    This made me think of the way that batiks or Fabergé eggs are dyed, which I think would make a super interesting yarn

    Oh, Rebecca! Considering our convo this week, I find it super ironic that I had not yet seen this video somehow and that youtube suggested it to me after today's video. This is SIMPLY gorgeous, and I'm a certain fan of the technique. I hadn't considered zip ties for the resist, but it makes SO MUCH SENSE! plus, you get larger areas of resist then I would expect with yarn ties. The only possible thing that could make this a better galaxy is if the yarn had stelina in it, but the acid might be too much for it. Gorgeous colorway, and probably the best indie dyed galaxy yarn I've ever seen.

      Oh thank you! I think you'll like the video that (hopefully - I still have to edit it) will come out next week. It is another resist one. :D
      I had jury duty on Monday and Thankfully didn't get impaneled (the case I was almost on was a multi-week trail! but My number was late the queue so they ran out of time to see all of the prospective jurors so I was excused.) so I can get back to some dyeing. :D

      I was super happy dyeing with just food coloring for years! The big thing that converted me more to acid dyes was a larger range of colors that I could use that didn't break. I still love food coloring, though!!

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials

      I wish that I could provide more swatches in my videos, however, at this time I don't have the capacity to do it. (If I'm ever able to expand the team beyond just me then this is something I'd consider!) I try to provide swatches for self striping videos because the length of the color sections makes a bit of a difference in how something will knit up. With other colorways, the way the yarn knits up will vary so much based on gauge, flat vs round, knit vs crochet, that it is hard to predict how it will look.

      It should look like a micro strip. Depending on the way it’s cast on. But another way to tell is if your making socks wrap a couple strands around you wrist. But it should be black about 3/4 sts then the color then the black. Hope that helps till a video gets released on it.

      Before I did a Christmas-tree-with-lights resist colorway, I knit a small gauge swatch on the "correct" needle size. I marked the beginning and end of 10 stitches and unravelled those 10 stitches, measured, and divided by 10. That told me how much yarn was in each stitch. I found when doing the knitting that using the exact length of yarn per stitch sometimes didn't give me a resist color that showed. It was sometimes hidden on the back side. Fortunately, it didn't matter on my Christmas tree. (My stitch length on worsted was 1" per stitch. Yours might be different. )

      Dip dyed broken violet can be microstripes on fingering weight done on socks, or more of a spiral pooling on a hat or something wider. I don't have the capacity to provide swatches in most of my videos, unfortunately.

    I am enjoying watching your videos as I get ready to do a dye day. I am an experienced dyer, but still learning. Question for you on Speckling: If I want a solid light background color with speckles of brights on top, should I dye the solid first and add speckles to wet or wait till the solid is dryer and then just mist with vinegar water then add dry speckles? TIA

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 года назад +1

      Technically you can go either way, but I typically dye the pastel color first and then speckle on top of it. Occasionally I've done the reverse - especially if it could be hard to see the speckles when wet.

    hey have u thought of laying the skeins in acircles, on top of each other then using the zip ties to get them more similar

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 года назад +1

      Yes, although with something like this since the size of the resist varies throughout the skein it would be hard to get things identical with zip ties. You would want to do smaller butterflied sections to be more consistent with teh colors.

    Was the black mark in the pan a slightly melted zip tie?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 года назад

      I don't think so. My best guess is that it was a glob of dye that got stuck or something. It did wash off. I've never seen the nylon ties melt... I suppose it is possible but I don't think so.

      Maybe, although I doubt it because I haven't ever seen any melting from the nylon. I've seen them shift their hold a bit over time, but they have a higher melting temp (i think(

    Can I use your technique in my cotton yarn?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 года назад

      Unfortunately you cannot use food coloring or acid dyes on cotton yarn. (You might get some staining but most of the color would wash out.) However, this should work with tie dye/fiber reactive dyes. The breaking might not be the same, but you can hand paint to get a fun gradient first and then do a resist layer.

    What am I doing wrong? I've only had 1 skein turn sort of purple with a break into muted purple-blue using food colouring & white vinegar. I tried all of your tips with my hand spun yarn (slightly yellow to start) but even after adding a tonne of white vinegar and simmering for nearly an hour - very little dye was taken up and the dye bath still full of colour!! I even tried adding lemon juice as a form of additional acid but still nothing. I'm wondering if it is down to the quality of food colour? Would non white yarn affect my dying? Wonder if I need to invest in acid dyes instead? any advice? Thanks

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Год назад

      Hi Mark, I'm assuming your handspun yarn is wool. The yellowish color may tone the purple less bright but it should still work.
      Double check the ingredients of your food coloring If the ingredients are Red #3 and Blue #1 then you should get a similar color. If the pigments are natural food colors then it might not work as well. The food coloing I used in this video was Wilton's Violet icing color but I did this one a few years ago so I'm not sure if they've updated their recipies at all since then.

      @@ChemKnitsTutorials Hi Rebecca - there are no ingredients on these colours! They are supermarket brand as not much else available unless I order online. The picture is sort of similar to mine but I have one skein which is a maroon and some of the others range from a violet to a very light tone. I adjusted ratios and added more acid but just wouldn't work. I then remembered I had a pack of citric acid and this did help to somewhat exhaust the pot but not fully. I also tried the Fanta trick - but in the UK they have moved most stuff away from artificial colours now and it just didn't work :( I'm going to order some proper acid dyes as I've got tonnes of fleece to work with (more to arrive soon ;). Thanks for your helpful advice.
