    Some mom is going to be so blessed at the thrift shop when they find those things for their kids to enjoy! That is what gets me through decluttering... knowing that some other mom may be blessed with a jewel that they otherwise wouldn't have been able to afford for their child...

    Man, a couple years ago I decluttered the garage on my house and it was so nice and clear, there was space for all the bikes and my husbands tools and all the things that he wasn’t willing to give up, I even built a kayak rack and had the 3 kayaks nicely on there as well. But it’s awful again, there’s another kayak in there, barely a path to walk through, everything is everywhere. I’m so discouraged, every space I get decluttered and organized gets trashed again and I can’t keep up. I’m outnumbered and the only one that wants less stuff in the house so it’s a constant battle with my whole family. I’m at my wits end and drowning.

    • @moneybee
      @moneybee 2 года назад +7

      Ahh Allison that sounds overwhelming! I hope you can find little victories along the way to progress. I saw an advertisement the other day for a "foldable kayak" which I thought was an interesting way to reduce the footprint. My guess is the fact that they even thought to make foldable ones means that other people are experiencing similar things as you (so know you're not alone!) Best of luck, I'm sending positive energy your way! 🙂

    • @MelindaPlainandSimple
      @MelindaPlainandSimple 2 года назад +9

      Awww. I just want to give you a virtual hug so you don't feel alone in this.
      Can you set some rules down for your family? Maybe you could get them to help you put the garage back in order so they see how much work it is. Then make them responsible and accountable for keeping it maintained by putting their things back where they go. Make it as easy as possible to put things back, otherwise it won't work.
      If they will get on board and cooperate without incentives or consequences, that would be great. But if not, there are options. Take away the item for a week if it's not put away. Take away a privilege. Charge a small fee every time they leave the item out or to get it back.
      It may take a week or two to form a new habit, and you may have to remind them (nicely) a few times, but let them know that once that probation time is up, the consequences that you have explained will begin.
      And/or you can use the reward system. If they maintain the garage, they get a reward. That could be anything: Make a special food they like, have a movie night, give them a little extra time playing a computer game.
      Don't be overly strict or obsessive, though. Try to avoid any nagging or conflict. You want them to learn to help out, not to resent it.
      In addition to regular maintenance, have a periodic garage clean up session with everybody pitching in. Everything can be reassessed to see if the systems are working. If there are items they no longer use, maybe those can go. Straighten up anything that has gotten out of control. Dust the bins, sweep the floor, wipe away the cobwebs, clean windows/doors/doorknobs, etc.
      Work together with little ones, but even if your family is older and their schedules make it impossible to do the project together, each one can contribute. Assign age appropriate tasks or a section and set a deadline for everybody to have their part completed. Let them know they can do it all at once or they can work on it a little each day. Encourage them to ask if they need assistance. Be an example and show them that it's okay to help each other. Make it enjoyable. Laugh. Talk. Play music. Sing songs. Take before and after pictures so they can see the results of their effort. Once it's done, make a point to celebrate together with a cookout or ice cream or something fun.
      If they want to have all of the things, that's okay. It's also okay for them to learn to take care of and manage their things. You aren't being a mean mom by teaching your kids to help out. You're being a great mom when you do that. Virtual Hugs!

    I had very tidy closets, cabinets and storage systems in the garage that were very organized and labeled.

    Between you and Cass I’ve been inspired to declutter, clean, and organize my kitchen over the last two weeks. I have a toddler and a 4 month old so I only have afternoon nap time to get it done but I’ve been doing a cupboard per day and it’s been amazing. I’ve discovered things we having used since we moved into this house 7 years ago. I’ve been making space in the cupboards we use most often, I’ve been clearing off the countertop. Looking at it from the outside, it doesn’t actually look that much different (a testament to the amount of stuff we had I suppose), but it feels so much better to me.

    Oh my goodness. I am dreading our garage, mostly because it's difficult to walk through right now from my kids just throwing stuff in. We moved in this year and the previous owners, unfortunately, left a bunch of garbage, tools, junk, etc. We moved when there was a lot of snow on the ground so we just put stuff in the garage, basically "on top" of the previous owners stuff. We haven't been able to go through everything yet and I'm desperate to do this because I want to find our holiday stuff. But having 5 kids, which includes a newborn, makes it hard to get out there. We're in Wisconsin if you want a huge project with satisfying before and after photos ;)

    Our garage is 10x 20 and full(!) of so much that you can hardly walk.. About 10 years ago I cleaned it out one week that my husband was away. I did organize like with like and didn't throw out any of his stuff. We have enough tools to start a tool rental company. I am serious!. we have gotten rid of a lot of camping gear, giving it to family, younger family. We have a huge pantry shelf system, which after 20 years of having food in the garage attracted mice... Suffice it to say that we now have very clean shelves, 49 dead mice, lots of food thrown out, and plastic containers for the food that isn't canned or frozen. There is also some sports equipment, and painting stuff. Thank you for the inspiration, and when my broken shoulder heals then maybe I can get my husband to start again. I had a quarantine bin of extra kitchen utensils out there, but i think it got covered.

    I have 3 major areas left to declutter and all are daunting: The spare bedroom (which became the catch-all room), the garage (which is stacked full, with just enough room to park my car), and the basement (which actually consists of 4 rooms, all full).
    I've been whittling away at each area, but now that it's cooler and before it gets too cold, I plan to focus on the garage more. It's a little tricky because my husband isn't ready or willing to let go of things, but I at least want to make it better and zoned.

      Let him declutter things that aren’t “his” like recycling stuff or kid’s stuff. Get him to hang tools and equipment on the walls or from the ceiling. Good luck

      @@karenhoward8542 Thanks! All great suggestions. He is actually the one who takes the recycling to the center, but I know he also takes stuff out sometimes to use for his current and future science projects. I have a big box for that stuff now so hopefully it won't be randomly tucked around the garage anymore.
      He did go through a large box of old games with me this weekend and he only kept a couple of them. That was a win.
      He is into science, not tools. He also hangs onto memorabilia things, cards, old cds, movies, records.
      He isn't the least bit bothered by any of the mess. As I've decluttered the garage this weekend, I've been separating his boxes and bins so he can go through them. I doubt he will let go of much, if any. It's all science and childhood stuff. But at least it will be grouped instead of all over the place. I actually have 6 bins empty on a shelf where he can put things. I just have to get him to use them.
      I don't mind if he keeps his stuff. My goal is to make it manageable and tidier. I figure by getting rid if my excess stuff, I'm literally winning half the battle with clutter.
      I will try to modify your tips to my science-minded hubby. 😊 Thanks!

    This is great video!!! I actually started in our garage yesterday, this is our fall break. I did some last fall. So it has been a year. Being in this house for 20yrs we accumulated so much that we can't put a car in it. I think it's going to be a couple of years before it gets to a point we can put in car in. We have 4 older kids that we are extremely busy with. I do plan on working on the garage for the next 3 days. We are in that time of our life that we want the house and garage declutter, clean, and simplified. It's all overwhelming and gives me anxiety.
    Love your videos abd giving us the motivation to get this done.

    Outstanding ! Congrats , everyone ! Just WOW ! Love this. By seeing these great examples you set ... seeing these steps, tips, processes in action, it just motivates us all so much ! Right , fellow Simplifyers ? Another fabulous video with Dawn, Tom, Diana , & wonderful people! I don’t have a garage... or attic - but I have in the past ... I’m 61 & did raise 2 amazing kids ( now grown ) ... so this is all hugely relatable. Thankfully, I have down sized a few xs. And I will yet again! I DO have some boxes on closet shelves, books & CDs I could part with ( again!) , photos to pair down ( again !) , clothes to part with ( again!), sentimental & other paper to purge & organize ( again! Paper is my housekeeping downfall !) & more. How ???? Haha ! I don’t know ! I’m not a big shopper or anything. But it is what it is ... I adore you guys and LOVE this channel. Tbh , you are without a doubt my FAVORITE RUclips channel ... by FAR ! Love from Buffalo, NY Liz

    I noticed one thing as you all were working. I think the bins you’re going through are on top of another bin so that no one has to bend way down.

    We moved from a triple garage to a home that converted the garage into a bonus room. You can imagine all the stuff we had to go through. It was our dumping ground. I’m so happy we do not have a garage for this very reason. It has forced us to declutter and not store much in our tiny attic space.

    Two years ago I went into our local thrift shop and found 5 of the 12”+ Marvel super hero action figures/dolls for $1 each. I couldn’t believe it. There’s no way that we would have been able to purchase them at full price. I bought them all and they went under the Christmas tree. My boys *still* play with them regularly. As a mum, I know how difficult it can be to pass on our baby’s things as they are outgrown - but these items can be such a blessing to other families in the future.

    The other piece here is that they showed up with a trailer and drove away with a lot (all?) of it. The sisters could have done that in maybe four hours, but then there are piles in the garage that need multiple trips with the car or van to the landfill and Goodwill. Or research needs to be done to figure who to call. And suddenly piles sit there for weeks or months. That's also intimidating. That final mile of the process warrants discussing here. Who do we call to get stuff out fast?

Have made great progress in the past three weeks but need to push to get some bulky things gone. My shelving there is inconveniently high for my short body, which is part of the reason for the mess … hard to put things away and retrieve when needed when you always have to haul out a ladder. 😕

    I introduced my sister to your videos about a year ago. I had just finished going through my house with the help of my daughter. (For most people it is imperative to have help!) My sister wanted to declutter her house. I wanted to help, but we live in different states. She had some friends she felt comfortable asking to help, but one of them got COVID and the other had extra things going on in her life. In the end we decided to do a half hour video call at 2:00 pm, Monday through Thursday (we are flexible according to our schedules). The half hour doesn't seem like it is too much to tackle and a lot of times we go longer than that and/or she will keep going after we hang up. (It is that momentum thing, like you talked about.) A video call has worked out really well! It's as good as being there! And I don't have to drive for hours to get there. We have you to thank Dawn! Thank you!

    This was great! Being able to drive into a freshly cleaned and organized garage is such a boost for mental health.
    I would so appreciate if you could do a segment on how to safely and ethically declutter and dispose of chemicals/cleaners etc that accumulate in our homes and garages. When I moved into my current home I "inherited" many gallon containers of old polyurethane, cleaning acids, paint, auto fluids etc. Some were accepted at seasonal local community clean up drives but most were not accepted. I've learned to buy the smallest amount I can get by with so I don't have like half a gallon of whatever left that I'm not going to use. I don't want to dump stuff down the drain or pour it over soil in the backyard...help! I use only non-toxic cleaners but certain home improvement projects require this or that chemical product. Thanks for all your tips!
