and options exploded in diversity and price which stretched out product lines and overall bike costs leading the Rockhopper Comp to today’s current position - still a great value as an entry level XC race bike, but not the lofty height of 1989."

      I'm pretty sure these are decals that he purchased. They are impressive. it appears that he put the decals on without clear coating which is what specialized did during that year. Decals are exposed to the elements and more prone to tear off but it is period correct. I have similar original decals on my 1989 rockhopper comp in the yellow colorway

    How have you been liking the Panaracer Smoke+Dart combo? Do they by any chance handle somewhat like modern compound? To me, they look like an interesting balance between old and new. I quite like especially that the tread pattern is much more aggressive than what you'd see on most 26x1.95-2.1 offerings, considering those are generally in the fast-rolling XC category. I'm replacing a modern set that's dry-rotted, and naturally I am wondering whether I go modern or classic. I take it modern may be more comfortable, at the cost of having less aggressive tread -- but I very much would like to know what your opinion is.

    Great bike and very nice video! I would consider going completely tubleless and using a hollotech bb, but the bike is just renewed and wonderful

    Nice restoration as always and no Dis. to yourself MS but the pro paint job stands out a mile. If your struggling with views maybe mix it up a bit; you haven't done a road m/c for a while and what about that belt drive you hinted at?

      I do have a road waiting in the wings. I just need to repair part of the paint I messed up... The BSA Twenty too. That's close on the list of things to do.
