Please, Please, Please don't make your students paint entire scenes in one go. All my art teachers do that and get mad when colours bleed and the paintings aren't 'realistic' ? Combined with crappy brushes and crappy paint and about 45 mins for an entire portrait, everyone fails in the end so, please, please, let your students go at their own pace and let them follow this guy's advice. It's pure gold!
Interesting how your realistis portraits are always female, while your male characters are always drawn in your anime style in your recent works. Is there any particular reason for that? Or just preference?
just preference I guess xD I don'treally like the clichee infant manga girls.... but it's like some people draw only manga and others only realisic - a preference :)
Thank you for answering ^^ I don't like them either. I'm more interested in drawing and painting lifelike characters or more stylistic figures now. Keep up the good work, I love 'em ♥
There is a lot of different ways to approach watercolors, I hope I could show you mine ^^. Tell me what you want to have covered next, do you have specific questions? ..did somebody say zelda easteregg ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
you are awesome this helped me a lot ! I'd like to see something about mixing colors, I've read something about cold and warm tones but its a bit confusing...
This was sooo helpful, even if it was things i was aware of, it took me so long to figure things out through trial and error and you explain really well why certain techniques work and some don't. You also talked about pushing the paint and moving it around to achieve some effects and that was really helpful! A video more specifically dedicated to skin and then to hair would be awesome! I'm also curious about edges, you kind of touched on it but the hardest thing for me is how to control an effect where the colors softly flow and blend together and when you want a hard edge to your drawing. It's really hard tondo, even when you know about wet on wet and wet on dry.
This was so helpful. I've seen a lot of tutorials talking about painting wet-on-wet or wet-on-dry but rarely do they mention how to use the two effectively together. Thank you.
I'd like to learn about brushes and what would be the best for a beginner. Affordable as well. I also want to ask if watercolour pencils are good for a beginner or if they're more or less not.
Laovaan Wow I really didn't expect you to answer! Sweet! I might as well say I love your art and have been following you for quite some time. Thank you very much for noticing haha
Hi, I would recommend using brushes with natural hair, specifically for watercolor. I have one big one for washes, one medium with a fine point (so you can get pretty detailed and thin if you don't apply much pressure, I actually could use only that brush because it's extremely versatile and awesome) and a really thin one (like a number 2 but i don't know if brush size is a standard everywhere). The important aspect is that the brush is fairly fat (lots of strands) that gather really nicely to a thin point that doesn't fray. I have other brushes (a straight one and a rounds tip one but i never use them ^^) But I am interested in Laovaan showing us what he gets because he can master really really fine lines, and i wonder what he uses to do that.
Sky Charbonnier Thanks! Quite helpful and I do agree. Laovaan does make incredibly fine lines so I'm extremely curious to see his way to paint. I want to find my own way and it might be therapeutic to me when I do start painting.
Synthetic brushes these days do a fantastic job at mimicking natural hair brushes. My favorites are Neptune and Elite brushes from Princeton (depending on the area you live in, availability changes) that mimic squirrel and kolinsky respectively. And no animals had to be harmed in the making :) Regardless, yes, round brushes with good points tend to be the most versatile brushes, in my opinion.
Awesome! What sets this video apart from other tutorials/overviews is that you carefully walked through the application of the techniques. Most videos only show how to lay down colors. It's great to know not only the how's of the techniques but also the why's. You changed my mindset about watercolor! 😀
You are a life saver. You are the first to show a way to get that smooth gradient for skin that I've seen and really a smooth gradient for anything. I can't wait to give these techniques a try!
Excellent tutorial. I truly appreciate your talent and willingness to share it. I'm 55 and while I've been drawing for decades as a hobby, i've just recently began watercolors. Watching you has expedited the learning process. Thank you for teaching this old dog some new tricks!
Thank you for explaining when to paint wet in wet vs wet on dry!! I've watched a lot of beginner videos and I don't think anyone has explained the difference.
Thank you so much for making this tutorial! Unlike a lot of other watercolor tutorials I've seen here on RUclips that cover similar basics, but don't really apply them practically, I really appreciate that you explained how to apply the same techniques to how they work for different subjects/objects (landscapes and portraits) as opposed to just one type of drawing. Those specifics are extremely helpful! :)
I just wanted to say that I've watched a ton of your videos and something that I've always loved about your videos is that you are straightforward and patient and I appreciate that. I also wanted to say I think another reason I love your videos is your voice itself. Its very soft and very soulful in a way and makes it feel like you want to see your audience improve on their art ^^
Finally! A watercolor tutorial that makes sense. Thank you so much for posting this video. You are not only an amzing artist, but a good teacher as well.
I am a simple woman. I see Seven, I like. This was a very informative and extremely useful video - subbed! I look forward to looking through your past videos and seeing your future ones. If I had any requests for what to learn about, I would ask for the different ways to clean/manage your brush (such as when you were "pushing" color - what did you have in your hand?) or how to manage large splashes of wild, contrasting color on detailed pieces (such as your lana-inspired portrait). Thank you for sharing with us :)
hands down the best tutorial for watercolours...have really struggled with edges being too sharp or soft, other tutorials talk about water but the way u explained it with ur demonstrations just made sense of it. thank u so much for taking the time to make such informative videos.
I would like to know on how you develop your own art style, cuz some of us are having a crisis on finding their own art style and on how to develop it even further, that would be really helpful. BTW YOUR TUTORIAL WAS REALLY AWESOME!! keep up the good work we'll continue to support you!!! 👍 ●~●
Super Video! Ich würde sogar behaupten, das hilfreichste und am besten strukturierte Watercolor-Tutorial, das ich bisher gefunden habe. Weiter so! Freue mich schon auf mehr Tutorials von dir!
I would love a video on how to shade faces with different tones and depth to the shadow. I have been struggling with this allot. I have been a subbie for a couple of years and really value your info. Thanks
Ich hab jetzt schon einige Beginners Tutorials durch und fand deins mit Abstand am besten! Leicht und verständlich, aber du deckst trotzdem eine große Bandbreite an wichtigen Tipps ab! Ich danke dir sehr dafür. :)
HOLY CRAP DUDE, you just made everything click for me. I've seen a good amount of tutorials for beginners in watercolors and for the most part I understood what they were trying to say but it didn't make sense till this video. You made it so digestible and I could totally understand now how some other watercolor artists, including you, go about their paintings. I would totally tune in for this series. It makes so much sense now, completely mind blown.
This video was like an epiphany I didn't know I needed. The clouds parted, light shone, and angels started singing; and I was like "Oh damn! I got it!" Good job, man.
Although I've been using watercolor for about a year now, videos like this are always helpful! I would love to see a video on how you get so much depth in skin tones, mine always look so flat.
I find myself becoming a true fan of your work !! And your genuine love of the art makes me drawn to you. Thank you so much for sharing and teaching and caring.
El vídeo con las bases más sólidas sobre lo fundamental de la acuarela. Excelente!!! Gracias por el aporte y apoyo a toda la comunidad que apenas empezamos con nuestros pininos en la acuarela. :)
I'm an acrylic devotee -- never painted with water colors. But someone gave me a set of water colors, so I want to give it a try. This video has been very helpful. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've only ever used oils and acrylics, but have loved the look of watercolors, so I'm starting to dabble in it. You're work is amazing and beautiful! I hope to someday be half as good as you!💕
To be honest I Love the game but 1.I am not leaving my sleep for a game 2. We deal with so many of their shit we should be getting paid for it (or laid for it)
I usually use oil paints, I just started experimenting with acrylics, and I found some water color tubes I have been wanting to play with! But when you use a new medium it can feel so daunting. this was great little beginner course. Really helped me understand how they work. Thanks!
When I started painting with watercolor, I learned these things in the first week. Because I watched some tutorials on watercolor and then decided that I will ignore them and practice on my own. That way I made a lot of mistakes and learned how to fix them and avoid them in the future. Because painting is so fun for me, I learned quickly about the techniques. I also had natural grain paper to begin with and professional colors so I used them sparingly. Now i have more confidence but my supply preffrence is now expensive 😂😂

this tutorial probably answered all of the big questions ive had! your work really inspires me and I love that youre doing this! it's really helpful! thank you again!!
I think I could listen to you talk all day, and I love all of your artwork! I always enjoyed watercolors as a child and they are so versatile and beautiful. I love that you break it down and make it easy to understand. you actually make me feel like I can paint. ;) I have a small Sakura brand watercolor tray with a built in easel for field painting and easy transport and storage. I agree with you, I do like the ability to move the paints around and reorder my pallette. time to get out and actually start painting again!!
this was amazing! i have been really struggling to figure out watercolors. i have absolutely no formal education with art but never the less have been drawing and making things for about 5 years. While i'm not really embarrassed of my lack of education it makes it really difficult to pick up things with techniques or things that are kind of complicated in the beginning stages because im entirely teaching myself. but after watching this i really feel like i can work on watercolors again, i feel like i actually have some grasp on this medium that ive desperately wanted to work with. thank you so much!!!!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I've recently started playing with watercolors and have admired your work for some time. I did not realize watercolor required drying in between each layer. I look forward to watching more of your videos. :)
I just found you again! I love you: work. speaking, dress, hair, philosophy, colors, approach to art, and etc. I appreciate the air you breathe. Shannon Monterey, CA. 2019
I am just starting to do watercolour, and I was looking, at videos of different techniques, and finally I found yours, for some reason it did not show up in the feed, until today, and honestly I enjoyed and learned about the techniques, on yours more, the other videos are also great, thanks for these, and you are very talented! I am sharing with some of my friends and family, difinitely!
Looking forward to the next lesson. You presented this very well it was clear concise and well illustrated! Way to go you are a teacher! Love your smile
As someone who has always been too scared to buy watercolours, even though I really wanted to, I thought this was really helpful and motivated me to finally buy them(I've been using aquarell pencils until now, which are great, but just not the same as "the real deal"). If the actual art teachers I had so far had been a little more like you, I would have been motivated to get more into this hobby a lot sooner. I'm not saying they were bad, just that they didn't bring across any passion for art and the lessons felt forced. My friend, who's also into art, and I found that we weren't able to develop our own style in the class, since most tasks were strongly limiting us and basically all we did was copy "the old masters", instead of doing something our own way. I've been following this channel for a few months now and also showed my friend a few videos and I hope even though the internet where I am going to live will be bad, I'll still try to stick around because I really enjoy your content, especially the livestreams with the two of you are very entertaining so I just wanted to say thank you for that and the good advice :) (oh and thanks to anyone who read this mess, I seriously suck and writing comments of moderate lengt *sigh*)
Now I know why people like asmr videos. It is so calming to listen you talk and create work. I snapped out of the trance when you took the painting out of the camera view.
I rarely comment on a youtube post, but I just have to tell you that I think you made a really thorough and clear tutorial. It's well done. Thanks so much for this and I hope to see more videos from you like this. :) I'm a big fan of your work.
i'm an art teacher, and i have to say, your videos are one of the best on the net. you break the information, and convey said information, very well.
I just discovered your channel and I'm so happy I found U, U r a great teacher, better than most I've seen on youtube
I agree, there are so many water color videos on You Tube, but he explains very well :)

Yeah, Manga girls ARE very strang looking.
I do that cuz my anime eyes always look like boy eyes and girl eyes always look more real =to me=
Yes! Thank you for noticing how infant ish they make women in manga
There is a lot of different ways to approach watercolors, I hope I could show you mine ^^.
Tell me what you want to have covered next, do you have specific questions?

I'd like to see something about mixing colors, I've read something about cold and warm tones but its a bit confusing...
Hi! Kelly eddington made a vid about color mixing and it's really helpful. Maybe you can check her out?
thanks i'll go and have a look =3

I'm really being serious here taking notes then suddenly a painting of Luciel was shown and I'm like "O.O" and can't focus anymore 😂

Why did you stop making video your style was so cute TwT
HOLY CRAP DUDE, you just made everything click for me. I've seen a good amount of tutorials for beginners in watercolors and for the most part I understood what they were trying to say but it didn't make sense till this video. You made it so digestible and I could totally understand now how some other watercolor artists, including you, go about their paintings.
I would totally tune in for this series. It makes so much sense now, completely mind blown.
As a Vinny fan I laughed my ass off when he appeared at 5:50, that got me by surprise.
Great tutorial, this is really damn helpful!

If Laovaan replies to this, I will be the happiest person!
I hope you mean it xD
OMG! Thank you so much. *crying happily *
Not fair at all :)
Very much enjoyed your tutorial introducing watercolor techniques. One can never hear the beginning of the process enough.
Спасибо за русские субтитры, это правда очень помогает!!!
All thanks go to sparklingfeather you contributed the subtitles in Russian x)

Thank you thank you thank you! As a beginner, I've learned more from you in 12 minutes than most beginner classes I have taken. xo 🌸
Can you please do a tutorial on layering watercolour??
I'm an acrylic devotee -- never painted with water colors. But someone gave me a set of water colors, so I want to give it a try. This video has been very helpful. Thanks!

I WAS NOT expecting prince Sidon
I've watched lot's of RUclips videos on how to watercolor. But the way you've explained it was awesome dude. Thanks

I screamed so much at 5:29 lolol 😂😂😂 You can see the reason why by looking at my username ☺️
Very very useful beginner information, clearly presented. I have watch at least 100 watercolor videos and this may be the best.

Thanks a lot for this great tutorial! I have been always struggling with watercolors, your advices will definitely help :)
He looks very familiar. I just can't put my finger on it. He looks like another famous youtuber who has green hair. I don't know his name.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I've recently started playing with watercolors and have admired your work for some time. I did not realize watercolor required drying in between each layer. I look forward to watching more of your videos. :)

The way you teach about watercolours really helped me :) I look forward to every upload of yours! Also, the flow of this video is really relaxing haha
Looking forward to the next lesson. You presented this very well it was clear concise and well illustrated! Way to go you are a teacher! Love your smile
OMG YOU'RE MY BIGGEST INSPIRATION AND NOW A TUTORIAL FROM YOU?? I'm so happy thank you! ;^;
As someone who has always been too scared to buy watercolours, even though I really wanted to, I thought this was really helpful and motivated me to finally buy them(I've been using aquarell pencils until now, which are great, but just not the same as "the real deal").
Best watercolor tutorial i've ever seen. Thank you!!!!
I don't paint people, although I've never tried either, but I'm fascinated by watching you paint and love your videos
Now I know why people like asmr videos. It is so calming to listen you talk and create work. I snapped out of the trance when you took the painting out of the camera view.
Thank you. I am about to start watercolors, and this was helpful. I paint with acrylic, so all this flexibility will be new to me.
thank you SO MUCH, in under 12 minutes you helped me fix almost all of my self taught mistakes!
I rarely comment on a youtube post, but I just have to tell you that I think you made a really thorough and clear tutorial. It's well done. Thanks so much for this and I hope to see more videos from you like this. :) I'm a big fan of your work.
