I remember hearing this when it first came out. The sound and energy was so different to everything else around at the time. Any new Beatles albums were always always events and moments to remember.
My mother and her brother saw the beatles live at the ed sullivan show. I asked my mother , " how did you feel when you saw the beatles on stage ? And then she said , As soon as ed sullivan anounced the beatles , they came on stage and the girls were screaming so lowd that she couldnt hear them play. she said that the screaming was so lowd that she had to cover her ears.
This looks like it could have been shot in modern times. The color, resolution and overall visual clarity is almost jarring. Having only seen The Beatles in mostly grainy film footage or old photos, it is surreal to see them look so young and contemporary. You can even make out the stubble on John and Paul's faces. It always feels like finding a treasure when I come across a video like this where the director had the foresight to shoot on quality film-stock and preserve the print.
As important as the clear video is, the outdoor garden is everything. There are no old cars, sofas, lamps, or anything that could date this to the 1960s, as long as they are reasonably well groomed and wearing black. And 77-year-old Paul still plays that same guitar, so it doesn’t look unusual...

Noone on that video was singing or playing!! It's a playback. They're even doing mistakes there. These videos are promotional and in those, the bands are never playing live even today.

Yes, I always thought it was amazing how fast things moved in the 60s. The Fabs went from Love Me Do in 62 to I Want You (She's so Heavy) in 1969. And look how much they developed between even 65 and 67. Those two years were a very long time in 60s music

Those who deny that Ringo was a brilliant rock drummer must listen to how absolutely in the pocket throughout he is here. It's just great drumming and so much more difficult to sustain over an entire song than it may seem. He did this with equal skill and talent on almost 190 Beatle's songs, and dozens of others for himself, etc. He always played to every song and greatly enhanced them. He's one of the greatest rock drummers which professional musicians and especially drummers virtually universally acknowledge.
Absolutely! Ringo played what was needed and what drove the songs. Awesome as he is, a mega-technical drummer like Bill Bruford wouldn't fit, but Ringo did, perfectly.

What really blows me away is the quality of the restoration of this film. It's in superb high definition, looks like it was just made yesterday on digital equipment, not in 1966 on a reel-to-reel film recorder. When you add to that the fact that the Beatles would still look cool today in 2021 wearing those exact same suits and glasses if they played live, with those beautiful guitars (I have a soft spot for John's Sunburst Eppiphone Casino, before he sanded it down to bare wood, and George's Gibson SG), you realize how ahead of their time they really were. In 1966 they were wearing 2021 suits!

I'm absolutely sure that this is a heavily remastered probably even remixed version. I know this song in and out, heard it on all formats since the mid 80s and it never sounded so crisp and powerful. Another great example for getting the best out of very old music are the SACD versions of the Rolling Stones albums from a few years ago. They sound like they were recorded yesterday.
The quality of the film used to record this clip is excellent. It hasn't aged at all. Normally clips from this period look old due to the poor quality of film used. This is like watching The Beatles the day after they filmed this, like we're in 1966 & they are right now how they look in this clip. Amazing. The Beatles had something that set them apart from all other bands & I don't just mean musically, I mean just the look of the four of them together. John, Paul, George & Ringo. There are many bands who go on to be legends & iconic, but The Beatles were legends & iconic while they were still together & producing a quality of music that was inspiring & inventive. They were & still are & always will be quite simply untouchable & unmatched. Amen.

I grew up with the Beatles in the 60's. They had an incredible impact in our lives. We would wait for the next album to be released and wait for hours on line at the record store to purchase it. Take them home and play them, over and over and over and over......... I still remember the excitement of slitting the plastic wrap open and ever so gently pulling out a disc of vinyl wondering what stories it would reveal. Once the newness of the songs was over we listened and tried to understand what they were trying to say. Most of the time it was a very profound message, sometimes it was just for fun. You had to see through the sarcasm which could be ever so subtle.
Same here but in England, we didn't have plastic wrapped singles or albums just the disc and the paper sleeve, LP's (albums) and EP's also had a printed cardboard sleeve. That was it, maybe you got a bag to carry it out in. Everything was changing fast then all the time and that included ourselves. Music, literature, the other arts guided our way.
I remember the smell of the paper and the album and it's cover. Pretty intense for a little 8 yr old boy pulling the plastic off and seeing that shiny black disc.
there is NO excitement for ANY CD to come out in last 20 years...not saying there isn't good music....it just is NOT the same feeling or experience we had growing up listening to whole album start to finish.....
I second that experience John. I remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan show on an old Black and White TV. I bought the Beatles Second Album when it came out. I was seven - my older brother took me to Katz Drug store at 39th and Main here in Kansas City to buy it - asking me all the way - you sure you got the money? I pulled out a baggy of pennies I had gathered from parents and grandparents and paid the $3.85 to buy it. My brother still laughs about the look on the clerk's face! I still have the record too! As you say - we didn't need to hear them in advance - you knew in your heart of hearts it was going to be GREAT music from #1 on side A to the last one on side B! God Bless them for their fantastic contribution to the modern world.
@Ronald Hinton or... they just preserved the film well and people in the mid 20th century weren't able to show the 35 mm film in full quality on television until a few decades later. when it comes to the beatles the grade of film that was used to record them, around 1965 and onwards were almost always high quality. 35mm film was already extremely good, it's just that back then people didn't know how to use it to the fullest.
This song brings back wonderful memories. If you had told me I would grow up to become a "paperback writer" back in the sixties, I would have laughed at you. If you had told me I'd be writing and recording songs, I would have laughed again. Because of the Beatles, I am now both. I bet so many out there can say the same thing.

I went to the secondary school right next to the park; in the outtake footage for Rain, I regularly sat on the tree that they are all sitting on, along with the plinth that Ringo is sitting on

Yes, I always thought it was amazing how fast things moved in the 60s. The Fabs went from Love Me Do in 62 to I Want You (She's so Heavy) in 1969. And look how much they developed between even 65 and 67. Those two years were a very long time in 60s music

Those who deny that Ringo was a brilliant rock drummer must listen to how absolutely in the pocket throughout he is here. It's just great drumming and so much more difficult to sustain over an entire song than it may seem. He did this with equal skill and talent on almost 190 Beatle's songs, and dozens of others for himself, etc. He always played to every song and greatly enhanced them. He's one of the greatest rock drummers which professional musicians and especially drummers virtually universally acknowledge.

What really blows me away is the quality of the restoration of this film. It's in superb high definition, looks like it was just made yesterday on digital equipment, not in 1966 on a reel-to-reel film recorder.
When you add to that the fact that the Beatles would still look cool today in 2021 wearing those exact same suits and glasses if they played live, with those beautiful guitars (I have a soft spot for John's Sunburst Eppiphone Casino, before he sanded it down to bare wood, and George's Gibson SG), you realize how ahead of their time they really were. In 1966 they were wearing 2021 suits!
I'm pretty sure this was shot on 35 mm film, which is why it looks so good.
If recorded on high quality film, you can upscale it to HD or now to 4K resolution. Brilliant.

GM for certain was the perfect person to produce them... he was the education and the one who could take what they were developing and create a tune... without that they are nothing... but again no writers ... nothing for Martin to glue together... because he was the one in the early days that could get them to get beyond the dev to actually then sit down for a month and do all the parts and record... that parts work and they hated that...

I'm absolutely sure that this is a heavily remastered probably even remixed version. I know this song in and out, heard it on all formats since the mid 80s and it never sounded so crisp and powerful. Another great example for getting the best out of very old music are the SACD versions of the Rolling Stones albums from a few years ago. They sound like they were recorded yesterday.

The quality of the film used to record this clip is excellent. It hasn't aged at all. Normally clips from this period look old due to the poor quality of film used. This is like watching The Beatles the day after they filmed this, like we're in 1966 & they are right now how they look in this clip. Amazing. The Beatles had something that set them apart from all other bands & I don't just mean musically, I mean just the look of the four of them together. John, Paul, George & Ringo. There are many bands who go on to be legends & iconic, but The Beatles were legends & iconic while they were still together & producing a quality of music that was inspiring & inventive. They were & still are & always will be quite simply untouchable & unmatched. Amen.

I grew up with the Beatles in the 60's. They had an incredible impact in our lives. We would wait for the next album to be released and wait for hours on line at the record store to purchase it. Take them home and play them, over and over and over and over......... I still remember the excitement of slitting the plastic wrap open and ever so gently pulling out a disc of vinyl wondering what stories it would reveal. Once the newness of the songs was over we listened and tried to understand what they were trying to say. Most of the time it was a very profound message, sometimes it was just for fun. You had to see through the sarcasm which could be ever so subtle.
Same here but in England, we didn't have plastic wrapped singles or albums just the disc and the paper sleeve, LP's (albums) and EP's also had a printed cardboard sleeve. That was it, maybe you got a bag to carry it out in. Everything was changing fast then all the time and that included ourselves. Music, literature, the other arts guided our way.
I remember the smell of the paper and the album and it's cover. Pretty intense for a little 8 yr old boy pulling the plastic off and seeing that shiny black disc.
there is NO excitement for ANY CD to come out in last 20 years...not saying there isn't good music....it just is NOT the same feeling or experience we had growing up listening to whole album start to finish.....

I second that experience John. I remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan show on an old Black and White TV. I bought the Beatles Second Album when it came out. I was seven - my older brother took me to Katz Drug store at 39th and Main here in Kansas City to buy it - asking me all the way - you sure you got the money? I pulled out a baggy of pennies I had gathered from parents and grandparents and paid the $3.85 to buy it. My brother still laughs about the look on the clerk's face! I still have the record too! As you say - we didn't need to hear them in advance - you knew in your heart of hearts it was going to be GREAT music from #1 on side A to the last one on side B! God Bless them for their fantastic contribution to the modern world.

@Ronald Hinton or... they just preserved the film well and people in the mid 20th century weren't able to show the 35 mm film in full quality on television until a few decades later. when it comes to the beatles the grade of film that was used to record them, around 1965 and onwards were almost always high quality. 35mm film was already extremely good, it's just that back then people didn't know how to use it to the fullest.
It's almost scary to see them as real people.

This song brings back wonderful memories. If you had told me I would grow up to become a "paperback writer" back in the sixties, I would have laughed at you. If you had told me I'd be writing and recording songs, I would have laughed again. Because of the Beatles, I am now both. I bet so many out there can say the same thing.

I went to the secondary school right next to the park; in the outtake footage for Rain, I regularly sat on the tree that they are all sitting on, along with the plinth that Ringo is sitting on
