    I think that to me, the most helpful thing about these videos (other than the techniques/methods themselves) is your constant reminding that when something looks ugly, it's OK, because you can always clean it up later. This change in thinking basically relieved me of all the pressure I've felf during painting. So thank you Vince.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 года назад +1

      It's so important. A figure often has to look ugly before it looks good. It's nothing to worry about, just part of the process.

    Hey Vince! Tried watching this video & looking at your StD on insta to get some insights into how to handle incorporation of tint (in my case ice yellow) to volumes, on these kinda shiny, yet not fully NMM surfaces.

    I don’t have any crimson colours at home, could you give any advice on how to mix it? I understand that purple is a mix of red and blue, but how to get crimson?
    Keep up the great work :) I already learned so much from your videos and I’m sure others feel the same.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 года назад +1

      So basically, you want a red with no orange in it, and then you bring in a dark blue, maybe a touch of true purple and you should get to a crimson. Hope that helps.

    Great videos Vince, love the content.
    You mentioned about cold shadow and cold highlight. Do you have a quick list or some kind of reference for these rules for composition? I feel very uncomfortable with composition and color theory. looking to up my game.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 года назад +1

      I have a video on colour theory in this playlist. Composition and Color theory is a really, really, really, REALLY deep subject. Check out Color and Light by Gurney, it will help you out. The simple rule I was pointing to base here are warm highlights have cold shadows and cold highlights have warm shadows.

  • @impulsenumber4
    @impulsenumber4 4 года назад

    Vince, why do you saturate colours in the shadows? I've noticed you do this with glazes over quick NMM as well. Reason I ask is I would have thought shadows to be desaturated. Best example that comes to mind is the colour theory trick of putting complementary colours in your shadow areas; just a shortcut to achieving desaturated colours there, if I recall correctly...

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 года назад

      Visual interest. Our goal isn't really to recreate reality, it's to exaggerate reality and make something visually compelling. Hue is always more interesting than black or white or brown (all non-colors effectively). So you always want to have some color. When you see canvas painters they often don't use black at all, but instead mix their own black from hues.
      So it's not about saturating the colors in the shadows, those colors are still a LONG way from saturated, but they exist, and the goal is to have a hint of color there for visual interest.

  • @zakhoskins6404

    Thank you Vince. Here's a question for what I am contemplating trying: would you approach in the same way a much larger scale subject (say a 17-25 cm robot like a gunpla /resin robot kit)?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 года назад +1

      Yes, except I would try to identify the larger volumes and make sure that there was more directional lighting (i.e. have some plates/areas more in shadow and some areas more bright).

  • @phantomchris
    @phantomchris 4 года назад

    Hey Vince, your videos have been giving me a lot to think about since coming back to the hobby. Love this scheme but im having trouble seeing where the light source for this model is as it seems backwards for the usual 'somewhere above' light sources. Also as a side question, how do you go about picking shadow schemes for models and do you make them consistent across the army/units?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 года назад +1

      If you mean why am I often lighting the bottom of the panels in this video, it's because I am going for a metallic sheen. On flat surfaces light tends to cascade and gather away from the light (basically the opposite of a normal matter surface). My honest answer is don't over think it. Light can work in lots of different ways. The key is to basically be roughly consistent across the model.
      If you want a guide, this is where something like Zenithal highlighting can really help you out. You can also just hold the mini up to a bright light and take a photo with your phone. It will give you a rough sketch to follow.
      Yes, I try to keep consistent across the army, but again, don't sweat it too much.

    • @VinceVenturella
