This video really helped me. I got stuck at two points, however. For the hardest part at 20:00 getting the handle pushed all the way to the front, there's a little nub on the end of the door handle assembly that needs to fit into a "pocket" inside the door. If you remove the upper rubber cover from the side of the door, you can observe this through the ovular porthole. The second hardest part, I got everything together and was testing the door open/close and lock/unlock functionality and my door became stuck shut. Locks still worked, but nothing would open the door. Turns out the door handle assembly has a nub that fits into the actuator arm (into a hole on the arm) and it had slipped out, but was pushing on the arm (not allowing it to "close" or make electrical contact in the closed position) -- luckily I still had the door panel taken off and could see this. I removed the door handle and was able to open the door again.
Thank you Pamo! It took me the better part of the day, but following your steps worked perfectly! Tip to anyone trying this: take your time and if you’re not replacing any clips, plastics, etc mentioned in the video, go very slow and carefully...
Thanks for this video. Helped me get the job done in no time, despite me dropping the window and shattering it! Turned a few-hour job into three days but was overall satisfied! If you're doing this job, be sure to do all the rubber gromets including the one on your interior door handle. Might as well get it done!
You have no idea how helpful your video was to me! Replaced my door lock and handle follow your guide and i had no problems at all just a lot of sweat and i wanted to hang myself but it all worked fine at the end :) Btw my door was stuck closed so i had to remove the door panel from inside and somehow i managed to open the door by prying on the spring on the lever
Good video. I'll be using it as my guide while taking out the handle and lock. Not looking forward to this job. I've done it before on an e28 and it's a pita.
Yeah same, I like doing things myself and all, but this looks like a nightmare. I'd rather pay someone to do it properly instead of breaking something while I'm in there fiddling
Who said doing a good job was easy. My God, I started to tremble. I have a broken handle and I have to change it, but after watching your video I don't know whether to start with a retreat in Tibet🙏 to align my body and my nerves so as not to lose them ... !!! 😱😱
Great video to follow along with. Until the Allen key to remove the window bar. I used my actual Allen key set to remove, cause that torx wasn’t going to do it. Idk how you made it look so easy, cause I used the right tool and they just sat there inside of the door and spin. So I can’t get the bar out. Can’t get the actuator out. And I’m just stuck 😅
Really helpful, thanks Pamo, But if the door is close and locked can i take out the handle mechanism (without damage) to release the door locker system and unlock the door? i already take off the interior cover, and also i can take out the window!
So I’m in the process of doing this, but the only thing I’m having trouble with is the lock cylinder. Do you change that out so that it works with your cars key??
stjohn gold which spring clip do you mean - the brass one or the black rectangular bar? The brass one is fiddly... You need e.t. Fingers, the black one just gets pushed back towards the front of the car once the plastic trim is back on the outside. Good luck buddy.
Great video, The long internal lever in the door lock assembly broke. Made out of 'pot' metal so not easy to glue back together. Looking for a used one. Can anyone help? What did you do with your replaced one?
Hey dude I didnt get the bit at the beginning about the key replacement. If I wanted to change my drivers side let's say. Would be able to use my same key or would I have to swap the old key slot to the new one?
Great video! Very helpful. Towards the end where you mentioned how the rod from the inside handle came off the locking mechanism, same happened to me. Can you shed some detail on how you reattached it ? Where does it hook to on the locking mechanism?
I'm afraid that's just a case of getting your camera in there and working out which holes have no rods attached. It only goes 1 way so will be obvious when you see it. Most likely the rod that sits vertically connecting the handle to the door lock assembly itself.
im doing an r&r on my ds door handle atm... you called your door card Frankenstein... the last person who worked on my car used a beer bottle top to secure the speaker to the door card.. and gorilla gripped the material to the door handle and rather than replacing the clips they just screwed the door card onto the door frame.. what a night mare
Nahhh on mine i cut 1.5 inch, round holes on convenient places for better access; door card covers that; screw BMTroubleU,they are nuts, they think we have the whole time in the world to fix their miserable screwups,,
Thanks for the super helpful video! I have a problem with the central locking actuator on mine. Was wondering if you can remove the actuator without removing the whole lock assembly? On realoem it's shown as a separate part! Cheers
thanks, i managed to get it off quite easily as it just pops off upwards and isn't attached to any link rods thankfully. it's a stretch but do you happen to know the pinout for what each of the 6pins do on the actuator? cheers
Pamo , just wondering if you could point me in the right direction to get some selas for my beammer E36 coupe 1995 i am looking for rear window gasket seals , both sides. cheers
does any one know if I have to go through all this if I'm just changing a failed door actuator? Or is there enough room without removing the window runner etc.? thanks
Ok, great up until putting it all back. The trick is to have the actual door handle all connected to the main lock mechanism, But install it from the side, not slide it up flush as the video says. You need to slide it behind a tab, from the side.
So I have replaced the door lock from the driver side and everything works fine in that side but then when I went to drive the car I noticed that the window from the passenger side wouldn't go up or down all at once, it only goes up some inches and then stops and I have to click in the switch again and then it goes up a little bit more and so on and so on until it finally closes completely. Does anyone knows how to fix it? It must be related with the new door lock because everything worked fine before
@@ManSeeksCivic thanks for the answer I already tried that but it seems like it didn't work but I will try again. One thing that I remembered is to swap the "electronic thing" from the old lock to the new one so the car maybe works like if it had the old one
It shouldn't really matter, these cars are old enough that the microswitch es and controllers are not unique to the car. It's possible that you've just had a coincidental failure. The motor controls this action by resistance (if it sees too much - like something trapped in the window) it brings the window down to prevent damage. You could remove the motor and clean it up, regrease and see how it goes. Sorry I can't be more specific.
@@ManSeeksCivic thanks for the advices. I have to take it apart when I have time anyway it's not any catastrophic issue since it still opens and closes
@@ManSeeksCivic I just looked and the side on the gold bar is moving fine but the other side it not I don’t think I have to lined up correctly. I popped the window back out from sliders and it’s still froze up to where I can’t line it back up.
Doing this now. uck me this is a prick of a job. It didn't help that i had to pick the replacement door lock to swap locks over. Also make sure the inside guide rubber (below the door mirror ) doesn't fall out when you tilt the window as it ruins your monday evening :/
Kevin Pringle - sounds like it's not fully engaged the tangs and the handle is fouling it as you open the door. I assume you're talking about the trim around the handle itself...the one you use a L shaped bar to remove.
Thanks golfgtimm, glad I could help you out. The doorcards are awful..the plastics on the rear have completely come off the cards and have been screwed, stapled, glued and taped back together to no avail. Id be lucky to give them away when I finally change them so if you're still looking when that happens ill be sure to hit you up and you can have them.
You fucked up your door card. It's not how you remove it. You must get the inner seal off and then pop the door card off the door with a lever of some kind, and then get the other sides of, but not by pulling like an idiot. Get some tools and do it properly.
I would if I was keeping the doorcards. as stated in the video - those cards were already very tatty and a new set was on the way. I agree - the right tools are the ONLY way to remove them...The lack of tools is why we see so many broken doorcards.
This video really helped me. I got stuck at two points, however. It is down to choice. It can be the case of a lot of trouble so you can change all the locks or just keep the one with the handle and use 2 keys.

I believe they're interchangeable... But I'd check real oem to be sure
