In 2000 I met Dimebag after a gig in Manchester and asked him specifically about this. He was really kind and told me how to get the harmonic etc. Wish he’d mentioned the wah, might’ve saved me 20 years of grief 😂
LMAO a secret is a secret and who wants to be easily copied

Dime gets the question and gives the squeal lesson at 26m25s
the JP way is over rated, difficult to set up and expensive..try Dime's crybaby from hell dude, Dime told me he was working on this since the mid 80s
I was at that gig!!!! Didn't meet Dime tho 😢
He didnt need the wah, bro. He was straight up randall and pure awesomeness.
Holy Shit, I am so inspired to make videos again! Thank you Ola!
Came to the comments hoping I'd see this! Was not disappointed.
great job dude
You should make more videos, man!!!!
I learnt how to do the Dime Squeals from a Guitar World interview with Dime way back in the day. I remember him talking about how he often just had the wah on for leads - not to wah with, but to have it sit in a specific range and really focus the tone. Exactly the way you've used it here.
Me too. Dime's my favorite guitarist that I've learned from and coming from the same state. 🤘🏾
I read that article in middle school,cool...
Apperantly were old as fuck now.
Is that the Guitar World with Dime and his Trendkill camo guitar? Riffer madness I think. Awesome shit!
Yeah dimes stoner logic made it very easy for me to understand
Dime's old Riffer Madness articles in Guitar World! I learned Drop D tuning from one of those articles.
New series: Ola explaining shit.
:-D
YES!!!!!!!!
Ola cocking shit, yea
I'm waiting for
Ola taking shit
@@DominicAirola doesn't he take enough of our shit? haha
This absolutely needs to be a thing!
It’s also impossible to do Dime squeals without a proper Squeal face.
While cock-ing the wah...lol
That's the real secret. 😆

@@n7warlock22 HAH! :D
It’s absolutely necessary lol
Just started listening to pantera and as a guitar player I really admire your effort in keeping dime’s legacy alive
I wonder if a fixed wah pedal (Fulltone WahFull or CryBaby Qzone) would work better for something like this? kick it on for leads, kick it off when done. The controls on a fixed wah pedal will allow you to dial in the perfect tone to hit those high notes rather than having to use you foot to rock back n fourth...
Tell this to Kirk... 😏
Or just an EQ pedal in general would work, just boost the hi mids and scoop the rest
If you listen closely though, especially on the recording, the wah sweep is very noticeable, and very much a part of what makes those harmonics scream. I feel using an EQ pedal wouldn't give you the same deep scoop up into those higher registers you hear. The greatness of that lick is definitely the sum of all it's parts. An EQ pedal may 'work' better, but would it sound better?
@@superkillrobot did you just try to correct ola on his own channel? Lol
On my boss ms3 I have a wah toe down setting assigned to a foot switch so if I want that extra high end to do the squeals I just press it instead of kicking on the wah and risk not turning it off haha
I love your new style of content!! Back to the roots, more guitar related, less drama. Thanks Ola!!!!!
Today will be the day that there are more people simultaneously doing the dime squeal than any other day in history 🥲🤘🏽🤘🏽everyone should film it and get it edited all together 💀
Fantastic!!! Good to know. Never would've thunk it. Props to Ola for giving the guy a shoutout and link to his page! metal.
great clip... I love that Dimebag was so frequency-astute to target and narrow the guitar's output with a simple wah.
Another example of how the most elegant answer is METAL !!!
I think the key here is actually feedback into the pickups and strings, like a sustainer pickup does. You can't do this when playing/recording silently in headphones. It has to be acoustically loud in the room with the pickups and strings resonating with the feedback note from the high gain amp.
Also muting. All other strings except the G need to be totally dead with left hand muting

You can do it in headphones
I needed this. The technique is so unique and my whammy bar thanks you!!
I seriously love how much Ola just shouts out smaller channels. Another reason why we love you brOla
Ola! I love that you love Dime as much as I do! Love your channel!!🤘🤘
This just blew my mind. Can't wait to try
Thanx Ola great video 👍🏻
Cool dude! I always wanted to know about those squeals, it's definitely some different technique! Coffee is ready here! Watching now!
That “HAH!” @ 2:32 legit caught me off guard and got me😩 love the videos! I actually was thinking about buying my very first Dimebag guitar but I have no clue what to get
Awesome💪🤘
Thank you OLA
WOW! I did not know this. AWESOME trick.
Of COURSE!
NICE!
Now I gots ta trys its!
Thanks
Daaaam!!! tankius soy much! 🤘🤯
You're a bloody legend
Ha! Thanks, Ola! You're a legend
Incredible. The wha gives a sustain information
Omg i love you ola 😍
Dimebag shows how to squeal and what he uses to get those long notes. I learned this in 2005 straight from the man himself. The video is probably still online. It was for young guitar or guitar magazine. It originally was a DVD in a magazine I think or they released it after he died. Also an overdrive pedal helps with the wah wah pedal. Awesome guitar collection and playing!
Must've been 04
WOW! Greaaaat!
I'm gonna try 😁😉👌thanks for the tips
The look in your eyes when you droping the DiveBombs is the execly face when im doing it. Im just addicted to that Töne :D
Love it
Love from Australia Ola! 🇦🇺🤘🏼
Ola I would really appreciate a mention of my friend Nicky Sims from London UK she passed away recently and was a big fan of your channel and I will miss watching the Sunday show with her from now on, thanks keep up the good work
Paul
ME and my brother was watching this video and we were so amazed! I recently had my birthday and my brother got me an expression pedal so I can squeal like Dime! Thanks Ola bro!
Sweet! 👌
God damn that dime sound gives me goosebumps! 🤍
Loving the Dog hair cam!
Great content man! My son and I love watching your channel. I used to have a Dimebag Washburn, which I got from being inspired by Dimebag. My next guitar is going to be a 7 string Solar guitar 🤘
Outstanding,. Shred 4 life!!!!
I’ve been actually doing this for months now!! I had no idea dime did that too, but I discovers that it really helps the note sustain longer, and sounds hella clean
The wah, particularly that one, is also adding a huge boost to the front end of the amp or whatever it is you are using for your distorted sound.
Getcha pull!
Nice Job!
Awesome I'll try it
woaaaaaaaaaaaaah the difference was mind blowing! My brain is melting right now! I need to try this asap!
Finally, his video is going to get so much more attention hell yeah !
Very cool
Thanks :3
That cocked ("HA!") wah works a bit like a compressor that way too, as those specific frequencies hit the amp that much harder.
Michael Schenker uses it the same way to get some more sustain (but without the squeals 😀)
Cool.
Of course this would come up as we're getting ready to go pay our respects to Dime and Vinnie :D
I would really love to see a video review of this ML model you're playing right now in this video that would be killer!!!!
Dime actually made a lesson video on how he does the squeals.
He didn't mention the wah pedal lol
A fresh breeze of a Dime squeal done right is like a fresh cup of coffee ☕️ in the morning 😶🌫️😊🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
VERY cool. Going to grab my Morley!
I've had a Morley Wha since the 80's that I won't part with. Makes a great overdrive and tone control besides the obvious Wha function, but I'm pretty sure the real trick is opening your mouth just right when you pull the note up.
Badass Ola!!! Love me some tasty whammy tricks! Sounds amazing! :-)
sick
No one does it like Dime but same goes to Alexi Laiho as well. So rare to hear anyone be iconic with these simple techniques.
I do the same thing, but I have the wah running all the time, the Camo Dime one specifically because you can really fine tune the EQ, Dial out the mids on your amp a little bit, and on the pedal have it cocked all the way forward, on the range selector have it in position 1 all the way at the front, and the get some chugs going while you dial in the EQ and Fine Tuning on the pedal till it doesnt sound like its really a wah. That is what ive found to be my solution with the least amount of dancing around the pedals, that and the cocking function on my wah all out of whack so its just full bore all the time. However I need to try out one of the new black camo ones, maybe you should too
I've been doing that for years because I haven't got a booster in my pedal chain which what I had assumed Dime was using. There ya go. 🤙
Lmao this is great i been doin it without the wah getting very close to what i just witnessed but now oooo its amazing
ROFLOL!!! I just spit out my drink with the "caulking the frequencies" laugh edit.
🤘
My favorite Dime squeal is the beginning of "Light Comes Out of Black". Sounded like his guitar was screaming for its life.
Exactly, i stumbled upon the same trick when i was just jamming, even better when dime used a whammy pedal for example the solo he did when he was with damageplan
You can hear him back off the wah towards the end of the track such amazing technique
HAHAHA I laughed so hard at 2:31 😂😂Nicely done Ola!
Very interesting trick! I may or may not have done this before yeeeeeaars ago without thinking about it, but it does make perfect sense now!
Just going to point out something else to anyone who doesn't know, he also didn't have very low action either, so to anyone who thinks they need crazy low action to be able to play Pantera easier...well, this is even more testament to how great he was haha. The high action will help keep the note too as it won't "fret out" as early when the action lowers even more from pushing the bridge back👍
Thanks for that Ola, and Music Sucks!
Nice tip and nice seeing you here man!
@@Cthulhu_Awaken ha No worries man, you too! /,,/
I'm guessing its the wah pedal. Figured this out a while ago and it blew my mind
It would help with the freqs
in 1994
I thought it was a whammy pedal
@@floridianthrasher5426 the wah pedal effects the tone but the whammy peda effects the pitch. I don’t know why it works exactly but if you listen to your guitar with the wah pedal on it sounds a little extra distorted kind of. I think it’s that little extra that lets those high harmonics ring out
@@connorcostello7404 yeah
Sweet man!!!!! That’s how I used to do it. Still I sick at them. Lol!
Very cool and you can wah sweep into the squeal!
🤟🏼😎
@@R2R3Lockingnut In Dime we trust! R2
bro i've been trying to dime squeal for months and this video showed me how to in 3 minutes
Fun 😁👍
Good to see that the JP Wah can do more than keep a monitor from falling
Yo bro your guitar is amazing, I also collect the Dimebag Dean error ML's is that from the dean Factory or was that custom-made by somebody that thing is amazing
That’s so high pitched the puppy was cowering in the corner with paws over it’s ears! 🐶
Your the fuckin’ man Ola thanks for all your great content boss!
I just started using a DAVA pick that is black plastic with a metal tip and the black plastic actually has a little bit of flexibility.
Yeah I’m going through strings much faster now but the metal tones and squeals are so much easier and clearer.
Getcha pull.
JP Wah is awesome!
Ola the little dimebag 🙂🙂🤘🤘🤘🤘
Fucking brilliant
why am I watching this I don't have a guitar with tremolo. I guess I just love you Ola
2:31
nice vid 👍
I love the jazz piano in the background
maybe there's a piano player in the next room
maybe Ola will made a another video about this piano playing in the background on this video, and name it "Behind the Squeals"
It's like Dime has been resurrected. I hear it in that squeal.
I think just about all the leads on CFH were laid down with the wah in a fixed position. I had read that a long time ago in an interview with Terry Date or Dime, can't remember. They just moved the wah until it sounded the hottest. Another great example of that tone is John Sykes' leads on the 1987 Whitesnake album.
He used the wah for some and he used the whammy pedal as well for those really high squeals.
I always wanted to do this stuff
Nissssssssssssssssssce 🍻
killer
lol love it. “I tried it out, it works.” 😂
Very interesting early 90's technique! My only way was lots of gain or presence or the an active preamp, like in a JP guitar
Cheers for sharing the WeeeeOoooouu
now that you mention the wah I wont be able to unhear it when I listen to them because you totally can hear the treble boost lol
Ola looks very sleepy or kinda baked.....Just like Dimebag!! Thanks for the killer tips
Woof!
May that beautiful, beautiful man rest in peace. Gone too soon.
