At the time when Cindi really came about in the 80’s, i think she was misunderstood by many.
A fantastic singer and musician, many didn’t really listen and understand how the lyrics of many of her songs were really deep lessons to learn, kind of covered up in her own offbeat way. She has always deserved a serious listen.

I'm 70 years old and I remember when Cindy Lauper came on the scene. She has a most haunting voice and great vocal range. Truly under rated !
She has no range. Just a unique beautiful voice.
She is under-rated and her music was considered "pop" music back then. I wish "pop" music today had as much depth and soul as pop back when. Now I really have to dig to find good music. Haunting voice indeed .

But here I am, 54 years old, hearing the song again and seeing it for exactly what it is. Youth is wasted on the young! She really is under-recognized as a vocalist. I saw her live, outdoors, on the True Colours tour about 10 years ago. She sang everything from her standards to blues, every note pitch perfect, with no auto-tune. It was an honour to be there-with a few thousand gay guys, all weeping uncontrollably at this song lauding acceptance.

Whenever I hear Cyndi Lauper I think back to 1984 when I stood in front of the mirror with my mother's necklaces and a hairbrush and sang "She Bop". In a small East German town, in a world surrounded by walls and barbed wire. The world on the other side was light years away from me. 5 years later we took to the streets and tore down the walls. Today I can hear these songs in a free world. But no death strip and brutal border systems could keep all these wonderful songs away from us at that time.
I had very similar memories, standing in my room as a teen and feeling so old singing those timeless words. Just on the other side of the wall in a small western German town. Good to hear that music is everywhere and that those walls are finally has fallen!
