Brian Wilson did lot of over-dubbing to get the choral sound. He was a maestro at layering on the board. These guys get the same effect thing with multiple voices. I prefer the Beach Boys simply because of their tone.
I'm listening to this brilliant true rendition after hearing that Brian, the last brother standing, will be placed under conservatorship a month after Melinda died suddenly. He is fading. Somehow, Sloop John B feels the right song to listen to right now. It's about longing. Brian orchestrated a timeless version of this old ballad. Here, the Fendertones pay homage to that sweet recording. They're like a modernday East Coast Beach Boys. What is best about their renditions is that they knew enough to stay true to the originals. You cannot improve on perfection, and the Fendertones know/knew it. Yet they came pretty close themselves with this excellent recording. Thank you for the exacting effort in this and all Beach Boys pieces I see here online. Right now, I'm so broke up. I want to go home.

I noticed this video this morning. I can't play any kind of an instrument and let me start singing every dog in the hood will start howling. However, it almost brings tears to my eyes remembering my weekends out in North Hollywood California in the late 1970s. I was in the Air Force then. Many of my friends loved to cover songs. Most of these friends are no longer alive. It was simply a different time! I miss those guys terribly.
At least you were there, those days I was cruising mid Canada and States, Wish in those I could have the time and gas to make it to California back in those days!
@@johnandersen6364 After I left the USAF I used my GI Bill and attended Georgia Tech. After I graduated I was offered what at the time was a fantastic job very close to that area. Of that group of people besides myself 4 others of about 25 survived to 2024. ALL 5 of us left California.
@@samshepard6235 Your comment reminded me of something else I forgot about my time in Southern California. Some friends and I made a day trip to the LA Zoo and spent some time at the Griffith Observatory. Anybody that has ever visited that area knows how large the parking lot is. That Saturday a man I identified as most likely Mexican was playing a single guitar and singing in Spanish a song that sounded and felt like a love ballad. We were standing next to our car and listening to him play. Nobody in our group could understand Spanish. Even today I can understand maybe 100 Spanish words. When I think about the 70s and my time in the USAF stationed in Southern California I most often think about all the concerts I attended, but then I also think about that guy playing his guitar. A different time and those times are most likely gone never to be repeated.
Thank you all! Hard to believe it took me 10 years to find this but I guess better late than never. This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen and/or heard in my 58+ years as a lover of music!
2:55 For Danny 1972 2008. Always navy. Gone too so soon I miss you. We laid you to rest to a version of this. Happy birthday. You were so loved. You have given the ultimate sacrifice. People think afganinstan was about lying politicians . However you were right. If stupid ideology was allowed to spread we could not enjoy this song or our many other creative musicians. Your deveststed wife but the honour was always mine
Wow makes you appreciate the genius of Brian Wilson, achieving this complex song by overdubbing. And the talent of the Fendertones who achieve the same effect without overdubbing.
In 1981-1982 , for chorus, we got a new teacher! He was young, CUTE, ambitious, and it was his first year teaching. For our first concert, we did four Beach Boys songs. The first song was In My Room. It ended up being my favorite of all the Beach Boys songs, and I became a Beach Boys FAN! In 1991, I got to see them live at Ceasers Palace in Vegas. THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY TRIP!!! About five years later, I found out Mr. Blix committed suicide. 😢 Over 40 years later, I'm still a Beach Boys FAN!!! But whenever I hear one of their songs, it's bitter sweet because I think of the wonderful teacher who turned me on to this amazing group to begin with. Dear Lord, I ask that you have mercy on the soul of Mr.Blix. ✝️🙏🏻🕊❤️🔥👨🏫💯🎵
I don't give compliments like this loosely. That was one of the best renditions of this song ( my favorite Beach Boy song) I have ever heard, You guys NAILED it perfectly.
An unfair comparison really, as this one owes its entire existence to the Beach Boys version. The arrangement is pretty much note for note a replica of the Beach Boys recording, down to the second lead vocalist doing a full blown Mike Love impression.
Depending on how many I've had, Sloop John B. makes my eyes misty, whether Beach Boys or Fendertones. The Fendertones are meticulous and impeccable in their vocal and instrumental renditions of The Beach Boys muscial legacy. I'll never know how they get such a vast number of muscians thus committed to muscial perfection with nary a hint of ego. Thank you Fendertones. Exceptionally well done!
Larry Pfeffer But in keeping with the original, each part serves the whole sound and isn’t some huge, overwhelming sound for sake of just having a wall of sound. Each instrument and voice can be appreciated in itself or can be enjoyed in the wider harmonic richness.
"Sloop John B." is a traditional. And for years, I was absolutely sure that Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys owned it. Well, but then those guys came around with: "Little moment, please hold our pints of beer." Well done! Really really well done!
I've never heard of this group but I know the drummer is John Cowsill that has been the drummer for The Beach Boys for two- plus decades and was the drummer for The Cowsills. They all sound great! Thanks for sharing this gem!
@@radamspse Of course, John is a superb musician. He's been making music since he was seven years old. Did you see the falling microphone @2:02? That's funny! All of these guys and gals are super talented. I'm so glad I finally found them. Take care & stay safe everyone...GBYA!
Hey kathykay , that was quite a gem you shared with us fans too ! And we thank you for that ! Thanx again kathykay , good listening n God bless n Happy New Year when you get to it !
@@markpuzzo3067 Oh thanks Mark. I'd never heard of the Fendertones until last year. I should get out of my cave more often. lol... I also love The Cowsills. I watched a documentary by Louise Palanker that told about their chaotic childhood and it is heartbreaking and inspiring all at the same time. For all the trauma they went through as a family they were still able to carry on as kids like everything was fine. i admire their courage. They really were towers of strength. Now, if I just knew more about the Fendertones band members! It appears that many of them are related also. I haven't had time to check them all out. I'm no fan of FB so I'm shy of details on their group. They are indeed excellent! Did you catch the microphone drop of the guy standing to the right of John Cowsill @2:01? The guy to his right got a big kick out of that. It was funny! Have a happy, healthy and a blessed 2024. Take care Mark, God bless you!
2:02--The Sinking Microphone Effect. I don''t know how historically accurate it is, in reference to the Beach Boys original,, but it's beautifully executed. Bravo! I wish more bands would employ this ground-breaking technique.
American poet author Richard Le Gallienne published a song written by folklorist Mary Elizabeth Barnicle (Never gets the credit she deserves) who wrote the words to a tune she had heard in the Bahamas He published the song Mary Elizabeth called; 'I Want To Go Home' and you would all recognize it here
This is a fantastic cover.. normally we can pick a handful of things we don't like but with this version it's put together very beautifully... brilliant lads very very beautifully sang by everyone
What makes this version great is because not even in studio with all the high tech equipment they use, and the harmony from these guy's spot on,,unique ,jcvw
These guys are truly in a league of their own. Seeing some of the Beach Boys occasionally joining in, it's a wonderful way to keep the music of America's Poster Band going strong for several more decades.
It's obvious when you listen to the version of this song by "The Kingston Trio" that Brian Wilson absolutely transformed this song into something amazing, but to actually see with your own eyes all the instruments and musicians that went into this is absolutely incredible. What a genius Brian Wilson is and what a masterpiece this song is! Well done Fendertones! ❤️
I have watch this many times and totally enjoy it, especially at 2:00 when the mic starts it's slide and the singer follows it down, that's dedication😅.
Took me back to their concert at the Intercontinental Hotel Casino in Atlantic City in 1982. Sat first row in a cabaret room and Brian was on stage. A marvelous rendition of a classic and brilliantly composed BB song. Loved it!
Beautifully done: it is all there and more but needs a good remix to re-capture the dynamics of the original Beach Boys!! Ex producer ex EMI but now, a finer ear for what makes a sound sell.
It was nice to see the drummer of the Cowsills and another member who was playing his guitar at his home in California and helping singing on Sloop John B and he also did arrangements with THE BEACH BOYS and seen him alot of their concerts! And was the music director for The Fendertones and joining them on this song and he did a fantastic job of showing them how to do the harmonies just like Brian Wilson did and Brian gave them the approval to sing their songs and as a true BEACH BOYS fan they did a fantastic job! Saw Mike Love talk about them and he didn't like it when I was watching CNN, not that many people go see the BEACH BOYS any more and it's not the same without Brian Wilson and AL JARDIN and also DAVID MARKS who joined them in the 60's before Murray Wilson fired him in 1963! It was Brian Wilson,Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love and David Marks, and AL JARDIN came along after David Marks was fired because he was a little late for practice session with the other members! But I love the new sound and they are terrific, can't wait to see them in concert like I did with the BEACH BOYS and must of seen them at the Washington Monument in Washington DC! Thank you for showing this video & truly hope you have more for us to watch and see the whole concert, every song they played brings back alot of memories and I was there when they played at Live Aid and Farm AID with Willie Nelson & Kris Kristoffersons! Once again thank you very much, and The Fendertones sounded real great and great to see the drummer of the Cowsills and another member of the BEACH BOYS.
Ive watched this video 100 times and it gets better every time. All the little things......

ALL 5 of us left California.
i was in the san fernando valley going to school in the early 1970's a great time to be alive
Excellent version of this song! Great job!
As a life long fan of the Beach Boys i must say this cover was superb. Thanks and well done.
Love it when young ones sing the great songs of my generation. Love from a Granny in NI. 👏 ❤
Wow makes you appreciate the genius of Brian Wilson, achieving this complex song by overdubbing.
And the talent of the Fendertones who achieve the same effect without overdubbing.
Probably the best rendition of this classic ever!!!
This is such a great performance, not just a great cover. These guys are a real credit to their craft.
Over 40 years later, I'm still a Beach Boys FAN!!!
+David Outman What you said! the acapella break... the instrumentation... the voices... EVERYTHING... WOW. Just wow.
+Don Lind I agree totally. This was just mind blowing.
David Outman Totally agree, Beach Boys is magical but this ain't far off
As bad as I hate to say it, better than the Beach Boys.
Couldn't say it better. ❤
Glorious wall of sound, voices in harmony with ranks of instruments -- perfect!
Larry Pfeffer
But in keeping with the original, each part serves the whole sound and isn’t some huge, overwhelming sound for sake of just having a wall of sound. Each instrument and voice can be appreciated in itself or can be enjoyed in the wider harmonic richness.
Show de vocalização!✨👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👑👍
A magnificent rendition indeed..congratulations to all!!
Brian, Carl, and Dennis would appreciate this wonderful tribute
You've done an awesome job of channeling the genius of Brian Wilson!
"Sloop John B." is a traditional. And for years, I was absolutely sure that Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys owned it. Well, but then those guys came around with: "Little moment, please hold our pints of beer."
Well done! Really really well done!
I've never heard of this group but I know the drummer is John
Cowsill that has been the drummer for The Beach Boys for two-
plus decades and was the drummer for The Cowsills. They all
sound great! Thanks for sharing this gem!
great recognition ... now that you say it yes it is
@@radamspse Of course, John is a superb musician.
He's been making music since he was seven years old.
Did you see the falling microphone @2:02? That's funny!
All of these guys and gals are super talented. I'm so glad
I finally found them. Take care & stay safe everyone...GBYA!
Hey kathykay , that was quite a gem you shared with us fans too ! And we thank you for that ! Didn't know that was John Cowsill on the drums , love the Cowsills just like we love the Beach Boys (and all 60s n 70s rock for that matter) . Thanx again kathykay , good listening n God bless n Happy New Year when you get to it !
@@markpuzzo3067 Oh thanks Mark. I'd never heard of the Fendertones
until last year. I should get out of my cave more often. lol... I also love
The Cowsills. I watched a documentary by Louise Palanker that told
about their chaotic childhood and it is heartbreaking and inspiring all
at the same time. For all the trauma they went through as a family they
were still able to carry on as kids like everything was fine. i admire their
courage. They really were towers of strength.
Now, if I just knew more about the Fendertones band members! It appears
that many of them are related also.
This is one of the best remakes of Sloop John B as a group. They harmonize well as a group.
2:02--The Sinking Microphone Effect. I don''t know how historically accurate it is, in reference to the Beach Boys original,, but it's beautifully executed. Bravo! I wish more bands would employ this ground-breaking technique.
American poet author Richard Le Gallienne published a song written by folklorist Mary Elizabeth Barnicle (Never gets the credit she deserves) who wrote the words to a tune she had heard in the Bahamas
He published the song Mary Elizabeth called; 'I Want To Go Home' and you would all recognize it here
Get chills...a tribute to the genius wonderchild Brian Wilson
Me always, love this song,i listen often,to bad the radio do not play good music. Thank you.Lili
This is a fantastic cover.. normally we can pick a handful of things we don't like but with this version it's put together very beautifully... brilliant lads very very beautifully sang by everyone
Perfection comes rarely but here it is. Even includes the "Fender click" on the bass.
Started with Kingston Trio, moved through beach boys to this 😅 the best!
Is
What makes this version great is because not even in studio with all the high tech equipment they use, and the harmony from these guy's spot on,,unique ,jcvw
These guys are truly in a league of their own. Seeing some of the Beach Boys occasionally joining in, it's a wonderful way to keep the music of America's Poster Band going strong for several more decades.
I never in my life heard a cover song so close to the real thing like this one....totally amazing
Best part of this...the folks in the band look like they're having a great time throughout the entire process.
excellent you all so much talent .perfectly heard in this fabulous song .thank you
75 stilllove the 60 +70 music
IAM 64 Love the music
Finally! A group that can do Beach Boys songs without butchering them. Nicely done!
Even the Beach Boys often butchered the songs themselves
These guys are really good. A lot of sessions to get this just right.
Sorry if a little late, but I agree. Not a Beach Boy fan at all, but I love this song and arraignment and this group gave me goosebumps.
This is a Kingston Trio tune, covered, with significant stylization, by the Beach Boys. But I like both, AND this one.
@@christophernewell4297 I will look that up! I didn't know that it was a cover of the Kingston Trio! love them as well! Off to search for it
I believe a shout-out to the mixer is due . . .
I can honestly say this is one of the best covers I’ve ever heard.
Watched this probably 30 times, and just now noticed the guys mic sliding down at 2:02 😂
Goosebumps I’m 62 brilliant well lads 👏👏👏👏
This is amazing. Edwin, we need more Fendertones content.
I still don't know which one is Edwin!
The part at 2:00 where his mic slowly falls and he goes with it cracks me up every time.
Wow! You are right, I had never noticed that before!!
@@joevaldez3651 same🤣🤣
This just never gets old. I love these guys.
Sloop John B is my favourite song of all time and this version is so good. I was hooked watching it.
Makes you realize how complex the original version was considering the limited technology of the time, what an amazing version of this song!
Excellent rendition of one of my Beach Boys favorites. These people are great.
"Yeah for John Cowsill on drums and also backup vocals."
Yup, just realized this. Didn't recognize him with short hair.
Never realized that !
John Cowsill of the 60's group The Cowsills?
Man that electric bass, double bass and bass sax sounds unbelievable together!
Yep. And that's awfully tough to pull off without it sounding muddy.
@@chuckschillingvideos agreed I've played electric and upright bass for years and this band pulled it off
Magical and superb music!!
This was the first time I heard the fendertones and I loved it . They are a total group that makes it happen . Please stay together. A fantastic job .
I initially blew this video off because it sounded so amazing that I thought they were lip-synching. Well done lads (and lady)!!
Loved it!
Had to watch this again. So laid back but sounds so professional.
These guys are great!
As A HUGE Beach Boys fan this was spectacular! Superb rendition gentlemen!
Never tire of this collaboration and seeing the moving parts and wall of sound applied to the iconic sailor's song.
That was one of the best covers of a song I've ever heard. Dare I say it: As good as the original
What do you think the "original" is? It was a folk song before the Beach Boys did it.
A Bahamian folk song first published in 1916
ALMOST as good as the original....
The Cleveland Simmons Group recorded this song in 1935!
@@warrenology almost my ass
This is truly as good as the original
