In 1976 my music teacher Mr Roland played this song on the piano and turned me on to the Beach Boys. They were and always have been one of my favourite groups. Even through the punk era that I was totally involved and immersed in.
Went to see them (with Al Jardine and Brian Wilson) in Montreal a little more than a year ago. A birthday gift from my wife. I very much like them but I would'nt call myself a diehard fan. At the end of the show they were shaking hand with people down the stage, took my chance and went to shook hand with Al Jardine and next thing I knew I was in my wife's arm crying like a 60 years old little boy who just realize that their music have been part of my life for more than 50 years.
Whenever I listen to Sloop John B, I have these visions in my mind of a sailboat anchored in aqua clear water under bright sunshine...and picturing Dennis Wilson leaning up against the mast with a grin on his face, surrounded by Brian, Carl, Al, and Mike Love...one of my all-time favorite songs by an original American band, The Beach Boys.
I met Al and Jeff Fosett both very nice an humble. I had a not so nice encounter with mike and bruce asked bruce to sign my program and he laughed and said my hand hurts. I was surprised I always thought he was nice. David Marks was also very nice to people he ran into in the lobby. Ed Carter was awesome.
@@bredmon Sadly not much. Dennis walked past me as I was talking to Carl and tasseled my hair with his sweaty hand and said good show huh. Brian I got to take a picture with as past of a V.I.P. rip off package we weren't allowed to talk to him and he didn't say anything
I agree that Al is underrated, but IMO only with regards to the larger music-listening public, including many BB fans. But within the BB, I think Al's role was commensurate with his talent, and how often he was featured speaks of the group's high regard for him. He sang many BB songs, including one of their 4 number one hits, "Help Me Rhonda." In all, I think Al played a significant role, and isn't it incredible that he lived through the crazy '60s, a member of one of the most successful bands in the history of R&R, and he lived an amazingly successful life free of drugs, horror stories, and even free of all drama/lawsuits that afflicted Mike and Brian. Al did the whole RockNRoll lifestyle about as cleanly and respectfully as a man can do it. Congrats!
Before seeing the videos I didn't realize Al sang lead on as many songs as he did. I suppose it was hard not to be over-shadowed by the talented Wilsons and attention-grabbing Mike Love. Though low profile, he was/is very good as a lead singer, and as I've said elsewhere second only to Carl.
I freaking admire Wilson as a god of music and love Mike Love and alwzays give him his props, but man, i'd PAY to see the Jardines in concert!! This is thoroughly enjoyable!!
Al Jarine helped to creat one of the most beautiful musical utterances of the last 65 years. I have a hard time not breaking down in tears every time I hear the vocals come on the Beach Boys version.
Al Jardines young bloke sounds like he could of been an original Beach Boy.How cool would it be to sing with your old man who is a legend around the world for his contribution to music and being in one of the worlds most famous bands.Signature sound that takes me back to my childhood and the hot Australian summer.
I saw the Brian Wilson Band at Parx Casino last November. Al was more or less the lead singer on most songs (he did all of Mike's leads), and he still sounds like he did back in the 60s.
WOW! Matt has certainly been blessed with the same amazing voice that his dad has. I very much look forward to watching the other videos of them performing together. Absolutely loved hearing both men harmonising together!
There are lots of children of famous singers who can sing really good, such as Georgette Jones and Ronny Robbins.(imaging inheriting the voice of one of the all-time greatest singers).
Matt can't hit the HIGH falsetto notes, his dad did. (Alan can't hit the high notes he used to. Neither can I.) Alan, Brian, and Matt, all national treasures! steve
That was very entertaining and personal... thanks Al, Matt and Jeff for the show. Great job surrounding with the percussion made it bigger than it was!!!!
Absolutely magnificent from Al! I have huge respect for him, absolutely underrated for the Beach Boys. So, so glad he's still going strong after all these years. Loving the performance!
I always appreciated that Al stood with Brian after Carl and Dennis died and Mike completely alienated the band in the years following. I feel like Al has always had Brian's back.
@@fraziermichaelj Of course, I totally agree with you. Thank you, Michael for your reply. I saw Brian and Al and Al's son at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California. Brian was so fragile and Al was there supporting Brian. Beautiful and brotherly.
@@fraziermichaelj eh, yeah... but the guy has what, a dozen songs that he's written since 1963? He is very lucky to be where he is. Even his only solo album that relatively recently came out is severely lacking in solo written compositions. Him and Bruce Johnston are so lucky.
I was a super big fan of Beach Boys. I wasn't even much of a Beatles fan as I was so loyal to "My" Beach Boys as I called them. Never met 1 but saw them twice in concert. 2nd concert Brian no longer touring & was Bruce Terry (if my name recall is correct). It wasn't until some years later that I really started to appreciate how great Al Jardine & what he contributed.
Hi Al, great memories listening all the Beach Boy s greatest hits ,First album at 15 yrs old ,was the one with GTO on the cover ,alot negative things happen in my early years, l listened to the album it cheer me up . They say music is the best medicine, believe they are right.
Bless your Golden (well, also Buckeye and then Empire) State Heart, Al, for posting this. You are awesome in so many ways and absolutely a BIG part of the Beach Boys sound, both vocally and instrumentally, from the git go. Interesting and a blessing how you met and became involved with the Wilsons. You are great and haven't lost a thing at age 75 here (77 now!) Keep on doin' your thing. We all wish you the very best in every way.
I think back to Blossom Music Center concert in 1978 or 79 when I met Al and his young son Matt at the hotel we were staying. Nice meeting then and in future encounters.
I think some people can't reconcile the studio version, with an unplugged solo version of a single aged Beach Boy. Too bad. Unrealistic expectations always lead to disappointment.
In the 60's I was at the beach every day in Huntington Beach. The best way to hear the bass in Beach Boy songs in those days was to tape my small 9 volt transistor radio to the mouth of a quart Mason jar. AM radio didn't do justice to music in those days. That's why record sales were so high. It was the only way to get the real sound of a song.
Great Video; love the earlier part of the song with alternative harmony. Also good to see Al using a Takamine guitar; I have a couple of these and can testify to their great quality and good value.
I'm 68 and remember singing this in my Folk music class in the 8th grade. Saw the Beach Boys back in 64 or 65. My second concert. First was Trini Lopez. (Auditioned for the Cricket's after Buddy died)
A long time ago, my father was doing a performance, that I didn't go to. He was a decent amateur singer, and 12 string guitar player. I'm sure he played the Kingston Trio version. I was still in high school, at that time. I had the family van, and was taking 3 girls to another concert. A local band, called Papa doo run run. The roots of this song go back to the 1600's. Poet Carl Sandberg saved it for posterity as a poem in his 1927 collection called "The American Songbag". Later as Al said, the Kingston Trio and then the BB brought it back to life.
I wanted to add to the comments but after reading them theres really nothing i can add lol..I have watched and listen to the Beachboys all my life and really have enjoyed the pleasure and great feeling it gives a person afterwards..the only complaint i really have had over the years is Mike Love..his singing thru his nasal passage always killed it for me..but what can i say I still enjoy them to this day.
I like the Jamaican folksy version also. Alan has still got it. He sounds great. So pleased that Matt is still singing with them. He takes over the falsetto parts nicely! I hope he keeps the band going. Thanks for this video, it was personable and a fun one!
It seems that the Beach Boys went forward, in spite of Brian; and probably Al kept the Band afloat, ship to shore; Brian's subsequent crash landing notwithstanding.
Al Jardine ... a great real BEACH BOY
I met Al in 2015. Nicest guy you ever talked with! Humble and friendly. Such a gentleman.
In 1976 my music teacher Mr Roland played this song on the piano and turned me on to the Beach Boys. They were and always have been one of my favourite groups. Even through the punk era that I was totally involved and immersed in.
Al Jardine still has his voice! It's 2018 and almost 60 years since the Beach Boys started and this guy's voice is virtually unchanged!
That version is actually tremendous .
Went to see them (with Al Jardine and Brian Wilson) in Montreal a little more than a year ago. A birthday gift from my wife.
