If you play this game again, might I suggest hiding / not knowing the characteristics? So you'd only know the occupations, and you have to determine which to keep, and afterwards you look at the characteristics and see how well you did. Like add 'serial killer' or 'necrophiliac' and hope the people you chose didn't have those characteristics.

I'm a medical student and that argument against the nurse confused me... Why couldn't they pick both the doctor and nurse? If I had to pick one, I'd much rather have a nurse with practical knowledge and experience rather than a doctor who probably wouldn't even be able to do his job very well due to his phobia...
plus being in a bomb shelter you have limited supplies so having a nurse who knows the basic stuff that is necessary but not over the top is better than a doctor who, in a bomb shelter situation, would be limited to the abilities of a nurse while also being unable to function

Yes! Also unfortunately, I think there's a huge misconception with nurses and doctors that most people fall prey to and then jump to conclusions about: nurses don't have the knowledge doctors have, therefore they aren't as 'qualified'.
And my arguement to this is that nurses ARE extremely knowledgeable. And I would go as far to say they actually know their patients better than doctors half the time. (In large hospital settings at least. Not as much private practices, since in private practices the doctor spends most of the time with the patient, and the nurse or assistant only checks them in.)
But I also think that Julien may be thinking of surgical situations, in which case the nurse wouldn't be able to help with.
Although, to be honest, in their situation, I would rather have both the nurse AND the doctor. Because both are extremely helpful and would be able to assit each other in emergency situations.

I think that the nurse with puppies deserved to be in the shelter, because sometimes the doctor could use her help, especially if he's triggered by the shelters size and if we are talking about a whole world being destroyed, having dogs is a good thing, cause there would be no animals

I think the masseuse could easily be out. also the doctor can't operate in a shelter and considering the claustrophobia I don't think he would be of much use and a nurse would,and since we're having a lovely discussion here, how big is this shelter? if it can fit 12-13 or even more people (maybe even a horse) :)
Also, the orphan child that pretends to be a cat could be autistic. So when they're older, it's just part of that instead of being just completely totally whacko and disturbing. I think the orphan cat should replace the sexy preggo lady. The chances she and the baby would survive are low and it they do, the baby would cry a lot and need fed a lot etc. But also if the orphan is so autistic that they pretend to be a cat frequently even in their 30's, you probably have to assist in taking care of them a lot, so I feel like they both would be hard to handle in a bomb shelter. So the nurse should replace them both.

THANK YOU! sorry Julien but you don’t know what your talking about here, a doctor who can’t even treat his own claustrophobia won’t be any help at all compared to a Nurse and also you can raise the puppies to hunt for you and if you had chosen the horse you could have eaten it and/or fed it to the dogs. (Sorry Americans and vegans)
That doctors number one phrase uttered would be “I don’t know! My nurse usually does that for me!”
Lola D I understand where you’re coming from but your information about nursing is inaccurate. Licensed practical nurses learn a LOT more than “basic first aid.” People tend to discount them because their schooling isn’t as long, but they’re still nurses at the end of the day. They sit for the exact same tests as people who are getting their RN, BSN, MSN, etc. If anything, it’s more impressive because they have a year to learn what everyone else is learning in multiple years. RNs have an associate’s degree. BSNs have a bachelor’s degree. Your statement that the most advanced nurse has “only” 6 years of college is also incorrect. Nurses can receive their PhD which takes longer than that. Also do you know how much you learn in one year of nursing school, let alone 6? They’re not just handing out degrees.

I would've said no to the botanist. I think Julien underestimates the horrible potential situations that can be caused by a violent drunk.
Yeah, just him being a violent alcoholic is a pretty big danger. They're in a bomb shelter during a Nuclear War, which is already very dangerous and scary, so adding more danger to that is just asking for a bunch of deaths. Same for the Mayor meth-addict.

@@kiaraprabhu7080 Without going into much detail about it, nurses tend to have more knowledge about general medical practices. They have a broader amount of knowledge about multiple things, whereas a doctor will be more specialized. A nurse will be able to tell you that you have a common sickness but an Immunologist would be able to tell you specific details about that, where it is coming from, different forms a treatment, etc. With that said, nurses can also have specialties such as specifically being an ER/Trauma nurse.

As a nurse, I give julien a pass here bc he most likely hasn’t had a reason yet in life to learn/experience the difference between a good nurse and a mediocre doctor...not to mention one with debilitating triggers 😂😂😂
Anyone else here would 100% have kept the nurse with the puppies?? Espec since Julien got his own special pick and Jenna didn't. I think dogs can be such valuable members of the community, both as friends and they could even be trained to like hunt once the outside world becomes available again, or attack intruders if they'd ever make their way in there. Also a nurse can still do loads and loads of basic first aid!!

It does require logic haha but I will say that that probably literally did not cross their minds at all, as it didn't for me til I just read that comment. Not that's there anything wrong with it but as someone who doesn't eat meat, animals just don't cross my mind that way. Plus it's rare to eat horse in the US anyway

Great podcast. But I don't understand why you felt you had to choose between the doctor and the nurse. I feel like they would have made a great team. It would be hard for the doctor to treat all of the patients on his own. The nurse could have treated the patients that were not hurt as severely. Also, it helps to have an extra set of hands during an operation. Plus, the nurse's dogs could have been therapeutic to the claustrophobic doctor. Just saying... but other than that I agreed with most of your picks.

One night while the archeologist is hitting on the hot preggo lady saying something like “did I mention I took a test and am super smart, also I find dinosaur bones on the weekends” the teacher with scissor hands is gunna wanna help cut vegetables that the drunk botanist grew, who is now passed out from hooch, for the chef whos gunna end up getting stabbed on accident and the dr cant help him cuz hes not good in tight spaces, the marines gunna ptsd and over react to the sight of blood, the masseuse is just gunna stand there and do a jim face like “saw that coming” while the ventriloquist puts his hand up the rocket scientists ass causing him to yell out “subscribe!” waking up the drunk botanists who goes on a rampage but at least julien will have a nice a haircut to watch it all unfold while jenna has on her cassette player pretending shes on a rainbow.
Why all of the other choices were the right ones
Meanwhile in my shelter, now you have a functioning medical assistant with 4 cute dogs who can provide a therapeutic comfort to everyone, it may freak out the orphan cat kid at first but eventually they’ll all get along, the pop star will ask well what are gunna do now? The musicly star with their creativity will say wanna pretend to make a music video “sure”. then the cop’ll say brb and give an eye to the lawyer to follow him because not only do they share a passion for justice but a passion for jiggling their jollys. Then felon who is used to being in a confined space and is the most reasonable one of the group because of it, not only believes he/she is a psychic, actually proves themselves to be one when they can predict exactly when the horse is gunna light its farts on fire, which they then direct through a specialized airvent the mechanic designed, and the mayor helped because of his knowledge to redirect meth toxins, which helps in the nuclear WINTER. And every night before bed as per tradition, they all show their gratitude for still being alive by joining in circle and prayer to sing kumbaya, as the homeless man reminds them how truly lucky we all are to have eachother. "yaa... and fuk j&j who didnt want us" says criminal "yaa" "group hug" "whos grabbing my ass?" asks musicly.. (all together) "mechaaanicc" "im soorrry" they all laugh "classic mechanic" says homeless guy

Can someone please tell me how or why this happened?
andrea zrnic this actually happened to me recently. I was listening to their podcast about you tubers and rights or something like that, and apparently I fell asleep listening to it. And so I had a dream about youtubers struggling about having to do everything that a group wants them to do and have no freedom, and Jenna's voice would be in my head from time to time. I can't remember what happened in either podcast or dream.
This is one of my favorite podcasts so I'm rewatching it for the 8165173th time bc I'm really scared and distraught over Trump becoming President... Thank you J & J and the dink fam for always being here for laughs and smiles 💕

I was thinking the same thing. What light, what seeds, what water? And the raging alcoholic would mean a person has to be on watch with him all hours of the day and tie him up or something. Then he won't exactly be very giving of his botanist knowledge because he's a POd raging drunk.

Yeah but to grow plants in doors you need special lights. A grow light and a bloom light (HPS) that gives off UV rays in a way similar to the sun in different seasons the spectrum is not the same as typical indoor lights, also growing indoors is not any easy process. There are many chemical nutrients need to successfully grow plants that usually come from the soil (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, N-P-K) along with making sure that the PH level of the water is accurate and will not "burn" the roots. Many things can go wrong and a drunk person could simply forgot things. The amount of food needed to ferment just to make alcohol seems to void the logic of him being useful. Just my opinion tho. :)

The mouths to feed with the puppies the nurse has ruled it out in a way. It would be ideal to have both, but ultimately I probably would have gone with the doctor in terms of the long run.

I really love hearing your guys' thoughts and opinions on things. You're both open minded and can see from different points of view. It would LOVE if you guys made a rabbit hole of thoughts. Not necessarily your opinions, but just ideas and possibilities on life. Like wtf we're all doing here on this planet, god if there is one, what the future holds, etc. I constantly think about these things and imagine you two to have some pretty rad ideas. Thanks for all you two do!
On the note about nurses, my mom was a nurse for 18 years in the children's hospital ER where I live. She has told me multiple stories of saving kids lives, she also told me the majority of the time the doctors are just there to give orders or tell them how much medicine to give (which sometimes nurses would already know). A lot of the time nurses are the ones who are doing the physical means to save lives. So IMO I think that having the nurse would be better :)

I know this might not be read but I just want to let both of you know how safe you make me feel.
I work in this HUGE building all by myself at night and listening to you guys while I work (Im a janitor) not only makes me feel safe, I feel like I have a mom and a dad just keeping their child company while they work. Listening to your podcasts makes me feel safe and its so entertaining that time passes by so quickly.

personally not a celiac, but i think it’s so fucking cool that julien shares what he can and can’t eat/drink so others who are vegan or gluten free can have a good, varied diet. it’s really helpful for those with dietary restrictions and i think it’s really admirable how he doesn’t let his diet stop him from enjoying food.

Exactly! You can have the doctor all you want but they definitely don't have the skills of a nurse. A nurse has more practical skills. Half the time doctors ask us what we think need to be done with patients anyway!
100%!!!! This frustrated me so much while listening. I had to pause and take deep breaths. I am a medical student and soon to be doctor. I KNOW NOTHING. (I know some stuff) But a nurse is a thousand times better in a practical situation - particularly in a bomb shelter!

*Nurse* : Firstly, nurses are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Secondly, her dogs are important for two reasons: A) creating fertilizer for plants/crops B) mental health support for the group.
*Doc* : Even though he will be triggered and not as mentally stable, he can teach others (specifically the nurse) how to perform surgery for emergency situations. Also he can teach about medicinal properties of herbs and their side effects. (Which some doctors do know about.)
*Botanist* : For a sec pretend they don't have a negative trait. Together the botanist and rocket scientiat could help grow and cultivate a garden/crops and grow food and medicinal herbs. The botanist taking care of the plants and the mechanic could build some type of fertilizer processor/composter, made from leftovers and dog waste (which is safe to use as fertilizer when composted properly). The rocket scientist could also build a minature irrigation system that recyles runoff/unused water from the plants. (You could just keep this person in a separate area of the bunker.... especially away from the kids and dogs.)
*Rocket Scientist* : Also, could help build an efficient solar energy system for the bunker. Help with other ways to conserve and harness energy for the benefit of the groups survival.
*Chef* : Has the knowledge to make what little food they have taste better and last longer. This will help keep spirits high in a dire situation and also prolong their food supply.
*Happy Homeless Person* : At first glance this person seems useless, HOWEVER, there needs to be someone in the group who spreads positivity and helps maintain a light hearted atmosphere! It's already a dire situation, so mental health is important for longevity.
*Marine* : They will be trained in first-aid, survival and also have a tough mindset. Also, they have a shitload of supplies. This one is a given.
*7 Year Old Orphane* : If all goes well, the entire group will survive and live for many years, so you need some younger generations in the mix. Also, it's refreshing to have a kid, since the group is mostly adults. They can help with chores too.
*SEXY Pregnant Lady* : Again with the younger and future generations thing. Also, the kids will be able to play together and be there for each other. It's also good to have a mother in the group to help care for the orphane too.
*Pop Star* : Usefull for chores and entertainment. They can also inspire people to stay fit and be creative, since popstars typically have exercise regiments they follow to stay in shape for live performances. With the creative side, they can teach the kids about music and writing songs. They can also write songs and perform them with the happy homeless person!

I have a violent alcoholic as a father. FUCK NO! Never again no matter what! The botanist is not worth the violence and dependance at all. There are enough other intelligent people in this group to be able to pick each others' brains enough to make a garden. He is not just an alcoholic, he is a person who is so deeply corrupted and angry, he will practically have no conscious at all. You would be blatantly putting, not only yourselves, but the pregnant woman and her child in serious danger. Cabin Fever would only make it so much worse.

Lucy Christine exactly I was like ranting when he said the doctor was better, love you julen but a day to day doctor just diagnoses patients and leaves. A nurse is literally a hero, they can do things like inject patients medication IN THE DARK WHILE THEYRE sleeping, I'm sorry for ranting to you but you understand where I'm coming from

A doctor can do everything a nurse can do - they had to in rotations - and knows more than a nurse, education wise. I get your point - a nurse is more practical, they do all of the grudge work thats important that the doctor isn't paid to. But a doctor knows how to do those things, just doesn't do it on a daily basis.
Nurses in the longrun are so much more helpful than doctors.

Susan Trent I'm totally late on this reply but I totally agree! Nurses do a lot of work they don't get credit for. While I appreciate nurse's and doctors cause I could never do their jobs cause I hate people, I've had some pretty dumb doctors. Ever since I was little I've gotten cold sores on one of my fingers, and I went to urgent care to get a prescription for acyclovir, and he didn't believe me that that was what I needed! He thought I was pill seeking, which I know is a thing but not for antivirals? But the nurses knew what it was right away
