Defiantly the biking on ice one! There seems to be a new trend in Canada anyways of "Fat Bikes" which are a dream on ice and snow and we have trails dedicated to them in the winter time. Great fun!

      Global Cycling Network Hey!
Thanks for the video! Definitely something I'm working to figure out. As someone who has to commute, what is your advice for riding when it is ICY? I'm looking at purchasing a cheaper bike with greater tire clearance. Any other advice? Thanks!
      Peace

Longer braking distances with wet rims. Cleaning your drive train more often as grit & grime from the roads gets pulled up more often in the wet.

Went out on a three hour ride today in freezing conditions. Had a nice stop at a cafe with a nice wood burning stove. Tried the tip of taking a dry base layer in a plastic bag today. Also put an extra skull cap in too. Worked perfectly when I came back out into the sub-zero temperatures. Felt great to be warm and dry! Thanks for a great tip!

Matt's life hack of swapping his base layer might be the golden ticket. I've never done that mid ride but I've had some really rough return legs after the cafe stop. And not *just* because of over-indulgence. My tips are much less interesting; knowing your route and having well charged lights are the best bits of advice I can offer. If the temperature has plummeted below freezing overnight I don't ride. Even our winters can make roads tricky, with or without the prospect of hungry polar bears and eyebrow-deep snow

You are very right about ice.
I would have put it first on the list.

I learned not to take any further risks in winter when temperatures drop below zero.

Great tips, Dan and Matt, and O how we must learn them afresh every now and then. A couple of Saturday nights ago, I opted for a coffee at McDonald's right after my evening commute. Even though I was cold and wet, I figured I'd be fine, that I'd warm up. But it didn't happen that way. I was uncomfortable, cold and wet to the core, and all I could do was sit motionless and wonder why I was there. Finally I got up, rode the short distance to my apartment, and figured, well, lesson learned, again.

¨An oceanic climate (also known as ‘“marine’”, ‘“west coast’”,[citation needed] ‘“highland’’’and ‘“maritime’”) is the Köppen classification of the climate typical of west coasts in higher middle latitudes of continents, and generally features cool summers (relative to their latitude) and cool but not cold winters, with a relatively narrow annual temperature range and few extremes of temperature, with the exception for transitional areas to continental, subarctic and highland climates. Oceanic climates are defined as having a monthly mean temperature below 22 °C (72 °F) in the warmest month, and above 0 °C (32 °F) in the coldest month.

I agree with JC. Seen from Canada, these are more (very good) spring and autumn riding tips ;-) . "Real" winter riding involves studded tires, greased cables and gears, and constant freezing of locks at -30C. Loads of fun, that said but geared more for commuting than training per se. All the same, the legs are more than ready come spring time, with the added challenge riding in snow for a few months. Cheers.

The most important tip for me is to get a nice, serious warm up before going on the ride, also to better gauge how much clothing i really need. Second tip, avoid long climbs: you sweat a lot, and in the cold a long descent is going to be murder.

My biggest issue has always been cold toes going numb when the rest of me is fine. Toe warmers are great, but they can burn hot and run out quickly if your shoes have a lot of ventilation because they are activated by air exposure. Shoe covers can slow this process, but a 3+ hour ride will inevitably lead to depletion, so I cover my socks with a layer of plastic bag to insulate my toes. Works a treat! obviously keep the warmer outside of the plastic or they won't work at all due to a lack of air exposure. Keeping my shoes a bit loose also keeps the circulation up as well. I wiggle my toes around frequently while riding for the same reason. cheers!

On a note of stopping at cafés in the winter, what we usually do is stop mid ride during the summer, but stop at the end of the ride in the winter. This way you still get the social benefit of stopping at a café, but the second part of the ride is still enjoyable and not freezing cold ;)

Replace your regular water bottles with Zojirushi insulated bottles--it's what I do. Not only won't they freeze, you'll have access to hot beverages. Not as good as a cafe or brunch stop, but a hot drink is wonderful for both warming and morale when riding in cold weather, especially if you pack some homemade fruitcake to go with it.
I'd also recommend a lightweight, compressible insulating jacket w/hood (waterproof down or synthetic) to wear whenever you stop. You'll cool off very quickly if you aren't generating heat.

As far as I know the most affordable and practice for me right now with my single pair of cycling bib shorts and respective jersey is to wear non cycling tights overtop the shorts and a long sleeve base layer underneath the jersey again non cycling specific. My good friend Chad, an accomplished rider, ran his first half-marathon this past Sunday in Las Vegas. The next day, he and I rode our bikes on a 16 mile jaunt through Nevada's hilly Valley of Fire. Noting his exhaustion, I naturally challenged him to a hill climb -- my chance as the lesser rider to best him had finally come!

If you're a cycle commuter, take into account how much colder the weather will be after it gets dark. Where I live, the air gets bone dry in winter, which means the temperature at night will often drop significantly compared to daytime, especially when you add in winds. My morning outfit often needs an extra layer for the ride home.

The note on drinking in the cold is a bit off, we loose a lot more humidity by breathing on a cold day then in a warm weather. At rest, when our ventilation rate is only about 5 liters of air per minute, the amount of water we lose through our lungs is fairly insignificant - about 10.5 ml of water per hour at 0˚C and 6.5 ml of water per hour at 30˚C. Whilst small this amount can get really high when exercising and ventilation rates can be as high as 100 to 150 liters of air per minute. At a ventilation rate of 100 liters per minute, we can lose as much as 211 ml of water in an hour at 0˚C through our lungs versus 132 ml of water in an hour at 30˚C. Additionally you loose a lot more humidity through humidification of airways on dry cold days. In short drink a lot when its hot, drink a lot when its cold (even if you're not thirsty)!

Cafe stops are good when you go quite a distance over 50mls say...tho you really need to REMOVE CLOTHES - becoz ya wont feel the benefits ! upon getting back out...

Six punctures? That's a lot. Was it just bad lack or wrong tyres for the weather conditions?

Very bad luck, 5 riders, one got 3 punctures because he didn't check the tyre bed for the cause.
Another was tubeless wheels that didn't actually do what tubeless wheels do and the other two were sympathy punctures that happened straight after we set off from a previous puncture.
It was one off those rides where you think.........should i just go home now lol.
Even tried to shorten the route after the 4th puncture to get back normal time and ended up riding further than the route and climbed more. lol

Do we really have 'winters' in the UK any more? It's normally just grey, wet, windy & mainly mild. Over the last 5-6 years I can't recall many prolonged bitter/ snowy cold periods. I actually prefer cold, crisp & dry weather to wet & windy, which is sadly all to common nowadays.

I tried the tinfoil on the toes trick. Was a disaster. Took my shoes off and was like tinfoil confetti. Stuck all to my socks. Didn't keep my feet warm either.

Rapid Rattler I put foil over my shoes and under my shoe covers. Worked great.

If you use a heavy weight Tinfoil is will not come apart.. I made the mistake years ago and used a thin sheet foil and it did the same thing..

Ted Godfrey probably something like the tinfoil they use in costco to wrap your pizza if your taking it out then as that stuff is like sheet metal. Just bought some seal skin socks so giving that ago

I just wear some good shoe covers- mine are by Pearl Izumi, wind and water resistant, easy to put on and off, and have a quilted layer of insulation. Keeps my feet warm a good bit below freezing.

GCN recommends being visible but most of the jerseys worn in this video and available in the shop are either all black or mostly black. Has GCN ever considered redoing their branding to have a lot of very visible colors so that ALL of the GCN jerseys are very visible? If they did, I would buy one, but as it is, I only ride visible jerseys.

Worst winter mistake, cycling along a cycle path at night with a blinding strobe on. You can't tell distance or direction of travel from a strobe.

When we ride for transportation the don't ride when icy advice is not very relevant. The only times I don't go out are when roads have solid snow/ice everywhere apart from two tyre tracks. No where to get out of the way or be overtaken.
For real fun in the ice try a recumbent trike with a studded rear tyre.

I have no problem with cold... just rain.
Once the feet are soaked they can be horribly cold.
