Canine behaviour student here: I’m shit at studying so I don’t actually know much about Pavlov’s studies besides the ones he’s famous for, but the one he was famous for was classical conditioning. Ie: make a noise and give food right after, eventually resulting in that noise triggering salivation and endorphin boost in anticipation of the food. Basically the condition stage of clicker training if you’re familiar with it.
Trick training is usually more operant conditioning (so b.m. skinner, although he kinda sucked as a scientist and mostly just republished work from other scientists). Operant conditioning is getting the dog to predict an outcome and perform a voluntary response, like making the choice to sit down when person says “sit” because it makes good thing happen, where classical conditioning focuses on an involuntary, reflexive response (salivating, shivering, anxiety etc). Also fun fact, when you’re bad at training (or just unlucky) you can create false connections that leads to dogs becoming superstitious. Like if a broom falls over when a dog sits down in a certain room and now that dog thinks it’s dangerous to sit down in that room, because ghosts I guess. So. Dogs are supernatural truthers. Im aware I’m insufferable and that nobody asked, but now you know dogs are scared of ghosts ig.

This vid inspired me to try teaching my senior rescue dog to sit - I had given up about six months after I got him because he got really stressed whenever we tried to work on it. He can now sit and lie down. I don't think he'll be able to understand much more, but he is great at those two, and that's enough for me :)

I know it's too late and I'm sure I'm not the first person to notice.
When Marbles sits down on the carpet, he does so by walking backwards with his front legs and not moving his rears, so then he trips and ends up in a sitting/laying position.
But he can't do that on the hard floor because his back paws slide and so he never reaches the point of over-balance in order to trip. He's already doing all the things he's learned in order to sit down, which is why he's getting frustrated about not getting the reward after he's walked backwards.

I’m a dog trainer. This was amazing 3 years ago and it’s still amazing now. Most people give up on training their dog after about a week. Her patience and dedication to her dogs is always so refreshing to see.
I mean honestly she’s going about it all wrong and making it harder for the both of them. And yes I’m fun at parties
I mean the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result.
If she used luring, a touch stick or a clicker he’d get it in a few days. If she used all three together he’d get it in an afternoon.

the funny thing is: marble knows the trick - you can tell that marble knows what Jenna wants because he's putting his entire upper body on the ground constantly during the training. he just really doesn't *want* to put his butt on that cold, hard ground. dogs have entire personalities, and marbles personality is: 'love jenna, but also love soft'

Agreed. My dog is the same way. She knows how to lay down, but she won’t do it on tile because she doesn’t like how the cold floor feels on her belly. We can tell because she’ll do it if you ask her twice, but she huffs and only barely touches the ground before standing again. On carpet she’ll stay laying down.
