    So this is the greatest video ever! I just bought a E36 M3 and the guy told me he couldn’t get the passenger door open from the outside so today I had about 2 hours to try to figure it out and was kinda stuck because I couldn’t get the mechanism out of the door, so I rewatched the part of the video where you showed the way the inside moves when you pull the working handle and realized that the part you showed that is the big ring being pulled by that hook type thing (the part you glued) was not connected at all!!! I reconnected them without having to do anything other than unscrew the mechanism and jiggle it around the hook. Now it works great! Thank you so much!!!

    Just kind of randomly came across this video. Good to know. Because mine gets stuck the same way, but then retracts completely after about 4 seconds. Kind of annoying but I just deal with it. Sprayed some silicone lubricant in there, but was only temporary

      That's not how to remove the external trim... There is a latch under the rubber. If you force it, it will break.

  • @tonymontana897
    @tonymontana897 4 года назад +6

    Yeah, what the others are saying.
    It will get dirty and jam up over time.
    A simple clean and re lube will work wonders.
    These items rarely fail so you should be ok.

    All I had to do on mine was spray a little bit of lubricant on the door mechanism (didn't need to disassemble anything)

  • @danc2014
    @danc2014 Год назад +1

    If you look at the door handle itself (which requires you to remove it....) That loop you put back on the door latch with tape on it, is actually bending and may fail by breaking off. You probably re bent it while replacing it to allow it to work a bit longer but with more use it will break. . Cleaning and lubrication will make the door latch work better When you lift the handle you move a blocking cam and the spring latch should rotate and allow the door to open. Dirt or miss alignment can stop this from happening. The trim is held on by a bracket you slide the bracket from the side door opening to remove it not pry it off.

      Hey you seem to be well versed on the operation of our door handles. So you pointed out the part where he put tape in the video where the handle pivots against the latch. Have you found a permanent solution or fix for the plastic clips that once upon a time surrounded the metal pivot pin of the door handle ?
      This is the reason why most door handles I see break because all the owners are overextending the door handles when trying to unlatch the lock ☹️

    I have the same m3 you have but a 99. Just now hit 100k miles and I'm beyond pissed about it. Just last year I only had 92k 😭 age is def showing these days and I'm having this same handle issue. Was on the passenger side only but I can feel it started up on the driver side too. Thanks for the video!

  • @ronindanbo
    @ronindanbo 6 лет назад +5

    You will find the problem is being caused by the door being out of line, over time the weight of the door causes it to drop at the latch end loosen the hinge bolts then jack it up a little and retighten then this issue dissapears

      also can be an internal piece in latch assembly slipped past another piece, due to wear and tear, and until the same series of operation of the key, the inside handle etc occurs to bring on the same symptoms. Nothing fixes itself

    Thanks. I was wondering how to approach getting the mechanism out, I have found that it is the little plastic bushings on the handles that cause a large part of the problems. As soon as my window parts and door clips come in, I may try doing a video

      AutOdometer that rubber on the inside of the door on top, that is covering a hole. Through this hole by using a coat hanger/ hook, you pulla slide mechanism. This releases the outside trim. It’s very finicky, but that’s the correct way.

  • @MonyetButler

    On the new replacement handles a bushing can be seen on the link to the locking mechanism which was your first thought where you packed it. It appears to be a clear plastic bushing.
    Perhaps when you reinstalled it, it moved the mechanism closer to the rod allowing it to disengage.

    • @AutOdometer
      @AutOdometer  7 лет назад

      +Philip Nguyen unfortunately it is not working at the moment. Whatever that plastic piece is I bet with the constant slamming of the door it moved out of place and no longer works

    • @onesikm3
      @onesikm3 6 месяцев назад

      Ya I wish they still sold new door handles with new bushings because it’s unobtainium and this bushings causes all the door handles to over extend and this is why door handles are breaking now way too often with age 😢

      Xxsaber_ 79xX you can start to remove the interior door panel while door is shut. Once interior panel is off you will have access to pull the locking mechanism to open the door. I would suggest replacing the mechanism completely.

    I need to know to do this on a stuck rear passenger door that wont open from the inside and outside. I'm thinking its the actuator. Car is E36 316i 1999

    • @ghighisor14
      @ghighisor14 5 лет назад

      the electric actuator has nothing to do with it , i have it completly removed and still sticks like at the start of the video ( the handles were changed cause i could,t lock the older ones at all ) , since i made the swap the handle keeps on sticking and "catching" all the way up , on te old handle mechanism they have a buna-N over the pin ... not sure it's just for dampening or if it has any value ( it should have since is way thicker with that ) , anyway i cut them off from the old handles and put them on the new ones , still sticks ... i think it has to do with the alignment od the "things that go to the left " like the guy said in the video .

      The metal is a cast pot metal and hard to repair, New ones are about $200 Used ones are also prone to fail. If you try to weld or repair the part it can fail again or in another spot.. is that worth the $200 ?/ it takes 3-4 hours work

    • @peted2331
      @peted2331 3 года назад

      No, I don't know what this video is all about but you probably need a new door handle like me. There is a broken plastic piece that ain't catching the mechanism. Its shitty, expensive and a massive pain in the ass. 160$ door handle assembly, remove your old one, hopefully you have skinny arms, remove lock cylinder from old handle and put in on new one. put new handle in door and its done. Miserable job NOTE: Most of the time its a broken plastic piece that cannot be fixed. Not a sticky mechanism like this guy has.. Honestly, the video guy probably just found out his handle is broken also.. that 'push the door' trick will only work for so long.
