    As a violist my order of liking is Evah Pirazzi, Larsen, Obligato. I've been playing on Dominants for years....while they're good if you're in an orchestra, they make my viola sound like it has a cold when I'm soloing.

    I actually really like these strings. I tried them first a year ago, but they were just decent. Recently I tried them again on a different violin, an intermediate modern European-made violin, and these strings work very well on it. A very warm, colorful, and even sound throughout the strings. I substituted with a Goldbrokat-E-string. I will leave them on for a while and test how they will hold up.
    I gave these strings another try

    WOW...I'm looking for strings and heard a professional play on Obligatos and loved them. Hear them hear and love them even more!!! They make the violin sound so mature! I have a newer violin (less than two years old) so that may be why I notice the difference.

    Nobody else noticed that he only had his violin tuned correctly with Larsen&Dominant? With all the other string sets he had his violin tuned about 1/3 of a note to low...

    The Larsen Tone was Tops for me. Obligato second. I Just sprang for Obligato strings for my Viola. I don't know why I couldn't pony up the $100 before. I've been searching for the Viola with sound that I want, What I needed was the Strings with the sound that I want. (Keep Me Searchin' for a Heart of Gold. And I'm getting' Old.)

    @DesiFuyuko after hearing everything I still like mostly the Pirazzi, which is the only brand I've consistently used the past 3 years, but I think I like the Maestro's E better, it doesn't lose its fullness on the high e.

    I liked the Oblugato strings over the Eva Pirazzi strings in this instance. Ordinarily I would select Evas for my own enjoyment. But here you have made your instrument much more creamy and round with the Obligato strings. I also lean tword Vision Solo strings and Infeld Red. You have opened my eyes to the obligato strings. Thank you.😅

    @zibob1000 You can choose between the original E and Goldbrokat, it is the same price. I prefer the Goldbrokat E, made in Germany.

  • @Le25Roy195
    @Le25Roy195 12 лет назад +1

    The Obligato D is NICE! The Pirazzi A seems darker and smoother than the Larsen and Obligato. Can't decide on a G, but the Pirazzi is nice. The Obligato E was good, as was the Larsen, but I'd want to hear a few more of the popular E choices first (like Jargar, Pirastro Gold, and PI?).
    I've always played Dominant (because that's what I grew up with) but I'm thinking I'll branch out.

    @zibob1000 Sure, zibob1000. Recently I was asked to make a video of a concert featuring Ilya Konovalov, Concertmaster of the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra. I noted that he had a tail piece with integrated string adjusters on his Strad that he had inherited from Henrik Schering. If he thinks it's a good idea, then why should we pretend that we need to use more effort, risking wear and tear of the peg holes by using pegs for tuning when we could use fine tuners?

  • @AbnerAlmeidaAA
    @AbnerAlmeidaAA 10 лет назад +2

    Maestro Strings seems good, but I could hear an HUGE difference on Larsen. I'm still keeping those on my viola. Maestro brought a good and steady sound, but I like the deep and melancholic sound that Larsen brings to the viola.

  • @DietrichLasa
    @DietrichLasa  14 лет назад +3

    @zibob1000 Maestro Strings are very good value for money. There is no claim that they are better than any of the other strings in this video, but some musicians like Maestro Strings better than some of the other featured brands. At least we can say that Maestro Strings are an inexpensive alternative to those higher priced brands.
    You mentioned 'vibrato.' The quality of the vibrato depends on the musician, not the string! However, Maestro Strings feels comfortable, and they 'speak' easily.

  • @nexus23de
    @nexus23de 12 лет назад

    I am testing out these strings right now. They have a nice tone, are responsive, and not hard to play. They do feel a bit thin/cheap under my fingers, maybe because I am used to a little higher tension strings. The feel of the A string could be better. Summarized: they are pretty good for the price.

    While this video does a fair job at comparing the strings across a well controlled series of demos, it does not capture the significant differences in playing characteristics on each set. As a violist, I love the sounds of Obligatos however I find that they are much poorer in rapid response than Eva Pirazzi's which I currently use now. Larsen tends to have a very clear sound to me, but is not worth the cost. Dominants ironically sound like garbage up close but are quite impressive further back, and also seem to be less forgiving in terms of getting a decent tone when compared to the other brands.

  • @assa123assa123
    @assa123assa123 14 лет назад

    In my opinion it might be not completely fair to compare new sets of strings. New strings tend to have harsher sound and many factors change with playing like grease and rosin particles that affect tone production and violin wood settling to hold particular strings pressure. Would be more fair to compare 'well played in' strings. and yet as the tension is different it also depends on the instrument which set sounds better.

  • @DietrichLasa
    @DietrichLasa  14 лет назад +1

    Good point, assa123assa123. In addition, there are many other factors that make this exercise only 'approximate', such as the quality of the microphone, the quality of the speakers, the quality of the recording - distance, sensitivity adjustment, acoustics in the room, the nature of that particular violin - it may work better with certain strings etc.
    The point of this video is only to show that the distance between these inexpensive and known strings is much smaller now.

    @DietrichLasa  14 лет назад

    @zibob1000 If money doesn't matter any of the mentioned strings are ok. If money matters then I prefer to pay less and go for the Maestro Strings as the quality is comparable to the other brands, according to my opinion. I personally prefer to upgrade the E string to the Goldbrokat E string, and this option is available if you follow the link below the video.

  • @violiavimal4213

    guys the strings depend on your violin, soo there is no best strings. yes there are quality differences but not much when it comes to the high end string producers. My violin suits Obligato it is a new instrument that is already very bright.

    • @DietrichLasa
      @DietrichLasa  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, SolarFire, that is true that brighter violins need warmer strings and warmer violins do well with brighter strings. On top of that, we may have a different taste and we may like one or the other more for that reason. For example, some of our customers, teachers, recommend to all advanced students to go for the Obligato, whereas others recommend the Evah Pirazzi. However, we can detect differences in quality between strings of different budgets. This is another criteria. We found that for violins that are neither 'cold' nor 'too mellow' the Maestro Strings do a marvellous job although they are so much cheaper. That's why we pthem onto our Amore Violin (our own label) as a default. The Amore violin with these strings has enjoyed only 5-star reviews.

    This is a Great Video, could you make the same but this time only with Larsen Strings. Original, Tzigane, Virtuoso and Il Cannone, I understand from Larsen that they have a different Spectrum. I played with the originals and I was satisfied, then this year I test the Tzigane, and were incredible, but it is too expensive to test all the other variations, will be great if you could do it.

    Playing scales with different strings does not tap the individual qualities,textures,full color & tonality of each of the individual strings for comparison.Much better to play a full tune with each string set to hear the range,sonic difference,individual character of the GDAE strings.Many violin players settle for a combination mixture of different strings from different makers to achieve the particular sound that is their benchmark.

      Hello Thomas, this video is a little old. We have since changed the makers of our Maestro Strings. Our local professionals report that they compete favourably with Tonica strings. Yet, Evah Pirazzi, Obligato, and now that beautiful new Il Canone Larsen Solo set for violin are on a different level altogether. Thank you for your time in assessing the comparison. I plan to do a video that looks at different ways to improve the sound, irrespective of strings. I also wish to do a video featuring the Il Canone Solo strings by Larsen - they are super!
