P.S. I dont usually work on Fords. Авто/Мото
Clever by definition: Car guy's approach to what otherwise constitutes a major repair(s) involving multiple components of the HVAC system. Artistry in keeping things simple.
I don't see nothing wrong with the way he did it as long as you seal it up good its his truck he can do what he likes , I like this video the hell with all that work taking that dash off !!!!!!!
It would have come apart and go back together the right way faster than having to glue and duct tape everything the way he did it... And it would work!
Well you do it your way and work your ass off taking that dash down I could give a shit but for me I'll use the duck tape and your wrong his was is just as good an faster and still does the job and you can't see anything once its put back together , and i could give a shit about your opinion
And to think. I was going to go through the floor board with a chainsaw and dynamite.
WOW!
What a hack job!
I've found that busting out the windshield gives you much easier access to all those pesky bolts!
You can also sawzall the firewall off the Ranger....very quick way to get to the heater core.
LOVE IT!!!!!!
"Hack job" is right. I might do this to my own ride, but never a customer`s.
Good one bud! I needed a good laugh struggling to change out heater core
.
What did I just watch ?? Cut the duct work in half then get a screwdriver and break this.. 😳
I accept the fact this is an alternative method and there's transparency! No degrading thoughts here buddy, thanks for the entertainment!
I agree 100% that's what flex seals for and they got all kind's of sealer on the market , $36 dollar heater core and got to pull the dash to get to it. I don't think so!! DAM GOOD VIDEO AND SMART MAN
Very helpful, not for everyone as this youtube stated, but in my case, 300,000 mile vehicle that will never be traded, with everything working including the A/C (with original Freon) which I didn't want to disturb, much less depressurize, this turned out to be a great approach. Integrity of overall structure including airbag was not compromised. Appreciate the author taking time to post.
I just cut half of my dash out with a grinding tool and sawzall , removed my duct work and vent system along with my radio, disposed of the passenger airbag system now its open and i can cut the heater core out . That saved so much time. Work truck neways. I already had my passanger seat removed for a toolbox ive bolted down to the floor. Now my work trucks back in operation.
"I don`t always work on Fords, but when I do, I always take short 'cuts'."
JacMan I was gonna say, this a Chevy guy for sure 😂😂
This was like watching a car crash in slow motion. You don't want to keep watching, but you can't help yourself. You want to see how it ends. Usually badly.
I'm a ASE certified mechanic and I approve this message... Would never do this on a customer car at the dealer but for my 20 year old beater fuck yes I will. Damn truck literally isn't worth the time to do it the proper way.
If ya take a grenade and shove it in the glove box and step back itll come out by its self
Made me laugh..good one.
To this day his wife is asking, "when are you gonna put that heater back together?"
I admire your persistence in getting the job done but having done many heater core jobs without cutting anything, this is definitely the hard way… You may be surprised how easily the dash comes out of that truck once you know how it’s done
6 bolts to take the dash off, 5 to take out the air box, the right way is literally easier! Hope no one else tries this ever!
sounds like youve never done it
@@ufartface I actually did it about a month ago. It is WAY easier than this. You DO have to remove the cruise control servo and the coolant reservoir in order to back out the evaporator and fan box far enough to remove the four nuts that mount the heater box to the firewall, and you MAY have to remove the ECU, but other than that, what AARON ROSE says is about all. Now, mind you, I got to spend several hours on a Pick-N-Pull wrecking yard Explorer doing it the hard way, but by the time I finished with that, it was easy on mine. Which is a method of learning I highly recommend.
The cinematography is outstanding
I have a very nice & clean 2000 ford f150. Sorry guys not braking my dashboard.
Saw nothing that compromised safety gear here. Not recommended for a "customers" car without their agreement, but my 18+ year old Mountaineer has 350,000+ on her and this would definitely be "OK" for a truck that's nearing her termination but needs a quick heater core replacement for a few years more service. Discharging the AC and yanking 20 electrical plugs, using the full dash removal at a day plus method are not 'simple' like most of the commenters are referring to. Thanks for showing an alternative technique. It's not for all, just as you stated in your opening. Well Done.
That is my thoughts, as I do not allow a passenger to ride, never. And my Expedition has many miles on it, but still runs and drives great.
I ask the Ford Dealer about the so called approved way, and they simply said, that to remove the dash, it also requires a Cert. person that does all the disconects of the elec. And the price was over $600.00 plus the cost of the Heater Coil. Just take your time and double check what you do, so you can reverse the install.
Agreed, why spend $1000 on a vehicle that operates fine but you can go on craigslist and buy another explorer for the same price. If this shit ever happens with my cherokee I will run the coolant lines into the car and buy an aftermarket core & blower motor setup, more than enough room in the passenger footwell to do this.
Just in case you're wondering, doing it the right way is much easier than this.
@@BrightBlueJim No, this took me 1.5 hours to get the job done and buttoned up, "the right way" would take 6+ hours with more systems being removed and reinstalled. What's it hurt, my vehicle will not be saved form the scrap pile in another 5 or so years and I have a heater now until then for the price of a core, some gorilla tape, foam sealant just as an extra seal..
This brings new meaning to the term "hack job".
breaking the rules and yet getting it done is the sign of a clever individual!
Breaking rules is fine.... if you don't break everything else...
I learned a lot from my father in law... he tended to take this approach to things. mostly, I don't...
I’m a mechanic you definitely put some time into it 👍
It will help you understand, the reason for the high labor cost.
Might save some time but I don't plan on cutting the truck in new parts. Glad it worked for you. Gorilla Glue REQUIRED ; - )
LMAO...Holy cow. This video was sent to me....lol. If we used this method at work, we would all be fired! This method is a lot more work! Do it right boys, pull the dash.
for future reference the dash comes out as a whole assembly. you can get it out if you follow a proper youtube video or can come across the mitchel ondemand instructions. takes an hr to get it out and an hr and a half to change core and re assemble. a lot less agravation
Dear Mr Car-guy; I like your vídeo and you explanation. I would like to thanks your time and for you are sharing your experience. It was so usefull to me. Congratulations. Take my hug from Brazil.
I want to see the “put it back together” video. You know with all the duct tape, hot glue guns, super glue, caulk, chewing gum, spray foam, egg whites, semen and boogers.
I altered your instructions. I am allergic to egg whites.
@@351cleavland😂
Hvac tape...
Saw , cut , choppin, that heater core right on out that biotch!!!
"So I cut this and I snapped that..." No thanks, just do it the right way.
Garrett Romero lmao! Yeah, "I just went ahead and snapped her off there".... 🤣
1st we drink a 5th of Jack Daniels
If your AC is not working you can use the AC coil as a heater call just cut the lines for two rubber lines on it and you're good to go I've done this many times
great idea
That's a much better hack than the one we see here.
thats rich
If this is "EASY" whats the hard way? Geez..
Thanks for the good video none the less. It looks like it got the job done.
Hard way is removing the dash... But I'd definitely rather someone do that instead of chopping stuff to bits... Can't believe they did this. I would definitely not recommend doing this at all. I'd rather spend $800 for a mechanic that *knows what he is doing* to do it. People think it's a ridiculous unnecessary cost but it's expensive for a reason. If you can't afford to pay $800 to fix your car's heater, how do you afford to own a car at all?
This is deffinatly a quick-job.
The downside to doing this Is if the hose ever leaks, you'll have coolant on the floor board.
Will it work for a 99 f150?
Good shortcut method.
Will this work for 2000 f150
This should be the new standard in Ford repair!
Here...Hold my beer
This is good stuff. Excellent work sir. Yall act like your 00 rangers are some kind of god send.. dont think the old man down the road wants to pay 1200$ to fix the core on his twice weekly garbage run truck.... if you want it done "right" more power to ya... this guy is showing a low budget solution.
Yeah, except that in this case, you can actually do this job right in less time, without ever plugging in a Sawzall.
Good enough for my 375k 98 ranger , thanks bud "
What is the best product to use to seal heater core case pieces back together ? Just getting ready to do this, im gonna run rubber hoses thru firewall & meet the cut short new heater core pipes. Truck is paid for, I'm o.k. with hacking my heater core case apart ( carefully)
foil tape
I hope they do not plan to sell this thing. LOL YIKES!!!
I like it. Nice work fellas.
Awesome brother thanks
Good job and good thinking it out,Great video
Everybody has that friend where you think they have great ideas and then at the end of the night you're in jail snuggling with Bubba. This reminds me of that friend
So if there is a heater hose leak, the entire dash has to be disassembled to replace the heater hoses since the clamps are now inside the cabin.
Not only that, but there really wasn't any reason to cut the tubes.
How about we blame Ford for building this stupid desighn, i had a 91 lincoln town car i had to take the entire dash out for the ac evap what a pain in the ASS stupid stipid to put a serviecable part in a location like that ! had a 93 Thunderbird same thing, you should NOT have to take any dash out of any car to get to a sacrificial part like a heater core or ac evap, on my 86 GM truck I can have the ac or heater core out in a couple hours the evap is in the engine compartment and the heater core can be accessed through the glove box like it should be.
jay bradley I pull dashs all the time mostly chevys and nissans but everyone puts servicable parts behind the dash
Damn it! He is a actual Ford tech....
If you go to the shop manual, it pretty much tells you to disassemble everything inside the cabin to change the heater core. So to a factory-trained Ford mechanic, this MIGHT actually seem like a shortcut!
Would this be the same on a 97 just got one and the heat doesn’t work but ac blows cold thought I’d replace heater core first
With no leak, id try a reverse core blow out to remove the plug. Also reference ericthecarguy for instructions.
Under NO circumstances should you do this to your Exploder. Find another video, please. There are three possibilities if the A/C works but not the heater: plugged heater core, broken valve in the water hose to the heater core, or bad blender door servo. All of which are easy fixes.
There is also a fourth, which nobody but me has ever seen, which is a broken blender door, which required replacing the whole heater box. But now everything works!!!
How did you re-hook up the air ducts?
Aluminium Duct tape DUH well he probably used duck tape but do it right and use aluminum tape lol
Done many rangers I think after the first two maybe one of any Ford it would be much faster to do it properly . I just couldn't stop watching though to see what really happened.
I like it !!!!
Thinking outside the box !
Hey !!!.....Poor people have poor ways, really all it needs to do is function.
I took my dash board But still can't get it out of the way enough to remove core .So I'm going to get the SAW and and do it this way ( run hoses through the firewall)Good video
wtf if u got a quarter inch ratchet drive set why u gotta use all them saws.... haha this is a funny video
Sean Moody 🤣
I'm from the Balkans. We do such kind of shortcut to. Open the door then launch rocket propelled grenade at dash. Then replace heater core. 1/2 hour job.
I had to double check, but he DID say this was an easier way LOL
Couldn't get to it with a socket so I snapped it. Then I got the saw and cut this in half. Then we cut these off cause it wouldn't go back in with them on there. Now I'm going to trim this off so nobody will know I broke it. Then I'll put some duct tape on this and that so it won't leak air. Then once you get everything back together nobody can see what you did so it's the "Outta sight, Outta mind" fix. No thanks. That's why I fix my own vehicles. You never know what a "mechanic" may have done that you don't know about. If you do it yourself you will always know exactly what has been done to it.
Lmfao! You hit the nail on the head!!! I died laughing when i read this! I have a 1997 Mercury Cougar, i took it the the shop to have new upper/lower control arms, tie rods/ends, upper/lower ball joints, stabilizer bar links, rack boots, and strut rod bushings put on. I bought all the parts myself so i know exactly what i had. Well i went to pick my car up at the shop 200$ later. drove like a dream for a day or two, until i had it aligned the thats when everything started going to shit. So i got to looking up under it and seen the rack boots where just hanging, not tightened on, they didnt even put the metal bands on that hold it on. I ordered a whole set of BLACK strut rod bushings, well im looking under the front end and i see 2 black and 2 BLUE srb's and im like,WTF where did these come from, Oh and the two blue ones where cracked and busted at that! So i call the shop and the owner doesn't seem to know who worked on my shit. To make an even longer story short, Im stuck with my car riding worse than it was before i took it to them to fix,now the front end is popping and shit, and it looks like ill be replacing my heater core myself. Gotta watch out people like this guy, will FUCK YOU WITH NO LUBE!!! Outta sight, Outta mind hahahah
Austin Anglin i'd file a complaint with the BBB and then threaten them with a lawsuit. that's utter bullshit what they did to your car.
He said because I bought the parts, it is not covered under his warranty. What it is, is I bought the parts and he didn't get to overcharge me for using his shitty parts. I get everything mentioned above all name brand for around 250$. I he would have ordered all of that he probably would have charged me around a 1000 if he would have had to get the parts. Thats just how most shops like this work, the make more money by overcharging you on parts than they do from the labor. Damn crooks.
AM Auto parts will cover the Core for 10 years, which you do not have to change or bend the Core to install.
I'll keep this in mind if I get desperate.... yeesh!
Whoa. Not what I expected. This is a junkyard heater core pull.. not sure why as they generally arent too expensive. But in all reality, this is in no way, shape, or form a fix to a problem. You now have multiple issues.
What's the problem ? Too much of a by-the-book mechanic snob are ya? he gets the glove box door back on and you're not going to see it, and maybe somebody will do the same repair like this on a truck and sell it to you and you not know it. ha ha ha, wouldn't that be funny?
That's more work than just doing it the RIGHT way!! C'mon people
In his defense, the procedure called out in the shop manual is WAY harder.
Yeah, I'll just do it the regular way thanks.
I'm not sure if this is a Fix-It video, or a comedy video?
Thank you sir, that was very helpful!
I need this guy to replace my heater in my house, NOT.
good video
You did say the easier way right! Just checking cause when people say the easier way that's what you kinda expect!!
will this work for 1998 Ford EXPLORER?! I WISH YOU HAD LIGHT on your video!!!
Another similar shortcut is to put hand grenade under dash.
I just pulled the engine then took an angle grinder and cut through the firewall 😂
funny shit
I like it ........
just cut the gd dash in half....what's the difference? let me guess....they still charge full book rate.
My personal best time for replacing a heater core in my ranger 48 minutes start to finish this looks like a commercial for the sawzall corporation don't put the airbag back in if it goes off it's gonna look like the passenger walked through a bouncing betty
You're right it isn't for everyone. My daddy told me if I can't do it right don't do it at all.
Hillbilly heater core replacement. I just did my heater core, its not difficult enough to justify a hack job like this.
I would rather do this the hard way then sawing through shit and breaking mounts.
Then that's what you do asshole
darn i cut my favorite finger off trying this.
Would this approach work in an 02?
Wait broken shit...uh I don't think so I'll take the dash off.
How do you change a heater core without saying you don't know how to change a heater core.
shit cut off hose connect to New core. run hose thru here and ther. and leave it UNder. seat. done. 😋
Averigua alguien que esté en el gabacho que entienda lo que dice el güero para que lo traduzca en espanol
It it the same for Ford f150 1997
this is automotive butchery at its worst .. you can have the dash out in 15 minutes .. cut this ,break that . half ass what ever . do it right or dont do it at all .. I feel sorry for the person that owns this truck
Feel like an hour more of work you would've had the job done the right way.
AN HOUR, no, the actual time is 5 to 6 hours, if you remove the dash, or at least enough to swing the right hand half out enough to get to the Core. Checked this with 3 very good Ford Dealers that have top of the line tech's.
@@xabhax Sure there is. It's called "editing".
Lol wow I feel sorry for who ever owns this truck!!
Can't do that with a customer car
Definition of a hack job!
And then when you do all this you put your new heater core in and you gotta put all this hacked up shit back together lol...like I said it's easier to do it the RIGHT way...trust me
Is this an SNL skit?
Defiantly shad tree. I agree with the other replies. Oh, the poor owner of this truck.
careful not to poke a hole in the heater core
As he says in the video, he wasn't worried about that because the heater core was bad already.
Cut off the entire front end at the firewall. Slide it away. Plenum is right in front of ya. Drink. Replace heater core. Drink. Slide front end back. Drink. Get a bag o' big ass zipties. Done.
Hell yeah.!!!!. My kinda guy... Fuck the world.. Just get it done... Guess who's just paying for car parts.. This guy. .😎..#ain'tcomplaining #getrdun
How "not" to replace a heater core
Wait?let me try this.ah fuck it get the grinder.
I left at the electric hack saw
You cut the structural support to the dash not the vent! If that airbag ever goes off it could kill someone. That right there folks shows you the difference between a shade tree and an professional automotive technician. People complain about how much quality auto repair shops charge. This video right here proves why you want to spend the extra money to for a proper repair. All the time wasted hacking the vehicle up would have been better spent removing the dashboard and repairing it the correct way.
U are right at least I see someone that sees what I saw I've Ben working on cars for 18 years in a body shop as a head painter and in between I do air bags in all kinds of cars from the best too the cheap cars and on top at my house I have a big garage that 3 cars can fit and I have it like a shop just like work maybe 30 thou. In tools and not cheap I mean mac snapon and some maco but ya I do a lot of side jobs and I still do it all the right way and a bit cheaper price I have welder 80 gal compressor with two big dryer and about 75 feet of pipe so nice dry air for the tools and still I don't or would never do somthing like that noing that a air bag has too be on there the right way that has a strong kick when it's set off I can't beleave a video like this what a f..u..k... Head !!!!!!!!!
AS for me, I never allow a rider, so first disable the Air Bag, which is simple to do, AFTER you disconect the Battery, it will not fire the Bag. This we do when extracating a person from a Crash. In fact it is mandatory to do this.

Vince Gagliardi fhgxdwuolxaggjhdriueruire5iur5
Vince Gagliardi I agree with you on what your saying I will not pay someone 1300 to replace my heater core I do all my own work in my driveway but I do do it the correct way an pull the dash
I had mine replaced in 1.5 hours by simply disconnecting the dash assembly first. its way easier than you made it out to be.
brilliant
this should be deleted wtf haha....i died laughing after the hacksaw blade statement
Should've been title HOW NOT TO FIX A HEATERCOIL
Core*
if you have a sledge hammer and saw there is nothing that can not be accomplished
hey i can tell you a nice short cut too,... why don't you just cut thru firewall and get it out that way its easier and faster and then just weld all that shit back together, lol.
Why don’t you just cut open the dash with a cutoff wheel? Heater core “easy”
